We have power with Mercury and looking at adding broadband while they are offering half price for 12 months. We are currently with 2Degrees on a 900/500 plan with landline. We have no issues with 2Degrees, so only looking at changing due to the $700 saving over 12 months. We are not under contract.

Daughter has power, internet, and gas with Mercury. Setup was easy and she has had no issues with Mercury. The EERO router seems to have very good Wi-Fi strength all through her house.

I have a few questions for those of you with more knowledge of ISP things than me.

Q1 - Would you recommend Mercury as a reliable stable internet provider?

Q2 - Reading the Mercury website it looks like Mercury handles the whole changeover and we don't have to contact 2Degrees? Not sure about this.

Q3 - 2Degrees don't need a 30-day notice of termination as long as they are advised before the end of the current billing period? We are paid up until 19th May.

Q4 - Finally, would there be any downsides to switching to Mercury?

Thanks.

Hello!

Will skip question 1 as don't want to be bias 😄

Q2 - As long as you provide your current provider details and account number as part of the signup (and as long as there is no disconnections booked) we will transfer your existing service - It's all automated end to end (with the exception of Northpower areas).

Q3 - You should be able to select your connection date to align with your billing period ending with your current provider - we will aim to transfer it as close to that date as possible.

Q4 - Nothing to add, if you are already with Mercury, you should be able to complete the sign up via our My Account on desktop, or the Mercury app by clicking "Add Service" and select the offer.

If you are ordering an eero router, it will be shipped out around 5 days prior to your requested connection date.

As a Mercury customer who signed up on their 6 months free deal. I haven't had a bad experience network wise.

I have had to call them out on the price increase during my term over an extremely confusing legalise which they did correct with a credit and a further email down the line (looked like a marketing one, I could be corrected) that they did agree that it looked confusing and halted the price increase. Tane is a legend for helping out here and for everything else... Seriously we should catch up over coffee.

My only point is read everything... other then that, as a service it's been good. I only wish we had static v6 prefixes. Then I would stay for another year. 🤷‍♀️ When the time is up I'll be shopping. Money is the problem.

Thanks for the replies.

I will have another read of the fine print and make a decision.

Mercury will not be alone on this - I had this issue almost annually when I was with Slingshot.

Of course not.

But raising the prices, whilst it was marketed at $111 for the remainder of the 6 months when I signed up and doing the price increase before my 6 free months was up was bad.

That's what I took issue with and apparently many others did agree, as I received a marketing email not so long after it was resolved that they would not be touching the price until end of term.

hey! We just did the exact same thing. Has gone so smooth I couldn’t believe it.

We use Chorus fibre and have a UniFi setup - if I didn’t get the alert about the connection going down in the early hours for about 20 seconds, I’d not have known the changeover happened. Totally seamless.

Q1 - Would you recommend Mercury as a reliable stable internet provider?

Still early days for us, but so far we haven’t noticed anything different at all. Speeds are as fast as before, reliable connection and no weirdness that we’ve come across.

Q2 - Reading the Mercury website it looks like Mercury handles the whole changeover and we don't have to contact 2Degrees? Not sure about this.

Thats right, I contacted 2degrees to confirm what happens when I leave but gave no notice at that time. If I didn’t ask them that, it’d have been zero contact with the LSP

Q3 - 2Degrees don't need a 30-day notice of termination as long as they are advised before the end of the current billing period? We are paid up until 19th May.

That’s right, in fact it was easier. I wish all carriers were like this. Because with 2D you pay 1month in advance, when you leave you’ve only used a part month of what you’ve paid, unless you time it for the last day of your month. We were right bang in the middle of a billing cycle.

when I got my next bill from 2degrees I was in credit as they pro rated the month and refunded me the remaining months costs. I messaged them on Facebook and asked for them to refund it to the same account the direct debit comes from. Replied within an hour and it’s all sorted. So easy! Total polar opposite of scummy OneNZ who’s store told me it’d work the same way, only for billing to charge me a full 30 days notice period when I ported my mobile out - ended up being a complaint to resolve that.

Q4 - Finally, would there be any downsides to switching to Mercury?

So far none that I can find. The pricing might not always be the sharpest for energy but it works well for us. We wouldn’t save a huge amount by moving providers - and we get at least a week of free power each year with all the random days they give plus the long standing account bonuses etc. Their rewards app gets us a bit of credit now and then too for doing not very much

Thanks for reply regarding your successful ISP switch over. Looks like they have made it as easy as changing power supplier.

Mercury has the cheapest power for us that I can find. 2Degrees have rung me a couple of times trying to get us to use them for power, but their rates are miles higher than Mercury.

We have been with mercury for both for a few years. I can't remember the last time we had an internet outage. Their broadband has been more reliable than the business 2talk plan we have at work.

I've also switched to Mercury earlier this month for their half price broadband for 12 months deal, no issues so far and switch over was seamless since switching from DHCP with vlan10 to the same, took i think a day or two from sign up to switch over actually happening.

If you want to save money and aren't into uploading beefy sized files you could switch to their 500/100mbit plan. If you want to constantly max out a 900mbit connection you probably should connect via ethernet if possible.

My 5c you can keep using your 2degrees router to on mercury as both use IPoE / VLAN10

The only exception to this is if you were a former Myreplublic customer where the connection was IPoE no VLAN tagged

Bear in mind that both 2degrees and Mercury use CG-NAT so if you require inbound access you need a static ip (which you may have had with 2Degrees) so I think (someone correct me if I am wrong) Mercury do free public dynamic IP if requested.

Can confirm we do free dynamic public IP on request - Static IP is a one off $50 charge.

We have Tapo cameras and daughter on Mercury also has one.  They are all linked to a common account that we can view through the Tapo app on our phones. We don't use the Tapo cloud subscription and the cameras save their video to an SD card in the camera.

We didn't ask for anything special when she signed up, so assume she is on CG-NAT if that is the default?

I just checked and see that we are on CG-NAT.

What would be the advantage of a dynamic public IP address?

Cheers.

You won't need to worry.

Your cameras will work with CG-NAT. Almost everything else will work with CG-NAT. Don't overthink it :)
