Loved the result of the qualifying! I'm not a huge Verstappen fan so I was low key pleased Danny Ric stole pole from outta nowhere. That was probably Verstappen's last chance to get the record for youngest pole sitter as I can't see Red Bull touching Merc/Ferrari in Brazil or Abu Dhabi.

The start of the race will be interesting. Both Hamilton and Vettel will get a nice tow down into turn 1 and with their superior straight line speed to the Red Bulls I could see them both getting and overtake opportunity.

Wow that's pretty steep. I'm currently living in the middle east and we've got BeinSports here. I pay $180 a year for the online subscription which gives me access to 17 sports channels. It includes F1, MotoGP, the top 5 European football leagues, Champions/Europa League, Tennis (incl grand slams), Golf (incl majors), NBA, MLB, NFL, Olympics (when they're on), IPL cricket, 6 nations rugby. Plus a bunch of other stuff I don't really pay attention to.

I still can't believe there isn't something like this available in NZ. Of course it's generally stopped because Sky has the rights and is a monopoly but considering the amount of stuff they've lost over the last 5 years you would've thought there'd be someone happily snapping up those rights and just creating their own sports monopoly (ala Bein).

A) Sky is not a monopoly and never has been

B) I can think of 20 cities I have been to that have double NZ's population

C) Being small and remote has its benefits, who cares if we pay a few more dollars

The tow is an issue, but while Mercedes and Ferrari closed the gap in quali, no one can run party mode for more than a brief period. IMHO, RBR is way ahead on this track due to a superior chassis. Quali is the worst case scenario.

Race wise, Hamilton needs to finish 7th. He may take it easy, take an extra pitstop for a latte, stay out of trouble. Vettel has to win, so gloves off. Max wants to win. so gloves off. Danny Ricc has no need to play the team game, so gloves off. Whenever I see a race like this, invariably it gets ruined on turn one, so fingers crossed.

Thoughts on the Verstappen/Occon clash this morning?

I'm inclined to disagree with the stewards on their call. (though I concede that they are better placed to judge than I am)

The main reason I'm tending to view in Ocon's favour is essentially because of Max's mis-reading of the incident even well after the race.

It wasn't that Max was catching Ocon and attempting to lap him - in which case, Ocon should have gotten well out of the way of the leader. Instead it was Ocon (on fresher tyres) who had caught Verstappen and was attempting to unlap himself. (on instruction from his team) Ocon appeared to be ahead into turn 1 and gave racing room on the apex. He was alongside at T2 but was denied racing room by Verstappen.

Max had noting to lose by letting the Force India past, but decided to shut the door, ultimately causing the contact IMHO.

I get the sense that, in his head, Verstappen believed that Ocon had no right to be contesting the corner, and simply drove as if he wasn't there.

Wow that is very unfortunate. I actually thought Ocon was being lapped. If he was being lapped then he should be banned from F1! If he was trying to unlap then it's a racing incident. But Ocon is not the safest F1 driver out there you have to say! You see Ocon you better drive the other way otherwise he will hit you!

While I agree that Ocon was in the wrong and the 10sec penalty was justified I really don't understand what Max was playing at. Why would he even bother defending against a guy who is unlapping himself? Just let him go and enjoy yourself while you drive to victory (while probably re-lapping him a few laps later). Yet another rather immature decision from Max (which probably sums up his season).

On another note, the Red Bulls were immense today. Assuming Honda finally sort out their reliability for next season I could see Max in contention for WDC with that added power boost. Vettel I think is done. Maybe having Leclerc along side him next year will give him a bit of motivation to improve himself, but his race today was straight disappointing.

I don't think Max was "defending".

It looks like Max didn't expect Ocon to attack him.

If you watch the incident, Max was doing his thing, and then suddenly Ocon was alongside him.

I think this should be a learning experience. If you watch Lewis, anytime there is a backmarker anywhere near him, he drives wayyy over on the otherside of the road. He knows something Max didn't.

Agree 100%. Brundle said Ocon lunged. I rewound T2 over and over, he came round the outside, Max was ahead slightly, maybe a metre or a bit less, both had same speed, Ocon closed a bit, it wasnt a lunge. Max ran the turn as if there was no car beside him. Hamilton told him, "you have more to lose". Exactly. Its a 71 lap race not a Turn 2 race. Ocon was faster, he is allowed to unlap, Max should have not raced him as they dont race Force India. Force India was racing its own opponents and passing was very important. Max had he let him room could have enjoyed a bit of a tow for a while, to help his own race.

Max must have known he was there and his T1 action was to out Ocon in his place.

Ocon wasnt suddenly there, there was no lunge, he was beside him, a metre or less behind, but he didnt back off as Max wanted.

Notably, an excellent race, the big boys racing together, no huge hopes for a race, dashed on lap1. Top 5 finished top 6, seconds between them all.

As Brundle said pre race, once the titles are done, the gloves come off and we get great races. Conclusion, ban the titles!

It was the only pay tv player in this market for a very long time. Whilst it was not a monopoly in the complete sense of the world, it was a virtual one once TVNZ and TV3 were unable to compete for sporting rights.

If you wanted any sports access in NZ, sky tv was your only option for many years.

Big change now is a viable alternative delivery option, now that most have access to fast enough internet connectivity, and sourcing from other providers becomes a possibility.

Will be interesting to see what is on offer next year from Telecom, and what pricing, delivery options and resolution are available.

Tend to agree. It's a mess when someone in Plast takes out P1, that's never a good event however you spin it.

On the flipside, Max tried to squeeze him out, possibly saying he was in front (just) so he's entitled to be there, but ultimately it wasn't sensible.
Max could have taken a wider line and still been ahead into the next corner, but closing the door (especially against someone in Plast) is never a good idea if you're on the outside.

There's not a lot of room to go anywhere if you're in the inside and being squeezed, other than slamming on the anchors and hoping you don't flatspot or slide.

He wasn't under blue flags, so didn't need to get out of the way, but regardless if you're leading a race you protect your vehicle.

Thats true. But Sky entered a new market, others could have, but didnt, but they could have. Larger ones overseas could have entered, but chose not to, leaving a nice empty hole for Sky. A true monopoly is where no one can enter as its all locked up

Also exclusivity does not equal monopoly as long as the bidding for the exclusivity was open to all; it then simply comes down to content owners perspective on rights and amount bid.

Agree. I thought he had got over his need to win on Turn 1, pass everyone now mentality. Seems not. Priority 1 is the chequered flag, you have the time it takes to watch a movie to get there. And you get free passes when others make these mistakes, so bonuses there playing the 71 lap game. Also bonuses for saving tyres when you choose your battles rather than slide and lockup on high risk manoeuvres
