Hamilton-Alonso it has to be. Top driver, miffed where he is, two year contract gives Mercedes a terrific option and plenty of time to look past that.

I'm not sure Hamilton-Alonso relations have thawed, I mean Hamilton was the reason Alonso left McLaren wasn't it?

Haha Alonso ... we will see a lot of fireworks ... even Nico's only option was to leave. But he left at the top. RETIRED by Hamilton.

Cars are made fast by the drivers. They have an input in making the car faster. Obviously if the car is miles behind there's nothing much that can be done. I remember when Schumacher went to Ferrari they were slow as. He made the team fast and faster until no one could touch them.

Balls, you have to be joking? One person has a goal and a family, and his life ahead of him, the other is a poor prat from SledgeWidge, that has no comprehension of credibility, fame, and handing himself. Thats why his comments that are off the cuff are so bad , and so truthful.

Schumacher went to Ferrari, yes. He was No.1. Remember Indy? And many others, scripted for the No.1 driver, not in ability but in name and market presence. So I cant say how Rubens or Felipe would have matched up, as it was a given.

These days if Max or Fernando went there its about racing. ON YOUR OWN. None of this Im the man stuff, you paid me $100 Mill over three years so make me win

Alonso was No.2 driver. Not in name but in practice. Lewis a a great driver, but he's not god, he is not a legend. But he is great for marketing, and F1 is a very UK sport

If Alonso went there, its about the track. If he dominates Lewis will complain, if Lewis wins, he will say he will take on anyone. Its laughable. This year he was gifted a race. No issue with that, it happens, but he said on the podium, this was my best race ever, and it was with no help. WTF. next race, asked about last race. "I don't remember that race"

My god. Hamilton and Rosberg are great drivers. But in character they are so different. After last year Rosberg showed a better hunger, which Hamilton has in spades. 7 in succession. I read a post on some overseas F1 website, thing about Hamiltons failures this year. The next guy documented Rosbergs issues this year and the previous two years, great reading.

Relations between them two make zero difference, Alonso can show that on the track.

The inference was that if you have Hamilton you are sorted. He will want Wehrlein or Ocon there, not Max or Fernando. I am sure if anyone of us here, went toe to toe and we got beat we accept that. That is NOT Hamilton. I foresee if he got matched he will retire for "these" reasona

Considering the fact Hamilton quit in Spain in a hissy fit after one crash I think if he's outright beaten again next year he'll probably quit.

I was a fan of F1 for a very long time, I stopped watching it a couple of years back as it has lost a lot of what it was. There needs to be a refresh from the top down. I prefer V8 Super cars, WRC and Touring cars.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Who knows. When he had that media controversy he bailed from testing that week as had a sore foot. He has lost "his " title and has bailed from testing this week as unwell. Its been noted in the media. He gets so many things wrong.

Thats interesting. While Merc dominated, there was still a lot to watch. Merc "separating" them, grrrr. I record all the FP, and quali and F1 Show and race.Although due to time I watch half the FP1, and the last 30 mins of FP3. Quali and off course the race. I really enjoy the commentary, that gives me a handle of all the nitty gritty

I tired of V8 SC. I tired of Nascar, although I was REALLY into it. I must give to another crack. There is so much more in ovals in oval racing. Mark Martin was my fave, I saw his car on display in Shreveport LA. They are quite small. Been to a race in Atlanta, he ran 3rd, Jimmy Johnson won. I digress.

Touring Cars you mean BTCC or DTM? How do you watch them?

Same here. I have sky, recorded races are hard to watch on mysky. So I get an electronic version of the race and scan/jog it until something interesting happens (from memory those tend to be team radio moments!). Giving sky back as soon as the 6 months is up.

Yes, although it didn't bother me. I dont need ear plugs at home :-) You can hear tyre squeals now though. Its a change, that happens. The V6 at 1.6ltr, TT, ERS, at 980BHP, that's pretty awesome. The overtaking has been good this year I thought, but should next year compress Merc, RBR, Ferrari, well it could be great.

I quit Sky when we moved. Did the "electronic version" Thats was ok-ish, but MySky is pretty darn good. So you don't watch the race, you FF through it? You can't get the feel of the race that way IMO. I ddi FF through Danny Ricc drinking from his shoes though, I got standards!

It's a fundamental change. I went to the British Grand Prix in 2000. 3.0L V10's, 19,000rpm, 800hp. The noise was astonishing. My brother keeps suggesting we go to the Melbourne race, but there's no point, it would be more watching the race on mute.
There's a clip on YouTube where someone is sitting in almost the same seats in Melbourne before and after the change in engines, in the first clip everyone is wearing ear protection, in the second, no one is!

So, either way you hear little? The new way you hear it without earplugs. The car are higher rated, around 980BHP. 11000 rpm although they can run around 18000 or 19000 but they don't due to engine regs, needing to save them. End of the day its about close racing and thats been good, despite Merc dominance. I recall when Shummy was winning, I watched the races live, 12 start 2am finish, hard day Monday. So often I fell asleep as they were processions.

I'm not sure how you reconcile lauding Nico for winning the last 3 races of 2015 after there was nothing remaining for anyone to contest, and then in your next breath dismiss Lewis winning the last 4 races of 2016 when the championship was at stake?

I get that the cars have an undue influence on results compared to driver skill, but look at the overall results for 2016 and still tell me that you think Nico is as fast as his teammate?

Most Wins: Hamilton (10-9)

Most Podiums: Hamilton (17-16)

Most Laps Lead: Hamilton (523 - 486)

Most Poles : Hamilton (12-8)

(and that's all despite the well documented reliability issues)

Deep down, even Nico knows that he's not as fast at Lewis. I suggest that he's retired because a) He's achieved his lifelong goal, and b) he knew that the circumstances that enabled him to do so are unlikely to be repeated.

Re. 2017 Pairing - My money is on Vettel. (and Fireworks to ensue) Alonso would be interesting, and a very different dynamic to when they were paired as World Champ and Rookie in '07 - but I think that Ferrari are less likely to have immediate success with the new regs compared to McLaren, and Seb may look to exit.

What I was saying that the last four races were Lewis going for it as no option and Nico not. Same thing happened last year, Nico went for it as its over and Lewis for some reason didn't seem to try, or wasn't quick enough as his opponent went out and raced hard. Title over, Lewis should have continued his winning way, and also with no pressure

I wasn't going to make a big deal of the reliability issues... that stuff is just a part of the sport. Yes, Nico had more issues last year, but the title race wasn't even close. (and it was only ever a mathematical possibility in '14 thanks to the crazy double points scheme in Abu Dhabi). This year, it's getting more attention than it normally would for two reasons IMO. 1) It was unusually one-sided. 2) Title race was so close that any one of at least 5 distinct failures "not happening" would have given a different outcome.

Alonso is a very good option - we shall see :-) In some ways, it would be nice to see Merc reward it's test driver or another up-and-comer with the seat, but that wouldn't give us all the spectacle that we want with two top-tier drivers going head-to-head...
