afe66: Those halo safety rings have proved their worth.... After moaning drivers saying they impaired their view.

Without them Gasney would have died in that crash last year either from directly blow or unconscious and unable to exit the fire.

And Hamilton might have died from Max rear right wheel comming down on him.

That race was way way better than I thought. Bottas was the driver of the day for me. Last to 4th !

Also, Grosjean would have died on impact in Bahrain GP 2020 or be so incapacitated he would have roasted alive.

What I'm wondering is if Red Bull decide to replace Verstappen’s engine for Sochi (as Mercedes did for Bottas at Monza) and take a 20-place grid penalty for that, does that make the 3-place penalty ineffective or would the 3-place penalty carry over to the next race after Sochi?

There was discussion all weekend that both Verstappen & Hamilton would need to take a new engine (and the 20 grid place penalties) sometime and if it just soaks up a racing penalty for Verstappen, that'd be the ideal time to do it from Red Bull's point of view.

I suspect the rules don't contemplate such a cunning act, so Red Bull could do it.
It would also really wind up Mercedes - probably a bonus from RB's point of view

Should be all the same race.

A few years ago merc took a new engine and gearbox for each session and ended up with 3 new sets by quali and like a 100 grid penalty in that race and f1 outlawed the mickey mouse antic after that race.

Batman: Lol that would be the worst strategy.

Think about it.

Sprint race 3 points, main race 26 points.

Pay attention.

Bottas in a full complete engine takes pole, taking Sprint Race points off Max. Bottas isn't racing for any title, he's racing for Lewis's title

Mercedes did that. Lets had a big penalty for whatever reason so they changed everything, got another big penalty, but if you start last, you cant go back any further. So a free engine change for the rest of the season. Unsure if that loophole still applies.

Penalty was interesting, it apparently took hours.

Martin Brundle the huge Lewis fan said that Max didn't do anything wrong. And that while Lewis squeezed him a little, he would know that Max will be on the sausage kerbs and bounce around. Stewards say both had fault but Max had more essentially. 3 place grid drop at a Mercedes track is a tame penalty, so it wasn't much more then a racing incident, just a tad more with a tad penalty.

I don't often watch all the post race interviews but the discussion around that incident was very interesting. Naughty sausage kerb.

So Max won't be able to take the engine penalty & grid drop at the same race? That is fair enough though, as mentioned above it stops teams taking the mickey with it.

yes he can if he chooses to.

the loophole that was closed was taking a new engine at each practice session and stockpiling 3 engines and taking penalties for all 3 engines in 1 race starting from the back.

I thought Button was the one who took a penalty that was more than the number of cars on the grid at one point - once he was at the back they just replaced everything and it worked out to something like 32 places.

they all did, but for other car parts. they had i think 6 different car parts that you could take penalties if you exceeded a certain limit per each of the six parts.

but hamilton was the first and last to take 3 engines in one race, according to Toto, just to prove the point that it was a stupid loophole.

Well a Russian Grand Prix that was entertaining. Absolute heart break for Norris, and Verstappen somehow got up to second place. It's hopefully going to go down to the wire for the championship.

I should probably check where Hamilton is on engine parts at the moment.

Yep, Norris/McLaren made the wrong call, Lewis listened to Mercedes the second time around to come in for inters, Max got the rub of the 'green' by being able to pit at the right time which got him ahead of the others... had the race not finished under wet conditions he may not have got further ahead than seventh... Bottas is a wet weekend and didn't do well until he pitted earlier than the surrounding drivers for intermediates so was lucky to get 5th... Alonso lap 1 was interesting and clearly practiced...

Lewis has all his engines/parts in play and will require a penalty I believe to change anything now so expect something later on as the other units degrade or he needs an engine for a few power sensitive circuits..

Mixed feelings on teh Norris situation, as he was close to rude on the radio saying shut up to his engineer.

McLaren should have made the call knowing the rain was coming, they have the rain radar not the driver.

One to learn from.

Ver did excellent to minimise the impact of his penalty change.
