I wonder if Young's put that 'player of the series' trophy on top of his locker in the changing room.

He could replace Conway OR Mitchell. and Mitch Hay would learn a lot in this kind of series and would not do worse with the bat than Blunders.

Imagine if Southee and Boult had played their home careers with the Duke ball.

Flap it, but he did his job. Now Blundell MUST do his and hopefully GP has a good day but if not Im not blaming him. We do have a long tail given the quality of bowling.

Young and Mitch Hay into the next test. Wont be surprised if Blundell makes a 60no and that enough for Stead.

Edit: Lovely shot for 4 by Blundell. He can put away the bad ball, but he makes me nervous when the ball is put into the corridor of uncertainty.

Did others watch that "My Home Town" from GP? Good TV series, but I learnt a lot about him. Hard worker, puts in more hours than your avg cricketer, so no surprise he could go from Batsman WK to Off spin all rounder, and so quickly and the avg already, true quality all rounder.

Edit: Thermo its not just the phone app, even the TVNZ browser version keeps collapsing. grrrrrr

and here we are exactly as predicted, GP having to rely on the tail (but a good tail), Conway, Mitchell, Blundell all out for nudda. There time is over imo.

Young in for Mitchell, Hay to replace Blundell with his FC46 avg. But do they stick with Conway, Im racking my brain of another quality opener without putting Young in second, which Id rather not as hes always been a 4/5.

Edit: Gorgeous offside cut shot by Smith for two, 250 on the board. Im pretty happy if we can put on 50, very happy with 150 after losing the toss on Hagley. Is becoming a flat track, but NZ has the patience to put it full and on 4th stump seam bolt upright.

Lol as per my script, GP is left to save the innings t20 style.

Edit: haha Eng down to one review. They missed the Ravindra edge and been reviewing some dumb ones since.

When that feature came on the screen, I thought you would enjoy it TeaLeaf. :)  A nice behind-the-player doco, seems a decent bloke as you'd expect. Did not know he was born in SA, or maybe I did and have just forgotten. Looks like they have a few players lined up for the series so will be interesting to hear about them all.

Today was probably an even result, maybe with NZ slightly ahead because they have the runs on the board. Far too many soft dismissals as far as I'm concerned, how many batters were got out by the English attack. Not many I'd contend. Bashir needs to head down to Whitcoulls and buy some Christmas cards for the Kiwi's who gifted him their wickets. Softest 4-fer you'll ever see.

I see Frankie Mackay is hoping for another 40-50 runs tomorrow. I think that might be asking a bit much from Phillips, Southee and O'Rourke unless Phillips is able to do some impressive farming of the strike. Really expecting Henry and O'Rourke to demonstrate why they have been the form NZ horses with the ball tomorrow. It's a seamer's wicket despite Bashir burgling four today.

Looking forward to play starting tomorrow, must be a slightly early start to make up for the overs lost today?

Yeh, Ive always liked GP, so was good to learn more about him. The guy does a lot of weight training.. I envy living down there, I love the outdoors.

Im expecting another 30 tomorrow. GP is on strike, but he might take a few to get going, if he can get the strike for second over. Southee can actually play supportive so if he plays well, another fifty is a possibility, but I think unlikely but if they do, that would be excellent play given everythig. a fast run rate too. 380, that would be scoreboard pressure for BazBall, plus the inexperienced #3. We saw Ind choke trying to hit 5rpo against us and I think this is a better strike bowing lineup for NZ. Two bowlers under 20avg this year plus a speedy Smith who shows promise in FC and Southee to open up trying to extract some swing but also has a great wobble seamer and other tricks and of course GP, with their spinner getting turn already he could come into his own.

Im optimistic they will not respect the NZ bowling.

GP deserves to be #5. This is proving to be idiotic by Stead. Or #6 with Mitch Hay behind him. Blundell do a GP and realise you are not up to the task and hand your notice in.

Nice innings from Phillips, poor decision from Southee to have a go. Could have extended this innings a lot more if he had been more circumspect.

As The Flight Of The Concords said, it's business time for the King Of Hagley Oval. Hope he can deliver another 5-fer as he did against Australia in March.

EDIT:

Great to see Sir Richard and The Naenae Express, Ewan Chatfield, sitting together in the stand. Wonder if he's still driving the corporate cab or he's enjoying his retirement now.

Isnt that a typical Southee start then decides hes the batsman. GP I reckon would have scored 3-4 Centuries by now if he was up the order. Smith can now play the GP role of trying to get a 50+ with the tail. GP to 5 ahead of Mitchell, whose avg is starting to head back to the FC avg of 38 that he started Test cricket with, him and Blundell together should finally shift Steads long term plans

Yeh always great to see Paddles and Chatters together. The reality is Chatfield had a big part to play with Hadlees success, Id say the most accurate pace bowler ever from NZ, so it put pressure on batsman to try and score off Hadlees perfect line and length..

Geeze that looked heading down leg side to me from Hens, but Ump call, I thought a bit tough on Crawley to be fair. Thats DRS......

Edit: Oh man Latham drops a key player at slips, not a hard one.

Bad miss by Latham, seems to have a fair bit of tape on the fingers, hope that's not impeding his ability to catch the ball.

Yesssss, Smith!

Where's O'Rourke though, thought he should have come on before the debutant.

yeh to be fair it was dying on him, but still...

I thought it would be Orourke and Henry opening. I guess Southee wanted to see if the new ball would swing....

With Smith, the thing with genuine allrounders, if they miss out with bat or ball they will produce with the other. GP is the same.

Edit: Interesting, today is about amelia kerr. So good learning more as it changes my mind of assumptions. I thought she was a bit snobby young player. But wow, to open up about mental health is BRaVE. I really respect her now. Yes, this is how we nomalise mental health. Well done to her, that could help somebody struggling.

That delivery Smith to Bethell was a peach inside the corridor of chaos, moved away that couple of inches which is the amount of movement you need. Joe Root got himself out on that one, but  Bowlers deserve all wickets they get. But Smith needs to fix his nowballs or hes going to get a wicket on a no ball which would be a sick feeling.

Not going to boss this match if they keep dropping catches, bad luck for Smith who is acquitting himself well so far. England four down for under a hundred is a decent result.

EDIT:

Yes, nice piece about Amelia Kerr, TL. Don't think there are too many snobs originating in Tawa, just a decent down to earth Kiwi kid. Deserves all the success she has, will become the women's equivalent of Kane Williamson in time. Remember her father playing for Wellington, great to see he has spawned a couple of very fine White Ferns.

We had issues with dropped catches on the SEa tour, feels like we have lowered our standards in the field, aside from GP who is just too quick and can likely dunk a basketball the height ive seen him super man catch. Sp was surprised to see him drop a chance.

Edit: Time for a bit of GP I reckon, Bashiir was turning it sharp for Eng day one.

Brook is the key, he looks like the next Steve Smith with that avg of 57. another example of a player excelling at the highest level vs FC with avg of 43 in County Cricket. I hope Mitch Hay turns his FC 46 into Test avg 60 :-). Mitchell was the most extreme example, 38 to at one point 56 in tests. Blundell 33 was mid 40s for a while.

Oh come on NZ, thats not good enough. 3rd regulation drop by Latham today. Get him out of the slips. Dont give Brook 3 chances.

Wicket has flattened out and these two are starting to get on top of NZ. Yeah, another bad miss from Latham. He's normally pretty decent in the slips, I'd have him in there before Mitchell every day of the week and twice on Sundays. I hear McMillan going on about Mitchell being off the field, but Latham was in a wider slip/2nd slip position anyway so I don't think that was an issue. Just poor execution from Latham.

Second one dropped off Smith, he'd be eyeing up the 5-fer now otherwise.
