Will test performance via ipref when I get a spare moment. I am not sure if this is something I can just run in a VM container or if I should get a laptop connected via Gigabit ethernet to run it instead (have not used ipref in a while). Also, I found out my testing maxed out the Disk IO of my Microserver so it may be even better than the tests above.

I did have my xclaim on a fixed channel where the e400 I've left on auto. Nice the e400 supports band steering of which the xclaim doesn't (yet).

Band steering was the major point i jumped at on the E400. Your network is hardly overkill! I too am looking at local listings of all the webassets my network is built up of.

i go as far as to having a pretty intertwined ELK build aggregating logs. - ironically this has exposed a few interesting things in Vodafones network too.

Iperf should be okay in a VM, one could the extra virtualization overhead, but thats pretty minimal. - Given im not so keen on openVZs stack though.

Well, went out for lunch got into my driveway right as the delivery notification email came through. just 5 mins behind the RD guy, with a nice tower of presents left for me~

I too must complain, i see no jellybeans!

Okay so quick few tests with replacing my normal two active APs (Fritzbox 7390 and Vigor 2904n) with two of the E400s, not even sure where to stick the third, That will be to work out later.

went for a walk up the driveway, was still streaming half way up! no line of sight, all APs were way below me in terms of elevation.

i feel like its likely im not using their positioning correctly, one is flat on a desk the other is resting against a wall, i have not mounted yet as its very much still in the play stage.

The hardest bit i found software wise (the sticker was clearly the hardest hardware) was working out which serial number was correct. Turns out my devices came pre-updated to the correct version afterall anyway. (well it did do AN update, which removed 40mhz from 2.4ghz - Yes there was a 40mhz option when i very first connected it!)

Setup is slight unintuitive but after working it all out i was able to setup one device, flash the config from the cloud to all others. do note if you import the config the hostname and static ips come with it. there is customizable values i have not worked these out yet.

Bandsteering works pretty well, I find personally, my device is pretty sticky to 2.4ghz unfortunately when it gives up on a 5ghz try it seems to let through 2.4 pretty consistantly - Suspect a timeout value applies as the bandsteering was clearly an impedance when testing up the driveway!

Roaming seems to work okay, at high data streams it doesnt roam fast enough to keep the session up. i have noticed this experience since moving to CM13 on my phone though so i wonder if it might be partly on that.

Ill convert iperf to a graph soon, wasnt that groundbreaking, my m8 gets a 1x1 433mbit sync on 5ghz so thats the limitation in my handheld testing.

ticked all the boxes! im going through and perfecting it now. i expect next day will be a lot of testing.

Configured to do it all over Distribution network rather than over the air too. If you ask me, Option of taking any roaming out of the air is positive!

Easy to setup. looks like amillion features to play with over time.

Can't see how to swap out the SSL cert yet however (self signed SHA1)

Got mine all setup too, took a wee but but that was mostly my own networks doing.

Getting about 30mbps more speed in both directions over my NF8AC, which now has the WIFI turned off. I also did a heat map with the old setup and ill try do another one tomorrow with the new one to see what the difference is.

All in all pretty happy.

Now just need to sort out the dodgy 100mbps Ethernet connect to the other end of the house

@hio77 there is an option for their version of roaming - might want to also ensure that is setup in your configuration then do another push out to the WAP's. I believe it is a simple tick however I only played with mine for around 20mins before I had to get ready for work.

Personally, I think the most impressive thing was the inspired choice for a Pokemon-based naming convention.

I use Transformers characters. So far (mostly - things have evolved over time), routers/WAPs are various leaders, notebooks are planes, desktops are trucks, and other things are usually the small figures that only have one or two moving parts. Unfortunately Android's difficulty in renaming devices _ruined_ my pretty patterns.

Home/personal equipment is named after Pokemon (has been for years - not sure why I did that) and production (servers out on the net) are named from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (Marvin, Zaphod, Trillian etc). Devices at my parents place are named after Greek Gods.

Far better than having a device like "ms-laptop" on the network - this way you can tell what is yours and what isn't ;)

Well I have had my E400's (two of them) for over two weeks now and I think it is time to give my thoughts - I previously had a Peplink AC Mini AP (for sale now if you want it for cheap - PM me with an offer).

There isn't any quickstart guide or anything to help get started, so I plugged it into my network and grabbed the IP from the DHCP server running on my EdgeRouter Lite.

After logging in a banner said I had to update ASAP to make it work with the 'cloud' features, so I clicked the link and downloaded the firmware - very simple stuff if you have touched anything computer related.

I then did a config and used the defaults for almost everything - they seem to work okay. I googled each term that I was unfamiliar with and quickly made up my decisions based on what I found out. Interface is simple and easy to use.

Setting up my cloud account and copied the config URL into the device - it was very easy to pick up the device online at this point - it is similar to how the Unifi's do it. Setting up the zero touch config seemed like too much effort to set up the second one so I exported the config from the first and modified it in a text editor - there are only a few things that need to be changed to make this work and the config file is non complicated.

The fast roaming is awesome, works very very well. I am using 802.11r, and find that keeping over-the-ds unticked works the best. One of the E400's upstairs and the is other downstairs, and my laptop and phone will jump from one to the other while walking downstairs and vice versa. I did a few basic tests like calling people on Skype and seeing if I could see a gap, running ping tests and downloading files - all seamless.

I haven't run that many performance tests, however running lan speed test got me over 300Mbits in a different room to the AP (all doors closed), and running in the same room line-of-site would get over 500Mbit's. Most rooms in the house now can download at my internet line speed of 200Mbit's. I did a few tests with my Intel 7260 wifi card in my laptop and found it to work ~ twice as good as the Peplink in speed and range (and the Peplink can do 40Mhz channels @ 2.4Ghz). I think part of this may be the larger antenna in the E400.

The units don't really have much of a downside, however the cloud side of things could do with some work as it has very limited options of what you can do. This probably isn't a downside for consumer at home use however as they really are a 'set and forget' kind of device.

You must be a God if your sticker didn't leave any residue. I had to use some chemicals to clean off the residue from mine and I was incredibly careful to remove it :)

But nice review - it is what I am seeing personally however I am in a two bedroom apartment-style house with tonnes of WiFi congestion around. Going to do more testing to see what AP I keep (This, or the Xclaim XI-3)

today i will be messing with roaming, data rates etc to get it setup correctly.

Along with ofcourse, dealing with setting up full monitoring! quick skim at what i have access to even without piping the syslog is pretty impressive. - pretty graphs yay!

I went to mount the one last night that is in the main area of the house, i eyed up a very perfectly placed beam in the middle, however SWMBO turned around and instantly just went NO NO NO. it returned to resting against a wall where the draytek it replaced used to sit.

Personally i dont think it looked bad, but then a neetly placed bit of equipment im all for. plus it has pretty lights!

As for stickers, 2/3 came off cleanly in one lump with only a slight bit of residue, the last one ripped into like 10 bits and annoyed the hell out of me. Before sticking it up it got a good cleaning.. Each one took several minutes to get started with the peaking, although once about 1/3 of the way it does pull off cleanly and quickly.
