Another chance to combine a cheap price on a brother laser printer with a cash back offer to get a very cheap printer.

Currently there is a $100 cashback offer on these two printers, and the price has dropped where you can get a 18ppm network duplix colour laser printer for $85.58 + shipping (after cashback). This is cheap even if you just want the toner.

Are the multifunction workstations (the 2 with cashbacks) any good?

Any how many toners does it need - my wife want's a workstation - can scan/copy/etc that is cheap for consumables ... I see the site shows like 8-9 "toners" for sale - it has one toner for each colour?

They are $45.89 each and there is 4 of them. Guessing the printer comes with the standard "starter" toners so half the print jobs ;-) So $180ish for 4 so you might aswell buy another printer or two ;-)

Whoops you're meaning the MFC9140CDN, MFC9340CDW. There's also 4, and you can get a pack for $436 or a $120+ per toner.... What a joke when it comes to ink. might as well buy another printer.

It is a bit like give away the printer to get them hooked on the toner, which is where they make their money. But colour is always a lot more expensive than B&W. I picked up a cheap colour laser for about $50 several years ago from a place that was closing down and was almost full of toner. Once it ran out of toner I just sold it and made my money back, as it was going to cost about $300 for all the new toner.

No the HL3150CDN and HL3170CDN printers use the same toners as the MFC9140CDN, MFC9330CDW and MFC9340CDW multifunctions.

It amazes me that the "Greenies" haven't jumped on this ridiculous situation where nearly all manufacturers of consumer/small business printers charge so much for consumables in relation to the initial printer purchase price, that there's a real incentive to send huge numbers of printers to landfill.

Most budget laser printers are cheaper than the cost of a new drum, or even a new toner in many cases. They hook buyers like drug dealers, then reel in the cash once the starter toners are empty, Others just buy a new printer because it's cheaper.

Yes, black, cyan, magenta and yellow.
You can buy standard capacity 1.4K and high yield 2.2K colour toners and 2.5K black.
There are also drums and other consumables to consider as the printer ages. As expected, dear as hell.

You can find the correct consumables for almost any printer at www.askdave.co.nz
You'll need to register, but it's well worth it IMHO.

You can get toner refills quite cheap though, and unlike many inkjet refills, the toner ones seem reliable. But the cheaper lasers tend to have less toner in the cartirdiges, so the cost per page is a lot more, than more expensive printers with big toner cartridges.

Anybody have any issues with receiving the cashback?

I've claimed many times before with the brother label makers without a problem but haven't received my $30 back from the $45 laser printer I bought last month

Submitted my claim in on 24/10 and emailed a copy of the receipt but haven't had a peep. The close off date was 14/11 to send in the supporting documentation

They have a 10 day payment policy where if the claim isn't paid out within 10 days then they will pay the original cost - cashback instead. i.e $45-$30 = $15. Would rather have the $30 I think ;-)

(I remember years ago I claimed for a label maker combined with the Warehouse Stationary "rip us off" discount voucher. 50% off one item under $50 and I bought the label maker for $49.99 less 50% = $25 and got $30 cashback)

It amazes me we see news reports about the cost of fuel and milk but never any mention of printer ink...

To top it off, I didn't realise that the volume of ink has also decreased over the years, so that now they sell 'standard' size cartridges, and XL sizes with more ink. Turns out there's often less ink in the XL size that there was in the standard size a few years back. Manufacturers claim that the printer heads are far more efficient today so you get more printed pages for the same amount of ink. Ok, so that doesn't explain why they just couldn't keep the volume at the same level and allow us to get far more printing done before the ink runs out. Unless they're concerned about 'old' ink damaging the printer heads.
Interesting article here about why ink is so expensive...
