Dochart: I’m glad they selected Phillips today, his bowling has been lethal so far in ODI cricket at the CWC

Phillips was just waiiting to happen, I was calling his bowling as second best spinner in NZ behind Sodhi, I think he has the x factor. His wrongin just seems to be on a string when he rattles the poles.

Flappn Nicholls. again, Kane sticking with old players, I think Ravindra earnt a shot and Nicholls is our weak link.

Its an ok team, but Id swap Wagner in for Southee and Rachin in for Nickallballs.

i think you forgot that Southee is the captain, he was playing no matter what.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Nicholls was always going to play once he scored that carreer-saving double ton last time out. Watch him now be mediocre for another ten test matches before they finally drop him in true Kiwi fashion. Totally agree that Ravindra deserves a go after his heroics in India.

I would have picked Wagner over Southee as well, but the same problem exists as with Nicholls. Southee, with all due respect to him, is past his use-by now. He's been a fantastic servant over the years, absolutely one of our best alongside Boult by any measure. But, now is the time to change the guard and get the next generation in there. He's our Jimmy Anderson, capable of the occasional piece of brilliance on a helpful pitch, but by and large a spent force.

Exacly. Wagner is what is needed for the bodyline tactc, over after over, getting through ten to twenty overs quickly while the spinners do the same, get two more and it could be a collapse.

This is they key, hes a good swing bowler in NZ conditions, hence his very different avgs home vs away, which is normal for most players but he clearly is not going to do much without the swing. Taking Wags on SEa tours and not using him is our biggest mis use.

Good to see KJ getting use to the wicket and joining in on the wickets.

But Glenn Phillips is just proving how very good he got with his wrist spin between dropping the gloves for auck and now, quite an extrodinary talent. Now he just needs to start putting on middle order level runs and fix the same problem Michael Clarke had to for aus which is hit it along the deck, not in the air. Obviously things change in white ball. I hope they give him the ball to give him a chance for a test 5fa.

News: NZ to play a 4 test series vs aus, with the Boxing day test added to the schedule. Whoah, hope Henry and Co are ready to go by then.

Devon Conway is having a shocker for form. Latham missing out on a real belter of a pitch. Nicholls better deliver.

I think Rachin could play opener. I feel like Conway needs to fill the Taylor role at 4. Of course that wont work with Mitchell at 4. Conundrum. Id have tought wit Mitchell yet to bat, Rachin at 4 is the perfect time to test Rachin out or use him to open and move Conway to that very key #4 position....

Southee averages 29.02 with a strikerate of 58.4 overall. He averages 26.89 with a strikerate of 60 in Asia.

Wagner averages 27.50 with a strikerate of 52.6 overall. He averages 31.56 with a strikerate of 73 in Asia.

Southee is by every measure a better bowler in Asia than Wagner. Wagner is a much worse bowler outside New Zealand other than in Africa which is inflated by 2 out of 5 tests being in Zimbabwe.

Wagner doesnt have the amount of tests to compare. But the point is, if you playing only two pace bowlers, you need a Wagner, because of attrition. Plus just leaving that onside field eventually takes a wicket, low run rate etc. This is the kind of wicket he is suited too. We fit more overs in keeping the strike bowler fresher. Which should be either Southee or KJ and for me KJ is far more dangerous than southee. What im saying is its not Wagners stats, its the long game and the role he plays.

Nicholls proving Rachin should be in the side, isnt Nicholls SEa away avg something like avg 25?

Mitchell HaS too perform thanks to Nicholls and likely so does GP, no pressure second test......

This is turning, day 3 is going to be dam hard, day 4-5 is just going to be guessing games, better being offensive and getting to the pitch of the ball.

So much for this being a belter of a scoring pitch lol. Some how NZ need to get close to 300 and then totally roll Bang to give any chance on day 4. Its cracking up so much the ball could do anything.

Oh dare, WK wanted to review, nobody was into it, but Mitchell nicked a feather of leather. OUCH. Now some of them have been advised and are not happy lol

Mitchell does what I suggested dances to the pitch of the ball and smashes an on drive for 6. Need to keep doing it to put spinners off their length.

Williamson hits two fours, he knows what will be needed, the second four was an impossible cut that he just makes look effortless.

Mitchell 63avg vs spin, but this pitch is not the norm nor what anybody expected, but hes sweeping and getting to the pitch. Williamson afg 74 vs spin. But this is not spin in NZ, this is nasty. I reckon regardless they have to attack as sooner or later noodling the guessing game will end up one hitting a crack with your name on it. So Im happy to watch them playing the risk game.

Cirkey, Mitchell goes reverse sweep for 4, then noodles the bat out to the ball and it land 3 inches from mid on fielder. Gotta attack everything other than full.

Oh Dear, Mitchell doing what he should, dancing to the pitch of the ball but instead of see ball hit ball, he noodles at it and hes stumped.

NZ were looking settled, like they could put on 350 with that partnership.

First time Mitchell stumped, I guess everybody makes a mistake.

WOW Williamson dropped with an absolute sitter. NZ could be in deep trouble the way the ball is turning and NZ playing silly shots.

Blundell frustrates me as much as Nicholls. Idiot shot.

GP, no pressure, just have to save the innings.

If Rachin was in the team and we had taken a better batsman keeper when blundell had finished as make shift opener. We would have a very strong batting team again.

Edit: GP belting it around the park is getting us close. another 30 or so and I feel safe we will pass their score. But still need to bowl them out sub 200 next innings.

GP and Ravindra should be in team together. GP is a better bowler but Ravindra is potentially a better top order batsman. I think we are missing a trick, especially on such a turning pitch. It wiil be turning sideways by day 4.

Southee n KJ are technically better than tail enders, Southee specifically has always irritated me with no application of his potential. Both are making some of the wolrds best in our top order look very ordinary.

If NZ spinners bowl like Bang were yesterday we should roll them for sub 150. Should and will do, being very different things. But they had it turning sideways yesterday. NZ now has 3 decent turners of the ball in the team, Rachin would only add to that. Could add another batsman and drop one of the Pace bowlers and play the 4 spinners, wouldnt that be something from a NZ team haha.

I think Phillips and Sodhi will clean up, with Patel joining in on things.

edit: Good job from KJ and Southee, but lol. their best spinners couldnt get them, Monumul is our bogee, he comes on and bang bang cleans up our last two wickets. Stat I just heard, of his ten wickets, seven of them are vs NZ. 3 wickets for him this innings.

Ok NZ have to take wickets early this time around or we wont stand a chance as this pitch is just going to turn to spin heaven, if it isnt already. Only positive was to see runs from 7-10 and Williamsons century, probably one of if not his toughest with the spin.

edit: ugggh KJ unlucky, forcing some really poor shots, turning into fours or falling short of the catchers. grrrr. His height already fooling an issue.
