Second this car was leased with a requirement the guy insures it. 

He didnt.  

He also asked tesla for a quote to repair. 

So they know he bodged a $16k repair on an uninsured leased car that tesla owns. 

Third - if its your own car you have the right to repair it like this. $16k for a replacement battery pack isnt that bad a price ( see Nissan quoting over $100k here...) but realistically you would either fix it or use a replacement pack from a salvaged car or something.

Fourth Rich is a clickbait drama queen and I dont trust him at all, and now he has landed this guy in some big problems

 

To play devils advocate, I don't think anyone is saying it's a common issue but it is an issue that could occur should you happen to run over something large on the road and it kicks up the wrong way. I don't think the guy is going to be in any kind of trouble from the video. No, Tesla probably isn't going to hold up any warranty claim on the pack and he'd have to pay $16k for any issues in the future...but he also probably won't have any problems in the future and it won't matter.

I also appreciate what Rich has done over the years. He has brought up some valid points in the past about the way Tesla deals with parts and they've since improved those processes. That's possibly due to some of the noise Rich made about it. However, Rich does have an agenda with this video - he has started up an EV garage chain in the US (I believe he has three shops now) and this video was a bit of an ad for that. In this case, I agree, I don't think it's fair to say that Tesla screwed this guy over, it was just an unfortunate event. Like with any car, the OEM (Tesla) has their prescribed way to fix the issue and if it's not covered by warranty or insurance then you shop around and find a garage that will fix it within your budget.

The car is leased from Tesla its not his car. the car belongs to Tesla. 

If it was his car then he can fix it however he likes though risks warranty complications if it involves his fixes.

But as it is he will have to return this car to tesla - thats going to be an  awkward and expensive moment for him.

Yeah, a Lease may give him complications in the future when he returns the car at the end of the lease. At least now he has a working car while he prepares for that in a few years. 

I wouldn't say Rich lost his shit but he certainly did become a bit disillusioned with Tesla when he ordered a used Model X directly from Tesla, they told him it was ready to be picked up multiple times only for him to show up and then be told it wasn't ready, they didn't end up having the car ready for months and then after making videos about it they took away his referral codes.

My two thoughts on this.  He broke a plastic nipple, and that means the car battery needs replacing!?

There is a real lack of protection on a component that is extremely fragile.

all i'm saying is, one day, if you tesla becomes a paperweight, get on the internet and someone has likely found ways (hopefully) to unbrick the car

The manual entry for the frunk in a model S was always a PITA....

For a Model 3 if the 12V battery dies, you can jumper it to an external one via leads behind the Towing eye, then you can electronically pop the frunk to change out/charge  the 12V battery
