Benoire:

I would suggest that this is far more dominant than Lewis was as Max's team mate is no where to be found!  While Mercedes where rampant during the early stages of the V6 hybrids and I therefore hold no issue with RB doin the same

I see them as totally different. Mercedes in 2014 were two seconds per lap faster, thats more than massive. So called 50hp more.  RBR isn't. I put that down to a new design car that nailed some things and the rest is still 9/10. Other cars havent nailed anything, they have weaknesses to fix, but they are doing that. I hate reg changes, as when any new rule changes happen you will always have one that nailed it better, one or two that arent too bad, others, work to do. Then they close up, then new rule changes

Brundle stated that horsepower now is very even, so if that's the case, the chasing teams can keep improving

Bad news, De Vries dropped and Danny Ricc at Alpha Tauri for Hungary onwards. Liam Lawson passed over

But, according to the Herald article I skimmed, it may be that Lawson is being kept to replace Perez 2024. Makes sense, a young main team, and Danny Ricc can grab the points that De Vries cannot earn

I.e. Danny Ricc isn't a key part of the Red Bull family going forward

The 2023 Alpha Tauri is such a dog (remember the roasting team boss Franz Tost gave the engineers when the car was launched?) that Liam would almost be hoping not to be offered the seat this year!

Autosport seems to be suggesting Ricciardo wouldn't agree to being "on loan" to AT without having something in the pipeline for Perez seat in 2024.  Will probably come down to who is faster in the AT for the rest of the year - Ricciardo or Tsunoda?

Agree with this. The best thing for Lawson is to finish Super Formula as the 2023 Champion and wait on a 2024 seat somewhere in the wider RB family once all the dust has settled and deckchairs are moved.

This is make or break for Ricciardo, Perez and Tsunoda now.  Is the AT really the mobile brick we all believe it to be?  If the Aussie finds speed that de Vries and Tsunoda haven't been able to extract, then he looks golden again and Perez is in trouble for next year.  He circulates at the back of the grid and gets shown up by Tsunoda, it's McLaren all over again and Dan's career is all but done.

Lawson is in the smart seat and watches the RB grinder do its thing and potentially comes into the AT in 2024 when their car is more closely aligned in terms of parts and development with the RBR one.

FP all over the place, unsure what to make of the first of two trials for FP tyres

But the top 4 will be fun. Mercedes seems good on the tight track, RBR less so, McLaren are well and truly back.

My picks are

  1. Max, as RBR is better in race race, great on tyres
  2. Lando as McLaren is a real force now. They dont like hot days, but its a new and improved car
  3. Oscar as he is ver close to Lando
  4. Lewis. Sometimes Mercedes look great now, then they dont. But as Max and Lando didnt have a great Q3, I'll slip Lewis to 4th

Based on these 4 finishing with no major issues. Strategy will be a reasonably strong factor

Very (pleasantly) surprised at McLaren! Did not think Budapest would suit.

The Red Bull upgrades look ugly. Did anyone else watch Sam's tech analysis of the RB upgrades? The new radiator inlet has been grafted on to an old part and the carbon butchery/repair left exposed. I know it shouldn't matter how cars look (especially if they're winning) but I would be all for a rule that requires cars to be painted (or no more than 10% exposed carbon fibre). If you want it to be black, fine, but paint it black. Let the teams then work on any weight issues rather than just stripping back paint.

Even aside from that, the high inlet and "twist" by the Oracle O did make it look a bit like an abused coke can.

I'm sure RB fans won't care if Max is lapping the field though!

Should be an interesting race tonight, Verstappen looked a little out of sorts but it's hard to bet against him getting it done when it comes to the big show.  Think it will be a battle with him and Hamilton for the top step with the latter having the belief after quali.  I don't think the Merc will have a better chance this year so they better make the most of it.

Danny Ricc went alright but there was literally nothing in it between him and Tsunoda.  Will be interesting to see how they both respond in the coming races.

Highlight so far has been Jolyon Palmer's "Driver Warning" button, long overdue!

Yes, my podium prediction is Max, Lewis and Lando as of right now.  The McLaren is really looking the business now and good to see Norris responding to the stiff challenge from Piastri so far this weekend.

I do think the top step is a battle between the RB and the Merc though.  Lewis has got the bit between the teeth now after his P1 in quali and it's going to be a decent effort for Max to get past him and then keep him behind.  I think it'll come down to the wider team effort, good strategy, slick pitstops, how any SC's might pan out for the top three.

Looking forward to the race tonight and my favourite race of the season, Spa, next week.  The season has got interesting again after it looked like a procession for RBR a few weeks ago.

How I see Quali

Lewis stated he got everything out of his lap. He is great on this track so unsurprisingly he nailed it

Max hasn't got the setup to his liking, not pointy enough. 1st sector was yellow. But his race runs were good, so Id expect him to be good, look after his tyres better than most

Lando made mistakes in his last quali lap, but was less than 1/10 off pole, so arguably he was a great chance to get pole.

I expect Max and McLaren race pace to be good. Unsure about Mercedes, if they can convert quali pace into race pace. Passing will be an issue. If all got away the same, Max may just wait for the DRS, Lewis may run hard to break the DRS. McLaren will be right there, in fact if the top 4 order switched to any order of them, same probably applies. Hard to devise a strategy, as a SC screws that up. The new safety mantra means a VSC is much less likely so that is very much the cat amongst the pigeons. I just hope its not a turn 1 disaster that removes the top 4 clash,or SC's turn the result into a lottery. If its relatively clean for these top 4, whoever wins, they will deserve it.

Sergio, enjoy the last few races at RBR/F1

Ferrari. I have no clue

I think for the race McLaren are in a really strong position having 2 cars in the top 4. If those 4 pull away a bit but find it hard to overtake with none of them really disappearing up the road then McLaren will look for an undercut (or overcut). Assuming no positional changes they'll probably pit Piastri for an undercut. RBR and Mercedes likely need to react leaving Norris and McLaren to pick their move.

Personally hoping Norris gets his first win.

Considering where McLaren were at the start of the season (even just half a dozen races ago) it seems unbelievable they're fighting for podiums now!

Yep, I really rate McLaren. Their hoodoo was tyre temps/wear in hot conditions, but if they have improved the car, then that should improve tyre temps/wear due to efficiency. They can win, as RBR wont be at their best at Hungary. Arguably Max should have got pole if he improved slightly his last run. Lando could have got pole or a close 2nd, Lewis a close third, Oscar right there. Add in George, and you have a turn 1 to chequered flag fight

Also DR just has to survive a race and he’s cheaper than Nick Debris

What about the hASS though too, man that guy’s consistently quick over a single lap.

And those Alfas?!!
