Just checked mine with floydbloke's link. My car is a Nissan Bluebird Sylphy, I've been charged the "Bluebird" rate not the "Sylphy" rate, so will be giving them a call in the morning

Called them up this morning to raise an issue about the WRX banding and why it was more expensive than a budget spec Corolla with no safety features at all.
Apparently it doesn't account for how many crashes they are involved in other than the ability to get more accurate data on how a vehicle protects the occupants in a crash. So a WRX being crashed more by muppets won't specifically make it more expensive in levies just because it's crashed more often.
However, I did point out that the grouping of 93-00 Impreza models wasn't ideal given that in about 96 they started adding airbags and ABS which is a significant change to the occupant protection.
They will (supposedly) call me back next week and let me know if any changes are likely.

I called the ACC about my Skyline and I have to say, one of the most pleasant experiences calling a Government Agency I have ever had.

The bloke who answered my call (after about 20 seconds) chuckeld when I mentioned my model of car, to which I asked if he had had a few calls about it, to which he replied 'Heaps'.

He said they reckon it will be sorted before the end of July. My renewal is 31st July, so if it isn't sorted and I buy Rego at higher price, they will refund me by automatically posting a cheque.

For 12 months:

License fee : $24.50
ACC Levy : $297.91

ACC safety levy : $30.00
Other levies : $1.64
GST : $54.07

And it's not even a fast bike!

My 2001 Alfa 147 which does _not_ have a good safety rating, has been given the cheapest classification due to the low number of claims involving them, as there aren't many on the road.

Not sure that makes much sense, but I'll take the "discount".

The ACC\Government don't like motorbikes. The figures involving the justifications for this are all over the show. Be thankful it's not a >600cc machine.

It would seem reasonably fair given that any accident on a bike potentially results in serious injury - especially when ridden by some of the lunatics I see on my travels. Best of all prix du fool goes to the utter moron who overtook me on some Japanese super bike doing far in excess of 100kmh.

Whilst wearing a t-shirt, shorts and jandals....

I suppose this banding is really only a version of the 'insurance group' banding that UK car insurers have used since I have been driving.

Of course they take into account the likelihood and ease of theft, likelihood of accidents etc due to power of the vehicle and other factors. The principle is the same though.

Personally I support it as a concept, although I do not think the amounts are big enough to make much difference to people's buying habits - being pretty much a small shop at New World at one end and a big shop at New World at the other.

When they get to Band 1 being $1000 a year and Band 4 being $100 a year, it might.
