I think they realised that the outer edge of hte skirt was flexing too much and it was causing downforce problems as the ground effect essentially pushed the skirt up and broke the air seal... I think they reinforced the edges and other things as well as underfloor changes and it seems that this has kept the floor airflow intact... Now we've had relatively smooth tracks (although Hungary is a bit rough) and this will make their bouncing/purpoising better but we'll see in places like Singapore and other street tracks if they have truly fixed the problem... they're certainly a lot faster and you can see both drivers now being able to push in areas they couldn't before... however the tyre warming is an issue still and they're quite draggy too.

Yeah rumours are he is off to Mclaren to replace Ricciardo.  Perhaps Ricciardo will end up back at Alpine (renault)...

I get the feeling this could be an option.

McLaren has not suited DR at all, and over two different seasons.

The staffing at Renault has changed now, so maybe there's some incentive to come home again there, assuming they'd want him and not the likes of Mick.

If Alpine was a better fit to DR then maybe he'd be pushing better than McLaren there like Alonso has been for example.

Really does seem unfortunate there.  Alpine have helped this guy along over the years and he was down for either an Alpine drive or to be placed in likes of Williams.

At the time he negotiated the drive with McLaren an Alpine seat wasn't available but if he'd waited just a little bit longer the Seb / Alonso changes would have freed one up.

Alpine by contrast may have been guilty of (like the All Blacks have been from time to time) tying up talent under contract even if they didn't have a place to use them, but have been screwed over here.  Signing Ocon on a multi year deal though, that just feels off.

So next question is who is filling the Alpine slot and DR would be a good fit back into that team, with a car that would suit him better.
He's a flight risk now and and underperformer, so his stock value has plummeted these last couple of years.

The design team at McLaren are also underperformed. Norris may be able to pull a quali lap out of the bag but his race pace can't match it. He's putting on a brave face but seems a bit down. Both drivers seem to have trouble getting tyres to work consistently.

The McLaren has been bollocks but they seem insulated from the kind of criticism that Ferrari gets for being a top level team missing its marks. They haven't been able to field a competent two-car entry for some time.

Not sure I'd say bollocks. They have shown up here and there, would have looked better if both cars had equal driver performances. May not be that far off from stepping up a bit. Two young quick drivers (I rate Piastri) would be a nice and stable 4 year period

Piastri may have some track time in the older Alpine but the McLarens seem to be oddballs. AFAIK the junior formulas and Indiecars are same chassis for all teams so it's not a given that he'll immediately look good.

Junior teams, yes I agree. But you need to look at the skill.

When Lando was there, quick but a whiner. George the same. Piastri is quick. Mark Webber manages him thats a plus. I would not be surprised if he ended up in RBR when they give up on Sergio.

If I was Alpine I'd be courting Gasly not Riccardio. As a Mclaren fan I hope they sign Riccardio and Piastri goes there.  But honestly; who knows. There's even been signs of Mclaren taking Pato O'Ward over to F1.

Just goes to show what goes on behind the scenes, its a science that you need to run in real time. You may nail it 1000% then a VSC or SC makes you start over.

Meanwhile Ferrari spin the carnival wheel and see what it lands on.

Two french drivers would make sense but they have a long history (same age, from same part of france, have raced each other their entire lives) they are ex friends now as often happens with two drivers racing competitively winning > friendship, it would most likely end up like Nico Roberg and Lewis Hamilton..
