It shows how quick the Merc was. They gambled on a pit stop which costs about 23s, from right behind leader Verstappen, with just over 20 laps to go, so the new soft tyres were worth well over a second per lap. I think Hamilton caught and passed Verstappen with plenty to go as well. I guess the only thing to have done was to have Verstappen dive in as well. But then he would have had to pass Bottas as well.

It is frustrating that they have to manage the tyres so much. I'm not sure if in race refueling would change that or not.

First few races was exciting at the possibility of something different.
Even McLaren creeping up the order was fun.

Bottom line is this is the same formula for the most part as the last x many years.
Big changes where delayed due to Covid, so holding pattern now ahead of hopefully some real change in 2022.

Funny how I avoid the news the next day, just so I can go home and watch the race highlights, and see Hamilton win anyway and say how hard it was each time in the post race interviews.

IMO it wasn't a gamble, Mercedes isn't great behind other cars, RBR is competitive, clean air, less tyre wear, Mercedes has more tyre wear behind, they lose, so had to try something different. RBR gambled that track position would work, that 1 second every lap would not happen, it was either that or pit next lap, be undercut and then be stuck behind, they lose.

Anyone know what the sorry if with F2 on spark?

I used to enjoy watching on occassion as they would have a race I could watch on Sunday.

Has spark dropped coverage or are the f2 races not running as often ??

the only reason to watch monaco is to see them all brush the barriers and wonder why they do not crash. until someone does.

Cant recall the details but IIRC F2 and maybe also F3 are running a different schedule, last race they had 3 races in the weekend, instead of 2, so its only a 7 date series or something like that

My fave memory was Markelov was well back, the virtual safety car came out and he was at full speed and slowing down slowly while others were crawling anyway, so with the way pitstops occured, he won the race. Fake-ist win I've ever seen, it was a joke. Then there was the time when McLaren were dominant and Coulthard was stuck behind Alonso for over half the race

Im just about to watch quali. Watched the end of FP3. My god, F1 is probably the most pathetic sport at times. Its a multi billon dollar sport. There is an issue with "limbo wings" The FAI rule is defined by movement in a garage test. RBR passes. Hamilton who is now apparently a designer says its worth 6/10 a lap. Rosberg why is the No.2 driver extroadninaire says thats unfair. Its the rules. Mercedes has a clear HP advantage, Monaco rules that out so they are crying. Its borderline pathetic.

RBR is closer to the Mercs this season, Ferrari is better but still pretty average, McLaren is better but nowhere near a top grid team, but at Monaco, Mercedes is faltering . Its a drivers track.

LEC crashes, thats unlucky.....  :-) He says he hopes for no bad luck when asked about chance of winning. Well, the last 18 GP's when the pole sitter led the first turn, won.

Congrats to Liam Lawson too. Marcus, wow, an unlucky weekend.

Not a lot to see as expected, but it shows when power is not the be all and end all, the grid changes. Driver skill matters, and it showed last weekend.

Hamilton set a new lap record for Monaco but when I looked at it LeClerc's qualifying time was quicker. who knows how they count their records

The official lap record is the fastest lap time in a race

Qualifying times are almost always quicker, although not so much difference now as in the peak of the first turbo era where they had special tyres and special engines just for qualy, essentially rebuilding the car between qualy & the race. They can't do that now because the cars are in parc ferme once qualy starts.
Often there's an 'outright fastest lap' recorded that includes qualifying times.
