A mid-pack trying to unlap themselves past a leader likely doesnt happen very often, but shutting the door on turn 2 like that after taking a defensive line into 1 was a bad call. Learning curve for Max.

Why? If Ocon passed Max, they are both on the lead lap, so no blue flags AFAIK

I think this issue is just another common one in sport. Unless the issue is patently obvious, If I had an issue with Max, Schumacher, Federer, etc, I lose.

So what to many seems a marginal call at best, becomes an obvious fail for the lesser light

Huh? At the start of the race p1 and p20 are on the same lap, p1 catches up to p20 - they are still on the same lap, blue flags are waved to ensure p1 doesn't get held up by p20.

Ocon was a lap down went he came up behind Max, he was to unlap himself, and if he had done so, he is now on the same lap as Max, so no blue flag.

So, they FIA ruling is he can unlap himself, not fight for it. Noting that you would expect RBR to let him pass. Max said he's pushing me, implies Max wont let him past, Ocon got past, Max fights him, so with hindsight Ocon was right to fight him as even though the Force India car was not in Max's race, Max raced him anyway.

It's a pretty remarkable come back story but I'm a little disappointed that they're investing in a 33 year old who (let's be honest) was once a decent driver but is now somewhat of an unknown entity. Who knows how his body is going to hold up over the course of the season (let alone an entire weekend). I would've much rather seen Ocon get the seat or possibly Sirotkin (or another F2 driver).

I think Vettel will have get his head back together and not drop the ball 2019. Hamilton predicting Vettel will be his biggest rival again, but I see it the other way around. Was good either way. I like both guys and both teams.

Assuming the cars are at the same level as they are now, Hamilton will always beat Vettel as Hamilton is favoured so he will score most of the points, whereas Vettel and LeClerc will be sharing them

You think LeClerc has the same "say" as Kimi has? I would think Ferrari would have learnt a few things here and there ... but Ferrari only knows how Ferrari throws away their wins so ... you could be right

Reality check looking back over the season was Mercedes had the all round best car, which over a season won most of the time.

At periods other cars were more suited to particular tracks, and whilst we got excited every once in a while when it looked like other teams had a sustainable advantage, on average Mercedes simply won more and frankly most of the time quite easily too.

Unknowns to me is how can McLaren be soo bad, especially given they're still funded fairly well via the very outdated spread of income/winnings.

Ferrari were pretty hopeless at key strategy points, but I still don't think it would have made the difference. Red Bull were genuinely fast, but that counts for nothing if you've turned the wick up so far your car explodes regularly.

Only a significant car design rule change will shake up the field again now, and given what I saw this year I'd be surprised if Hamilton doesn't win again. It's certainly there for the taking again. F1 wrestles with identity issues regularly, and not having the same spec is a key differentiator between it and say indycar, where you could argue the driver has much more of an impact. F1 has positioned itself for years as the pinnacle of racing car design and technology, but that's at odds with the world now. Highly automated cars are the pinnacle of technology and electric contributions will only continue to improve/grow over time.

I'd much rather F1 saved money on freighting/transport costs, and then went hell for leather come race day, and with a range of skill points along the way, such as tire changes, refuelling changes, much much less reliance on aero that prevents slipstreaming and close racing, and multiple stages where driver input could cause issues if they fluff it, such as gear changes/braking etc. Without that, it all becomes rather processional.

Kimi doesnt have a say, he's there to comfort Vettel. Ferrari want wins, Kimi can't do that, Vettel is faltering, LeClerc will be the next big thing quite possibly. Then he will be No.1 Danny Ricc isnt far away either, another fumbled year by Seb, anything will happen

I think F1 is as due for as an overhaul as it's ever going to be. The switch to hybrid power trains was really it for me, I watched the Alonso Jimmy Johnson bit on YouTube where they had a 2013 car in the new livery, maybe the last of the V8's, sounded amazing. Even a few months ago prior to a race Martin Brundle et al were standing the pitlane when an old V12 car drove past, they all turned round and shrugged their shoulders and wished they could have them back.

Now I don't see that happening. But I think they'll push harder and harder for spec aero parts, wings and diffuser, to try and clean up the dirty air. The engines, well there's no going back, road car engines are getting smaller and adding turbos to meet emissions I guess, so there's no sense going back to the 20,000rpm NA days (hello Toyota).

I think the most interesting thing next year will be how the Honda goes in the Red Bull.

Dirty air is the main issue, if you can't stay close you can't pass. But we have seen plenty of passing this year. mercedes is the classic example, awesome in clean air, very average otherwise

When there is a new engine spec, the cars will be spread out, and that killed the last few years. Now the gap has narrowed, great, close racing, but they will change them again, and maybe Merc, RBR or Ferrari will be well ahead. End of the day its a Constructors series, so on that, the last 5 years has worked. But the fans want racing, not a procession of cars based on bhp.

GP3 cars are almost identical, Moto2 bikes all have the same engine. In those two series, the driver/rider is a big part

In F1, the team is 90% of it. Add in team orders, drivers that are the favoured ones, and you have a racing series that has very limited racing opportunities. But again, its a Constructors series, and on that, it works perfectly.

fully agree. McLaren can't catch a break. Helped nurse Honda back in and then they come right the year after they split?!

Aero is killing the sport and I too miss those engines. My spine tingled when I heard those the first time. Was scary hearing them echo around the buildings in Melbourne, or the cliffs in Monaco.

By contrast I've seen videos where people aren't even wearing ear plugs in Melbourne now. Sparky floor pans aren't a full substitute!
