Given sport's capacity to break my heart, I would not be at all surprised that with the pressure off, Daniel Ricciardo has a stellar return to form. Possibly combined with McLaren losing the Oscar Piastri case and have to scramble to find a third driver for 2023.

/Pessimism over. Looking forward to Spa. My favourite circuit on the calendar. Hakkinen double pass on Schumacher and Zonta the GOAT IMO.

Definitely, this was about when I entered watching the sport.
Damn I miss that high rev V12 engine, that was spine tingling and bowel emptying all at the same time.

Would have been V10s then. If you haven't already come across it, the Race's Bring Back V10s podcast - available wherever you get your podcasts - is a great retrospective on the era.

I went to a couple of races in person in the V8 era, and they had a stonking sound. From all accounts, the V10s were even better.

langi27:

Liam Lawson about to hit the big time with FP1 session at Alpha. Bet he is fizzing at the bung-hole. Hope he can post some respectable times. Dr Marko isn't one for giving out second chances. Its a sink or swim for Liam.

Yes, very much looking forward to seeing how he goes tonight.  There's an interesting featurette on Spark Sport about the opportunity which is worth a look if you haven't already caught it.  He talks about program he'll likely be asked to run by the AT engineers, and that might not necessarily result in blistering times for the viewers.  But hopefully he'll impress all the same.

I'll probably nerd out and follow his car cam for FP1 on F1TV, then go back and have a look at the main broadcast feed from Sky or F1TV to see what everyone else was up to afterwards.

I don't think it's quite sink or swim for Liam just yet.  While Marko and RB in general are considered to be fairly ruthless, the Dr. has spoken highly of Lawson in most of the press comments I've seen him make on the subject.  Of course, he could be equally generous in his comments about the other RB Juniors.

Liam is the reserve for both RB and AT, what may be more telling is if he gets a second FP1 session later this season.  I guess it's most likely the slots will be spread around the RB Juniors, but you never know.

Bung: Norris says the car isn't tailored for him in that he also has to adapt to its unpredictability.
"As a driver, you expect when you turn the wheel or do certain things, you feel like you should know exactly what’s going to happen, but that isn’t always the case. Sometimes you’d brake less and the car rotates more or grips more, and other times you brake more and that also does it — it’s very confusing at times."

Perhaps he spends more time on the simulator?

No. Its a year of new cars. New issues, new challenges. If the car is slow, its slow. In Mercedes case its fast, but on track its slow.

Im a Danny Ricc fan but he has failed. He cannot adapt. If you like a front end car like the Iceman, and it has understeer, you adapt. DR hasn't and he is a long way off Norris. At that level there is no excuse.

My fave was Monza, early chicane, Alonso and Webber, Webber got it done, but both drivers pushed it to the limit

Agree. The FP1 will be uninspiring as they are targeting setup, not lap time. When I watched that clip, Horner inferred he is there, about opportunity in 2023.

"My" take is he goes to Alpha Tauri replacing Tsunoda. If he goes well, he takes Sergio's seat 2024, but who knows maybe sometime in 2023.

So Audi appear to have finally pulled the trigger on their entry into F1 as a PU supplier to an, as yet, unnamed team in 2026.

"Audi announced its entry for 2026 at a press conference at Spa, ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, which featured Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG Markus Duesmann, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development Oliver Hoffmann, Domenicali and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

The manufacturer said they will announce a decision on which team they will be “lining up with in 2026 by the end of this year”."

Good times.

As LeClerc likes to say, "Okay boys ...... Let's Go!!"

This should make for a interesting battle within the VW Group, should the situation arise....Will an Audi Sport team be allowed to beat Porsche?

On the Ricciardo McLaren split...

Did McLaren really try to make it work\help Dan, or after a couple of races was there mid already made up, and then looking for excuses to get rid of Daniel?

From this video in the link below, Daniel is gutted.Yeah, it may have been a 'mutual' split, but I'd wager Dan needs a wheelbarrow to take the cash from McLaren.

Liam Lawson (AT03-04, Car 40)
First Practice Session – Best lap: 1:52.065, pos. 19th, 14 laps

“I’ve enjoyed getting to drive the car around such an iconic track, it’s been a crazy experience. The car was great to drive, the limit is so much further than I was ready for, it took a bit of time to get used to that, but I think I built up the pace steadily on the Hards and was ready to push on the Softs at the end, so it’s a bit of a shame I didn’t get the opportunity to really go for it. I want to say a big thank you to Scuderia AlphaTauri and Red Bull for giving me this opportunity. It’s been really cool spending the weekend with the team, it’s a crazy step up from F2. There’s so many more people than I’m used to, but having this opportunity is really great for us young drivers so we can understand what it’s like in an F1 team and learn as much as we can. I’ve loved every second of today and am extremely appreciative for this opportunity.”

 Jonathan Eddolls (Chief Race Engineer)

“It was great to welcome Liam back to the team, with him taking over the FP1 testing duties in Pierre’s AT03. The conditions were not straightforward for his session – cold temperatures, hard tyres, damp track, a Red Flag and rain at the end of the session – but he kept his head down and completed all of the work we asked of him. He did a good job.

I watched Lawson's session via the car cam feed, I thought he went okay given he was on hards for the only meaningful running he got.  His negotiation of the Chicane (miss the Bus Stop) and particularly La Source was average looking from in-car.

Once he got going and had some temp in the tyres he was holding it flat through Eau Rouge/Raidillon which was nice to see.  I'm sure he was wary of not putting it off the track so wasn't right on the edge.  Still, five plus seconds off Verstappen's times was sobering.

Shame about the Haas delay and then rain in the last ten minutes ruining his chance to get more laps in on the softs.  What did you guys make of it all?

Liam was great in the F2 Sprint race.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.
