Not sure I want Lawson going into that Torro Rosso. It looks painfully rubbish.

I think he's unlikely to get the seat before the summer break anyway so you'd hope the RB will have moved along the development path a bit by then.  He's not a chance of a top five team drive at this point and the bottom five teams all seem to be much of a muchness anyway.  If he could match or beat Tsunoda for performance as he did during his opportunity last year then I believe he will be showing enough to ensure a decent stay in F1.

Superb drive by Carlos. Surely someone like Mercedes will be knocking on his door. Though I'm not sure he should go there...they seem to be in a bit of reverse last few years.

Agreed.  The rumour is he is apparently chasing the Red Bull seat for next season.  It's far and away the best choice out of the only three options worth considering for Sainz -- Red Bull, Aston Martin and Mercedes.  It probably depends on what Alsonso decides and how soon he decides it.  They're probably the only two drivers who look attractive to multiple teams at the moment.

Not sure Red Bull would like to sign Alonso, so his options are either stay put or move to Merc.  If Fred does stay put then the only decent option for Sainz is RBR.  Assuming they don't extend Checo which seems to be a race to race proposition at the moment.  He acquitted himself well in the first two race weekends, then royally screwed himself with the grid drop and an inability to get up to the front when Max retired.  Can't imagine Horner/Marko/etc would have been happy about that, and the drums start beating again.

RBR would be a good move, Sainz is a team player. Reduces the options for Lawson a little though, but that's probably more offset by Danny Ricc doing a McLaren type season again, this time with RB

snj:

Post race interview Max said that the brake stuck on at the start, hence progressively getting hotter and then the fire.

I'm sure there's more to this as he got off the line pretty quick...imagine the pace if he got that start with a wheel with brakes locked.

snj:

Just to note, Alonso just got a post-race penalty (drive through converted to 20sec penalty). Stewards decision & updated classification (Stroll and Yuki up a place, Alonso down to 8th). Stewards decision actually pretty well reasoned, and seems to be along the same lines as what the telemetry breakdowns people were posting immediately after the race seemed to show.

It did seem unnecessary for Alonso to pull such stunt...but same can be said of Russell's manoeuvre... Racing is one thing, but to unnecessary endanger another driver isn't good for the sport...

Ive just started watching FP1, it hasn't started yet, but im super keen that Ferrari go well. While I have been an RBR fan since the Webber days, It would be great to see RBR and Ferrari go toe to toe.

Oscar is great, give him another year

Charles is great apart from his frequent offs

  1. Max
  2. Carlos
  3. Lando

Charles is feeling a bit like George.
George crumbles under pressure more but Charles has a bit of that and Ferrari strategists to deal with too.

There's a lot to like about those picks, spreading the performance around the three most likely teams at this point in the season.  However, I'm thinking (famous last words) that Checo will get his act together after a poor weekend by RBR standards last time out.  It is the home of Honda, so I'm going as follows:-

1/. Max
2/. Checo
3/. Carlos

Well done.

Checo is so annoying, average at best, often, them he turns up. Max had a yellow final sector so the gap is probably 2.5 tenths, which is more than acceptable if Checo can do that every race

Arguably Danny Ricc is now ranked last in the Red Bull stables. Yuki has him, Liam had Yuki. Unfortunately Danny Ricc is having another McLaren season.

Mercedes looked right there, then weren't.

My race picks

Max      too good lap after lap

Checo   in form here, in his seasons quest for his job

Lando   McLaren look very very good

Piastri   McLaren look very very good

Yuki has him beside him on the starting grid. I'm happy to wait 53 laps to see how they finish.

Yuki v Riccardo might be the most interesting part of the GP!

McLaren looking real good for Sunday. Norris needs a clean race and a bit of luck. Could be in with a shot.

Oh dear Daniel. Oh dear oh dear. Probably a bit too opportunistic by Albon but if you dont go for a gap thats there you'll never go for a gap.

Should have had a little flutter with the TAB.

The Red Bulls still dominant. Carlos continues to put himself squarely in the shop window.  I do wonder if he's already done a deal with Marko/Horner for next year.  The longer it goes with Sainz saying nothing about a deal, the more I suspect he has signed with Red Bull.  RBR are going to keep it quiet as long as possible to keep Checo in line for the Constructors.

Great result for Yuki, bad luck for Daniel but when it's not going your way these types of things crop up.  Another racing mistake from Sargeant in a bad weekend for Williams, he has to be dead man walking surely.  His only saving grace will be if Mercedes miss out on both Carlos and Alonso.  I think they will put Antonelli into the Silver Arrows in that scenario.  However, if they get one of those drivers to replace Lewis, then Antonelli to take Sargeant's seat sooner than later.
