Didn't go last night, but did go to Sweden vs South Africa on Sunday which I expect will be a similar crowd size to Sweden vs Italy. Personally I would never use public transport for a weekend event at the stadium. Different story on a weekday. For the game I went to it sounds like the trains at least were a shambles leaving people behind when they went to the usual Sunday timetable without enough capacity etc. If you drive then I'd recommend parking in the Stout Street carpark which is only $8 to park in the weekend and virtually across the road from the station so not much further to walk than using bus/train, although not sure how young the kids are. Probably aim to arrive an hour before kickoff so there's time to look in the merchandise store, get some photos of the kids with the big trophy just inside the entrance, and queue for food/drink if you want. Enjoy!

That's precisely the thing mentioned earlier ITT. Metlink have done that for years - sticking to the normal timetable and capacity. For example, game ends 445, it takes you 15 minutes to leave stadium and walk to platform, train still uses normal scheduled departure time of 455 and leaves mostly empty. Why?

There was an article about the poor train planning in the paper on Tuesday and metlink promised to increase capacity. We'll see.

Quick question - I am heading to Eden Park tonight to see Spain v Zambia. Do you think there are side street parking around Dominion Road? Dont believe there will be a massive crowd.

I know there are AT event busses as well but considering I have young kids I am wondering if I could drive on in.

And then I saw they blamed the wet weather for more people than they expected getting the trains nearer the time, as if they thought people might have walked in from Tawa or Lower Hutt instead on a nicer day. So not only has there been a long time to plan for it, but apparently they didn't consider the possibility of it raining in winter in Wellington.

Going to USA-Netherlands tomorrow so will brave the train with parking not really being an option in the middle of the day on a weekday. Will go a bit earlier as want to check out the Fanzone properly beforehand. Might be a hassle getting home after but no time pressure then.

This is why I hate VAR and the introduction of technology in to what used to be a fast and dynamic sport. If the on-field officials had chosen to play on in that situation no-one would've batted an eyelid. We would've seen a goal, celebrated, enjoyed the moment and very likely had a different football match. But instead we have endless replays and slow motions which take all the context out of the moment.

The game has/is being ruined with the constant changes to offside and handball. It's now stopped regularly for 2 or 3 minutes at a time for people to watch endless replays and slow motions, to draw lines all over the pitch or to define which parts of the body define an arm. Even in the replays producing this picture you can't be sure the frame is stopped at the exact moment the ball was struck, so what's the point ?

The point is it fills a need for people to have something to blame, something to point at to explain a result they didn't want or like, it gives a talking point for the commentators and analysts, some drama to fill the 30 minutes they have rather than look at the game as a whole.

It's not just her foot, leg, hips and torso are all behind the opposition player. Only her head and shoulder are forward (even that is hard to tell) because she is much taller. I wonder if perhaps there is more difference in height between tall & short players in women's football compared to men's - total unscientific theory. So the offside rule seems to disadvantage taller players. If you made the cut off the chest area below arms then it would seem fairer but your point stands, it is shifting the decision point to another location.

It's got nothing to do with her being taller. Part of her body was over the "line" and so she's considered offside.

Moving the line wont stop the arguments, just which part of the body being argued about.

It's simple physics, if you are taller and leaning forward at same angle then your head will be forward even if feet, legs and torso are behind. So it means a taller player must have the rest of their body even further behind so that their head is not. Sure that's the rule but it definitely penalises taller players and maybe that will occur more often in women's football if height differences are larger than in men's - admittedly unscientific theory.

depending on when you get there it might end up being a bit of a walk. We got there 1h20mins before the game and it wasnt too busy, but we came on train.

Correct, someone will always complain about the decision

However FIFA are trialing new offside rules in the 23/24 season in some European leagues

Whilst I agree that this would be a good improvement to the rule, as it favours the attacking player. I think they're sadly misguided if they believe it will reduce the number of off-sides in a match. Strikers going to push the boundary of where the new line has been drawn just as much as they are today.

Yes we all know what the rule is today but the thing about rules is that they can and sometimes should be altered to get a fairer result on balance. In this specific example, if the Ferns player had been only the same height as the Phillipines player then she absolutely would NOT have been offside because her torso was behind and they look to be leaning at the same angle. It is only the Ferns player's extra height that pushes her shoulders and head forward of the other player.

And now I'm out too!

and thats how it always is with any sport, if only they ran a tiny bit faster, turned earlier, jumped higher etc etc.

Lots of if onlys, and nothing to dwell over and argue with someone on the net about
