That's pretty good. My 2,200kg diesel SUV averaged 7.0l/100km on a recent 700k trip from Auckland to Whakapapa on Mt Ruapehu and back, so 500k would cost $45 in diesel and $31 in RUC $76 total. Shows how significant the RUC component is though - if they take that freebie off EV it will hit pretty hard as a cost component.

If we took the wife's petrol V6 Prado it would cost somewhere near $180! It's interesting to see the consumption skyrocket on the final climb to the Top o' the Bruce at 1600m. The trip was averaging easily under 7 until the last 20min.

It does make me wonder what a 2011 Leaf will be doing in 5 years time? Will they all be worth $1000 and have a range of 30km or end up in scrap yards? Surely with the amount of them out there and all of them having roughly the same battery degredation after 10 years there must be going to be a big opportunity for some aftermarket battery system.

I wonder if we'll see boy-racers getting hand-me-down E.V.'s from their Mum's, lowering & "chipping" them and then heading down to Quay St KFC to congregate and do burn outs. The kids from West AKL will have beat-up old Leafs and rich kids will have tired looking Tesla's with dark tints and huge wings on the back. They'll brag about the instantaneous current output of their after-market batteries.

Yeah, but you pretty much get to coast back down, (certainly to the air field) :)

- It would be fun to take an EV up the road and see what the net impact is like,

I know you can add 20-30km in range from the top of the Rimutakas to Featherston :)

Yep it's a good long coast back down at 0L/100km and I was expecting to get the average down under 7.0 on the way home but it wouldn't budge. That surprised me. That 7.0L/100km was for the round trip.

Can you set Google to use the phone handsfree audio, rather than normal (music) audio output? Audio quality is usually a bit lower, but it may turn the stereo on briefly each time an instruction comes through.

I have never search forums for any of my petrol cars over the last 25 years so I can't say that problems/issues are an ev thing.

Once my battery range becomes low, I think I'll look at using the battery as a power wall to store cheap night rate electricity or maybe look at solar.

Ideally we should be able to do this already! Apparently Nissan (and 3rd parties) are looking at ways to make your car a ‘powerwal’ when hooked up at home too... so when your charge timer says Go it charges, and when you hit peak time cost and the controller timer is set to stop it switches to output to the home.

Just need a sensible relay that responds to an EVSA instruction to flip the input, and to flip back at a preset ‘low’ level, or a timing point?

At the time Leafs imported these days loose battery capacity beyond practical - my Tesla PowerWall perhaps degrade (10 years? or less who knows). So will be looking at donor cells. That is when my High Voltage Battery Analysers will be working around the clock here in NZ checking those batteries for remaining capacity. I am not anticipating though that happening any time soon (by soon I mean in the next 3 or 5 years).

I chose to use a second phone. One for music / phone and another one for Nav. The Nav phones used it's own speaker. I always hear it. :-)

Just seen as 2012 Leaf advertised as a G2 12/12 and just under 25,000km could this be accurate for that age or should I suspect a fiddled stats asked for a leaf spy

My 2011 came through at 22K with 212 L1/2 charges and 188QC.

Two months later (and 8,000kms more) it’s lost only 1% SoH from 83%-82% so it’s quite possible for that 2012 to have a correct mileage... BUT what you want to see is the battery SoH and leafspy report, not the mileage, to decide if it’s been ‘fiddled’ or not.

Yesterday I was experimenting with keeping my battery cooler on longer trips.

I drove from Auckland to Te Kuiti (via Te Kauwhata, Hamilton and Te Awamutu) then from Te Kuiti to Opotiki (via Hamilton, Cambridge, Tauranga and Whakatane)

It was 507 km all up according to Google Maps.

I started from home in Auckland on 100%. My battery temp was (highest of 3 packs) 19C.

The excuse for the "detour" route to Te Kuiti 'on the way to' Opotiki was to take 360 VR photos of the two Hamilton chargers (Caro St and Ruakura) that I had never been to and also of the Te Kuiti charger at the New World there.

Normally, I'd do longer legs and charge as little as possible. But I've found that this results in situation where my battery is getting pretty warm after the 3rd fast charge if I have been charging from 15% to 95%.....as I often have on longer trips. It can go over 50C. It falls away quickly from those peaks, but I'd rather it wasn't so warm.

Turns out longer legs and longer charged is not the best way to do it.

If you want to drive all day, you need change to a strategy of many short fast charges. Drive for half and hour or so (40-60km) and then charge back up to 80%. The charge might only take 6-8 minutes. Barely time to get to a public toilet and back.

Why?

Because a 4, 5 or 6 or 10 minute fast charge will get you 3 or 5 or 7 kWh. and put you back on 80%. It will also have raised the temperature of your battery only a little. Maybe 5C or less. During the next leg of driving you should be able to shed some of that if you can accelerate slowly and stay under 100kph. Even better at night when it's cooler.

I was able to go over 500km yesterday and my battery stayed under 45C for all but 10 minutes near the end....when it went to 47.1C because I'd got talking to someone and slightly over charged beyond what I had intended. But it quickly fell back to 44.4C. I didn't hit 50C.

On trips like this in the past I've hit 52C and beyond....through a combination of long fast charges (big heat gain) and fast driving (heavy draw keeps the battery from losing heat) and rapid acceleration (also makes the battery warmer). Minimise those 3 and your Leaf will stay cooler longer on the road and you can drive all day long.

Also useful is spending an hour on an AC charger if you know your'e going to have a longer stop for dinner. This is especially useful for me as I have a 6.6kw internal AC charger and can gain 25% in an hour on a charger like the Delta at Bayfair in Tauranga. This lets me charge a good amount...and the battery is cooling down at the same time. I did this at Bayfair yesterday...and it had let my battery cool as I charged (for free)...and reduced the amount of time I would need to spend on the Charge.net fast charger.....so I didn't get as warm....and I didn't have to pay for the AC power gained while having dinner.
