“Nothing changed at all during the race,” he added. “We had two people that were looking in that area at every car at every lap and pretty much every car bar one was doing the right thing within what we expected in a general sequence

Rules don't matter as they apply to everyone, except when one gets away with it, then another uses the same tactic and the application by the stewards suddenly changes. Thats 30 corners where one car gives the tyres a rest while the other cars put the tyres under stress and wear. Tyres matter in this sport

Yep, he wouldn't have been doing it if there wasn't an advantage to doing so.

Batman: Just put nails beyond track limits

In MotoGP they give warnings then you have to do a long lap. The long lap is a slight extra piece of track that they have to ride around which costs a few seconds lap time. F1 has two people watching these bends, it would be easy to implement that after say two warnings. No one will save a fraction of a second three times knowing that they will, not might, get a 4 second penalty. As far as I'm aware white lines in every other sport are in fact white lines

That's the thing, F1 only has pretty harsh penalty options.
Max V would have been silly not to give the place back regardless, as a risk of a drive through or 5/10s added on after the race could be massive depending on where other competitors are behind.

An overtake beyond track limits should never count IMO, it's not rally cross, and Max has tried this on in the past too.

In this case it's also clear the rules have been inconsistently applied, and most other teams were abiding by them, which gives an unfair advantage to those who are not.

The rules regarding track limits have been inconsistently applied for years, certainly since late 2000s from my poor memory.  I just wish it was constantly enforced, even if it doesn't provide a material time advantage... clearly the drivers do it for good reason, sometimes it may not be the fastest at that point but it may allow the tyres, brakes, engine etc. to have a breif moment of respite and therefore an overall advantage.  Being clear and constant that any breaches will be met with the black and white flag or time deletion would solve this problem without hesitation, yet F1 and the FIA refuse to enforce fully and consistently.

If the audio and the video went off Lewis for a little bit here and there it would have been. I guess Sky F1 is just a Hamilton show, pretty BS. I guess the free 1:30+ isn't worth talking about.

Dear God, now the UK commentators are saying they were worried about Red Bull dominating everything this year. I guess it was ok the last 8 years... Weird.

yeah coz toto wolff explains that there is a cost cap of $145 mil and rebuilding bottas' car from scratch comes from that $ and could limit their upgrade program

Is the cost cap only on Mercedes?

Perhaps if the gifting of a lap and the time was kept fair, then other teams would get more points and they could progress more.

Its like rugby players crossing the sideline, but dont worry about it. Then are down many points so here are 20 points to help you out, its crazy

At least they are finally addressing track limits

cost cap is the same for every team.

not sure if they can apply for exemption if your car repeatedly gets written off and needs to be rebuilt
