Don't get me wrong, I would like to see the game being a lot more popular here, being a lifelong Arsenal fan and disliking rugby.

I just can't see it happening.

TBF if you're only looking on the tv news and in local newspapers you're looking in the wrong places.

So many people I've met have no idea how big this tournament is. It's certainly in the top 5 in the world for viewing figures.

I was referring to the popularity here not worldwide.

The worldwide viewing figures are calculated for any event by simply adding up the populations of the countries that have broadcast rights. It's a meaningless figure.

You're right.

When I was loosely involved with the 2011 RWC (I was working with a major sponsor on a project related to the Cup), we were given the viewing estinates and the actual viewing numbers for a lot of global tournaments, including Olympics and Men's FIFA events.

The whole idea was to be able to sell it up the chain as I was working for a US organisation and they needed justification for the investment to make our project work.

The viewership is not simply based on population bases.

The FIFA WWC didn't show on the list at the time, as we were concentrating on mens' tournaments and Olympics etc.

If you used the formula of population of participating or viewing countries the U17 and U20 mens FIFA WC's would be MASSIVE and far outstrip RWC viewing numbers (hint - they don't).

Went to watch Japan vs Spain in Wellington last night. Japan were amazing. In the first 45 minutes Japan only spent 27 seconds in Spain's and scored 3 goals. An amazing display of football.

It was a real clash of tactics, Spain had impressively drilled their "Tiki-taka" approach, but it all fell apart as soon as Japan managed to get possession and were then able to get to ball to their strickers, who were clinical in getting it in the back of the Net.

Japan simply sat back and waited for Spain to make a mistake and then pounced,

The second half was more even with Spain conceding less possession, but the final goal from Japan near the end pretty much summed up the game with Spain being totally out played.

Oranje looked flawless against a hapless and hopeless Vietnam, those long range goals from Brugt were up there with any man's game I've watched. Didn't see any other games last night but looks like Portugal came close to sending USA home in the dying seconds and England smashed China so must have played a decent game, they must be close to being favourites now.

Peculiar draw. If US and NL both continue to qualify they'll meet again in the semis rather than the final when they were in the same group !?

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Yeah just seen that. Odd, usually 1st and 2nd in the group would go into the opposite side of the draw but in this tournament they go into the same side. Because half the tournament is in NZ and half in Aus I wonder if it's to do with keeping the teams in the same country all the way until the Sydney final rather than having to travel between NZ and Aus multiple times. That does look to mostly be the case, except the USA and Netherlands round of 16 matches are in Australia with all the teams having played their groups in NZ, with the winner of each then having to head back to NZ for the quarter final. Melbourne and Sydney get those 2 games as well as another round of 16 match each with Dunedin and Hamilton missing out on a knockout match. Maybe a stadium capacity decision for knockout, but Adelaide still gets a round of 16 match and that's the smallest capacity stadium.

I don't have the energy to drill down but maybe the rationale is that this way the playoff games and teams are distributed fairly evenly between NZ and AU and all teams are subjected to similar amounts of travel? (Do the teams that were in Aus hosted groups come over here for their playoffs?

Incidentally, Lieke Martens - van Leer said the Dutch were pleased to be heading back to Sydney, they feel more at home there.)

No team who has played their group in Australia will play any match in NZ. The only travel between NZ and Aus is for USA, Netherlands, Sweden and whoever Netherlands play in the round of 16 (tonight will decide if it's Italy, South Africa or Argentina). The winners of those two games then travel back to NZ for the quarter final. Then whoever makes the final from from the NZ hosted side will travel to Sydney.

thought it was a good game. Good to see the old 4-4-2 still being played. Japan were able to use the center and fullback with the wide midfielder to play the triangle defence stopping Spain from getting in the right angle cross.

Also, I thought Spain were giving a little bit of space so Japan were able to play pace from midfield through the defence.

I attended the South Africa vs Italy game last night, was quite the experience and very well presented by FIFA.

In saying that, not fun be blasted by a strong cold southerly when rugged up to the max and still shivering!

So that's it for Hamilton and Dunedin (as well as a couple of stadiums in AU).

Only a handful of games left at Eden Park, that appear to be all but sold out.

It's been a pretty impressive tournament so far and I really didn't expect to be so engaged with it.
Some of the surprises for me have been based off the men's game - i.e. Argentina and Italy being knocked out at the group stage. Portugal getting the same treatment.

USA are lucky to have scraped through - they are getting a roasting back home. They have been so vociferous with regard to their quasi-political agenda that they have made themselves very easy targets for the "I told you they ain't as good as the men-folk" mob.

Lionesses finally romped a win and Sweden looking dangerous too.

Looking forward to the knockout phase now. It's been really good so far (although I am surprised every time I watch a WC - men's, women's, youth - just how many top players make simple mistakes on the big stage - fluffed passes, shanked shots, over-running the ball etc). Shows a certain amount of ordinary humanity, I suppose.
