A fun race. It was processional early on, with upcoming strategies yet to occur.

Vettel was stiff, Ferrari's fault, then Max

Bottas was stiff, Gasly's fault.

Max was dumb, Max's fault. Although he admitted it, maybe first time in 4 seasons.

Hamilton was sad all weekend, so no fire there

Danny Ricc was magic. All this talk about Max is fine, but Danny Ricc is a better driver and a safer driver and a results driver. Thats where the 4 year contract needs to go

1. in typical Ferrari fashion, they managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

2. it seems nobody is able to follow/overtake except for D.R. congratulations, payback for all his bad luck.

Yep, that was funny. After Max skittles Vettel, the latter sounds his tyres something wicked, dumb thing to do

1.Yes thats correct.  Toto said the same for Mercedes.

2. Who are you referring to? Ricciardo?

In any case, I thought it was a good race, and a good outcome for the season. While Merc clearly have a hp advantage, its not that large. Their package seem weak, relatively speaking. They are better in from and extremely average if not in clean air. Ferrari cannot run away, but Mercs can. Ferrari can stay close, Mercs cannot. Merc seem to have issues with tyre heat, and the cold FP and the warm race didnt seem to show any improvement. Ferrari just seem an overall stronger package. RBR is one tyre level behind. With that all in mind, it wont take many factors such as different strategy, VSC, SC, to spice an event.

Very entertaining race, but for all the wrong reasons.

F1 should not need Safety Cars or Leading contenders taking each other out to produce an exciting race...  I hope that they can sort out the aero problems soon!

BTW - Ricciardo was epic.  He sent that pass on Hamilton from impossibly far back!   (Though, he got a little lucky with Bottas IMHO)

Very true, plus when you have 3 engines and related componentry, and a fuel limit, you spend most of the weekend going easy, unlock the engine in Quali, and maybe a teeny bit in the race, and save fuel, and save tyres. I know there are cost issues, but let them run as many engines as they like or at least more than enough, take as much fuel as you like, if you want to bank on a safety car, I might just take an extra kilo or two and race more laps. Tyres? Your choice, go for gold, I want to race hard and long for 59 laps not 5.9

The wonder child vs the older guy took a turn yesterday

1. Ricciardo could have caused a major crash with Bothas giving Kimi victory had Bothas turned in. That was very very very lucky.

2. Don't know why Vettel cut off Kimi at the start, if Kimi was behind him out would have helped protect him. That was unnecessary.

3. When SC came out why didn't Ferrari pit Kimi who was behind the RBs. Not sure ifHamilton had the chance to pit if he did why didn't Merc pit him.

4. It will require SC luck and drama and rain to produce exciting races because aero is here to stay. As Toto explained aero and following are mutually exclusive.

Agree with all of this.

Despite constant talk of improvements to packages, we still don't have a setup that allows drivers to slingshot by like the good old days, without mechanical aides like the drag reduction flaps.

I'm also still wondering longer term how F1 is going to handle the fact that real electric race cars are getting very close to their performance, without a fossil fuel engine.
F1 is going to have to do more in the hybrid terms I think moving forward.  I agree about the give them lots of engines and let them race concept above.
Money wise that isn't going to happen, but work to save fuel on transportation of the team between events, and how you run your hospitality areas etc, but saving fuel and racing flat out are fundamentally opposed.
It at least seems a bit better than a few years ago, where the race was very clearly:  Race 2 laps, Fuel Save, Race 2 laps to try and pass someone who pitted, Fuel Save, Face 3 laps and come close but didn't race enough to finish strongly.  That was 100% yawn fest material.

Verstappen is a bit of a knob.  Exciting to watch, but gets by mostly on others getting out of his way to avoid a crash.  It's amusing that twice lately this has backfired for him.  We saw this especially last year with him changing direction very late under braking.  Him being good relies on others getting out of his way, and that's a bit naff. Stunning drive in the wet that time though.

I thought that at least Ricciardo was at least battling a bit with Bottas before hand, so he knew he was there.  Verstrapon sensed the guy in front was running a bit wide, and then drove into a gap that would only be there if he continued to run wide.  Vettel didn't, and Verstappen just smashed into him.  See paragraph above.

I like the punishment of the 10s after race penalty, but it doesn't help the innocent party taken out.

Cool to see Mercedes not as dominant, but expect they'll bounce back.  Ferrari were pretty good at the start of last year as well from memory.

1. Not lucky. Do you want to end your race?

2. Vettel cut Kimi off as he wants to win. And Kimi is the 2nd driver

3. Limi was there to hold back Merc for Vettel

What are you even talking about

1. Very lucky. Bothas may not have seen him or anticipated him to show up. That is not where any racing driver normally overtakes. Not GP2, Not touring cars, not even go karts. VS Hamilton yes. VS Bothas no.

2. As it turns out, Vettel had no protection from his team mate. When Hamilton leads, his 2nd driver Bothas shields him from the rest of the field, slowing them down etc. Let me take you back to Singapore 2017. Seems he hasn't learnt much from it.

3. No, Kimi was behind everyone. How do you hold anyone back by being behind them.

1. So you take the racing line and assume thats fine?

2. ???? Vettel assumed that Kimi will be behind, Vettel doesn't manage the race, why would he cut Kimi off to ensure he wasnt running second? Its a race. As everyone has seen, Kimi has a second wind this year

3. They didnt pit Kimi so he would end up out of track position and in front of the pitted drivers. He was holding Merc up, at least for a while. If you dont agree with me talk to Brundle etc who discussed him being used this way

1. just look at Vestappen doing a Ricciardo on Vettel, tell us what happened.

2. Let me take you to Singapore 2017. Unnecessary. Different day, same result.

3. Brundle is wrong. Worn tyres can never shield from brand new softs for 16 laps. Sitting duck.
