Only running out as they cant top the tanks up fast enough via road from Marsden vs Wiri.

So the fact people on social media and the likes read 'Stations run out' instead of actually looking at WHY within the article. Has obviously set everyone off on this spiral.

Had they kept with 'no threat to other fuels', the situation probably wouldn't be what it is at present.

It's a good time to start thinking about other strategic things like our "just barely enough" privatise free market electricity system. We came close to real pain this winter with the dry South Island weather restricting electricity generation. We had to crank up Huntly which was mothballed only a few years ago. The coal mines near by were shut down and so we had to import coal from Indonesia to keep it going. We came uncomfortably close to a proper electricity shortage.

 

 

What a load of crap. Can you please give me a source of this info? Huntly has not been mothballed. Two units have been decommissioned, two are still in service. Nothing special was done for this winter from any power stations (let alone recommissioning a mothballed unit/s). In fact, I would argue the free market delivered spot on in terms of balancing security of supply and using the correct pricing signals to ensure the scarcity of water was indicated well in advance of any crisis eventuating. We never came close to a proper electricity shortage, we only just touched the 2% chance of a crisis (source). That was on the back of some of the lowest 4 months of inflows since records began. Now that spring is here things are back to normal and things are back to normal :)

 

In terms of the pipeline issue. It is certainly a major, specially on election week. Probably couldn't be much of a worse thing to happen for National.

 

To clarify Genesis slated it for mothballing and other generators saw the short-sightedness of this and stumped up cash to keep it on standby until 2021. This year, the other generating companies proved to be correct and the "free-market" was proven to be short-sighted. link  Mothballed In Genesis defence they were loosing money on the place, but the point is it is of important strategic value as a backup plan that the free market sees it as a white elephant.

Indonesian Coal If you Google this, you will find many references, it isn't a secrete. Unemployment is high in Huntly, so it is doing fellow kiwi's a disservice when we import a product we can mine locally.

It is important to remember than our electricity 'free market' system was modelled after the market system that had already failed in California, and drove up prices astronomically. The basic problem is that because it rewards the generators (with higher prices) when generation fails to meet demand, there is financial encouragement to constrict supply - as Enron was busted doing in California. In the old days when ECNZ ran things, dry winters were anticipated early, by bringing thermal generation on earlier - the new system encourages a leave-it-to-the-last-minute approach which also causes the peak price of electricity to peak even higher. The Electricity Authority has fortunately stepped in on several occasions to over-ride the "free market" and protected consumers from several instances of "undesirable trading conditions". Fortunately this EA power discourages the generators from intentionally exploiting consumers.

I'm not sure you're making your case here - Genesis signalled that they weren't making enough money from Huntly, so were going to shut it down. Other generators signalled that they saw value in keeping Huntly open, and chipped in some cash to make it so. The value was proved over the winter when Huntly was used to keep supply up without huge price spikes. There was no Government interference, no taxpayer funds splashed around. Sounds like the free market worked as advertised in this case.

I thought NZ's 98 octane fuel was sourced from Australia?

Having just watched a documentary on this, I think the reference to the 1950s is unfair. According to the documentary, electricity demand was growing by IIRC 10% per year, and at the beginning there was no infrastructure for dam-building. During and post WW2, the country was building dams as fast as it could go. It would design and build for 10 times the current usage, and by the time the dam was commissioned 10 years later, it's output would already be fully committed. And of course the distribution infrastructure was also continually under capacity.

I don't believe that private industry could have built dams (or other power generation systems) faster under those circumstances.

 

Whether NZ has power shortages is more a function of rainfall rather than the type of politics being practiced.....

 

If we had a rock-star economy, we wouldn't be so dependent on rainfall for electricity. We would have the cash to build more dams or more wind farms or solar or tidal or search for oil or natural gas or whatever to buffer ourselves against dry summers or cold winters or whatever. We would also have two refineries and two pipelines and two tank farms at the airport, and the airport would have two runways.

The reality is that NZ is short of capital, and always has been. If capitalists are allowed control the country's capital to make themselves wealthier, we always will be.

On the bright side, this will do more for Auckland's traffic woes than the Waterview tunnel. ;)
