I am looking to replace my 2001 Nissan Skyline (2.5L V6 Sedan).

I am after something around 2007 or newer, prefer a V6 engine, at least 2.5L. Sedan not Wagon. I have a budget of about $15k asking price (which I would hope to negotiate down a bit). I will trade my Skyline as I do not want the hassle of selling it, and as I keep my car in a parking building in Auckland, I cannot have two at once here in Auckland (I live on Waiheke, and this car will stay in Auckland).

I am looking at the Toyota Mark X (import) which seems very similar in size and shape to a Camry, but has a V6 instead of a 2.4L 4 banger. The Aurion (V6) would be good if I could find one with low enough k's at the right price.

I don't mind Nissan, but I think their newer cars are a bit ugly, but haven't really looked at them.

What do you people think?

You'd always lose money when trade in cause the dealer would need to make money on the sale . best would be do sell it for market price on trademe that way you have more cash when you go to the dealer to buy your next car.

mazda 6 or honda accord.

Those are pretty much the defactos in V6/2.5L+ mid size sedans.

Mazda 6 usually wins every review/roundup. Accord is usually second.

Personally I really like the new (2014) Mazda 6 shape - very european, but expensive.

Accords are solid but not very exciting.

I know I will not get the full value as a trade, but as mentioned, I cannot keep two cars in Auckland, and I need a car every day (so could not sell it before I got a new one). The cost of mucking around selling it to me almost outweighs the loss I will take on a trade in (plus, I don't have to get it valeted etc.).

I guess it depends on how much it is worth. But an old 2001 car, you maybe lucky to get anything on a tradein for it, or maybe 1-2k, and possbily makes it more difficult to negotiate the price down on the new car. eg. you may end up getting the same by 'selling' the car and buy a car off the dealer vs simply buying a car by itself. Dealers won't really want it, and they will flick it on quickly to make a quick profit, Whereas you may get a couple of thousand more if you sell privately, and you can say when they can pick it up so you don't have an overlap.

Maybe look at the Mazda 3 sedan.

The 6, though, doesn't come in V6 form - they're all 4 cylinders. Also, with a $15k budget, you'll be looking at the previous model 6s, which do have a 2.5 l (I think the first gen was 2.3?). With tthe current model I'd imagine you're looking at closer to 30k for the GSX (entry-level).

Agree re the looks of newer Nissans - but I'm also not a fan of the Accord V6 - the Euro may be smaller and slower, but it's certainly more attractive.

I have a '08 V6L and it's a great car

Grab a NZ new 'L' or 'N' spec and you will be happy for sure

Absolutely - was just saying I really like the current gen ones. The 2.5 GSX is $47k... not quite in the budget.

Older ones are good, but no, not a V6 as you said.

I pretty sure all the NZ spec V6's including Mugen all run same setup, they are no sports car but for a falcodore sized family car they hold their own fairly well with a good comfort/sporting compromise

You could also consider a V8 Nissan Fuga 450GT, a bit ugly but definitely a rung or two further up the  further up the Nissan food chain than a skyline or Maxima

Yeah, I've always been a fan of the 6 since the first gen, though I think the current model is by far the best-looking of the three models - indeed, I'll go as far to say it's one of the nicer looking current sedans and wagons available.

That said, Mazda knows they're priced too high, and sales have been cannibalised by the CX5, so they are far better value second-hand. I picked up my current model 6 Limited diesel for over $20k less than the new price, and it was less than a year old (this was last July); at the time, even demo models of the same car with only a few hundred kms were going for a $13k discount compared to new.

Useful information.
I like the Mazda's, and agree the new ones look really nice (but obviously out of my budget).
Had not though of Honda. Never been a big fan of them though (or Mitsi). Will certainly look at them though.

Agreed on my Trade-in. I will not get great value, and some dealers may not want to touch it. I have time to look, and to walk if they don't want to deal though. Similar cars seem to be selling on Trademe (all with more k's - mine has 128000) for $6-7000. I'd be happy with $3-4k on a trade, and will push for more (if they can flick it for $6k, I figure giving me 4.5k for it is fair). If a dealer wants my money, they will talk. I am after a Swift for the missus at the same time, so that may sway it.

I still think I'd prefer the Aurion, if I can find one. As they aren't imports, a lot of the dealers don't have them (genuine Toyota dealers do).
