Cmon Kane. Should have Declared with 10 mins turn around to leave an hours play at them for an hour. Well passed even a miracle, but they could draw.
At least the drinks break time wasnt wasted haha.
Well done Nichols. Colin hits the fastest 50 in our history, geeze southee on debut had the record, why didnt he have intensive batting coaching from the start.
I really hope Latham and Nichols take momentum from this series when it comes to the top teams. if we can get them fighting against the likes of SA/IND/ENG we will have a formidable top 6 mentally and scoring. Which will make the need for a high scoring all rounder a little less important. Sets us up for the next generation to slowly filter through to the side without us sliding backward if not competing with the top 4 teams consistently.
In saying that, they have been two very flat tracks welli and hagley once the grass burnt off.

Another reason to sack him as captain based on last game and this?
I think you troll a lot ;-p
His decisions are flippant is my only gripe, that and the last test we defended a winning total.
This time he got it right simply because he DOES have 2 days this time. Last test he should have declared earlier because they wouldnt have scored the total with an earlier declaration which is what he did with really low totals in the UAE, which is odd as their pitches are real flat tracks.
So its all a little hard to understand his long term intent.
Either way I like how he combines a bit of Mccullum and a bit of traditional captaincy.
So its heating up, but humidity is only 68%, which is still reasonable I guess, and with cloud cover and a semi new ball, I predict more swing this morning than last night. SL are done. They were done at 400. They do have Matthews back which saved them in the last test (#5 doing his JOB). So its going to be him or Mendis that are the keys, in saying that they still have a couple of handy batsman, but I cant see them scoring 200.
yep southee is in the zone, perfect late swing
Edit: Sri lanka sruviving some heat and half chances not going to fielders. if they weather this session, I change my prediction. I dont think they can bat 2 days, but they do have the batsman to make 350 and prob all out by tea tomorrow, its going to be the 2nd new ball that will be the most critical. which will be 15 overs before stumps. im not sure if we should take it this afternoon with the heat. depends on the clouds and if the wind stays away. but id be tempted to use Patel in the last session and save the new ball for tomorrow morning when a brand new ball will swing for 30 overs, which could see 3 wickets tomorrow morning, which will leave I think 3 wickets, which wont survive from lunch to stumps.
Wagner is an excellent swing bowler I think some batsmen love to hook and some teams. So whilst it worked great at home last year, I think he now needs to mix it up. Id like to see a yorker, a swing out, a bouncer, a ball slightly fully not swinging looking for seam, fill it in with whatever he feels the batsman wants least. His over the wicket, left arm, away from the right handed batsman is a freakin awkward angle, especially when it climbs off just back of a length. Very underrated swing/seamer Wagner.
As per commentary, Craig Mcmillan I was really skeptical of at first, but Latham and Nichols is proof in the pudding. Well done Macca.
Fantastic fight here from SL, that ball was moving very late from Southee, Boult was online, Wagner was awkward. Certainly playing better than their ranking today.
I expect a short knock from Boult and Southee after Lunch, then ask Wags to dig deep, Colin for 5 overs then Patel should get a bowl and we will see if there is any grip yet, but its his loop and bounce which is awkward, so going on the bounce the seamers are getting, I think spin or no spin he might be a handful, which is why he is in the team ahead of Sodhi due to the nature of this particular pitch. Sodhi is out sub continent go to guy, in NZ, even though he can turn it on concrete I feel his accuracy against better teams is the issue, but shane warne wasnt accurate to start or to finish, its why you invest in wrist spinners, they are costly but they are unplayable when it hits the mark.
That last ball from the first over after Tea from Patel is exactly why he can both produce dot balls but take wickets on bouncy pitches. He turns it a bit with forward dianonal off spin which makes the ball take off from the pitch vs the speed of the flight. so it doesnt really need to deterioate any more. new ball in 1 hour.
Just when I was about to say, Wagner needs to stop the bouncers and aim for the top of chest region which is the hardest to defend and if you have fielders on the onside either they save a four or take a catch.
And then he produces exactly that, just back of a length bang on the splice spot. Brilliant
Hmmm interesting conversation MOTM should we win.
Obvious choices would be Latham and Boult for the record 6fa admittedly whilst it was still green tinge, and some dumb shots. Runs in the second innings may seem a little less sensational given it was the best batting pitch ive seen for a long time day 3. But heck hes a Cantab delivering in CCH, so he might get it to appease the fans.
But I tend to agree with a couple of the commentators, Southee, for the 80ish in the first innings on a green wicket upstaging everybody, for his wickets, and for his excellent catches. All round great performance.
Id be happy with any of them as all 3 were significant to the match.
You can ask for an extra 30 minutes play if you can convince the umpire the game can be finished within 30 minutes.
With Matthews tearing a ham string, its unkown if he will risk making it worse, I dont think he will in a hopeless situation. So its a possibility we may end the test in the next 35 minutes.
Well played NZ. The weather allowing us to over score this game and bat them out of it. A nice bath tonight after a ice foot bath for Southee and Boult, and tomorrow morning, the only time its really swung proper, I expect the final 3 wickets to fall in that session.
So world #3 on the way. With India spanking Aus by the looks, it sets them far behind us.
I still rue Kanes decision in Welli, I know you cant rely on weather, but we had plenty to bowl them out by mid way 3rd day and thats when the declaration should have come, I feel 1 more wicket, Mendes, and the rest would have fallen around Matthews day 4 and we would be 2nd just poppn our noses ahead.
Either way, incredibly proud of NZ Test cricket, our WORST form of the game and something we play 50% of vs England.
Clearly Craig Mcmillans batting coaching has raised the standard of Latham and Nichols and thats helped a lot. I would like to see Kane use himself as a change bowler and fill and for us to include another batsman in replacement of Colin, but Colins stats dont lie, so I dont think he will get yanked. To be fair he has saved us in a lot of games, a bit like Southees first innings here.
If we can just get Southee to reach his natural talent with the bat we probably wouldnt need another batsman. Especially when Sodhi plays. Watling 38, Colin 30, Sodhi say 28, Southee 25, Wagner 10ih, Boult 10ish, really would make these big totals happen more frequently. You need that extra 100+ from the tail. I think Patel is what makes us feel a bit more fragile, but hes the right spinner for these kinds of pitches.
Thanks goodness India arent touring NZ to play tests :-). So its a 3 test series vs Bangers, if we can beat them 3-0 I can see us getting that second spot.
Now, get out T20 back to #1 spot and ODI in the top 3 (we could even get back to #1 if we beat SL and IND), we will be the best all round team in the world IMO. big call, but its shaping up that way. It was the T20 series loss in the UAE that did the damage dropping us to 6 and Pak to #1. We can fix it. We have a great T20 team.
Id like to see Munro and Latham swap positions in the ODI. I dont feel Munro has the confidence yet. But will be great to see our big hitters again vs Sri Lanka, Guptil, Munro, Seifert and DeGranHomme, throw taylor, williamson and Latham in there and thats a mean ODI batting team, although I would have liked to see George Worker get another look at, his time will come.

I still rue Kanes decision in Welli
You criticise Kane a lot. Do you rule this decision setting 660?
I like your commentary and your detail, but you go from game too game not stats. Im assuming C DeG is the best thing ever? IIRC he set a record in a test match, this match.
