Auf Wiedersehen Deutschland.

Good on you Morocco for over-achieving in both the women's and men's tournaments.

Germany must be in shock , they beat Morocco 6-0 and Morocco goes through.

The World's Game is finally becoming a proper world game - some real upsets, with Germany probably the biggest amongst them.

VAR Goal-line tech helping Sweden send the USA on their way.  I've got a feeling that would have been deemed saved if the goal line tech wasn't there. Ironically it was probably the best US performance of the tournament, Musovic was outstanding for the Swedes though.

Speaking of keepers, van Domselaar was rock-solid for Oranje against SA.  2-0 was a fair and deserved result but that game could have gone other ways.  Now to try and get 4 adult tickets to Wellington stadium for Friday's game against Spain.  (FIFA tickets say none available and single adult ones popping up on the resale platform every now and then but I'd really like at least two seated together.)

Oh boy, watched the ENG - NIG game last night. England were unable to get past the Nigerian defence and the Nigerian attack was quite a handful but England held them off.

The game took a dramatic turn with a stamping incident resulting in England down to 10 players with extra time still to play. David Beckham's brain fade in the 90s came to mind straight away.

Somehow England held out for nil - nil after 120 minutes and won the penalty shootout. Can the European champions go further in the WC with performances like this?

A very entertaining game.

That was such a good match, almost ruined by James and her braindead stamp.

Like someone online said, if you're going to get sent off for stamping on someone, do it properly or don't do it at all. Preferably the latter.

She got played off the park (Nigeria clearly did their research) and should have been taken off earlier. She clearly got frustrated at not being able to make any kind of progress in the game.
Nigeria did such a good job of nullifying everything that the English had in their arsenal.

Absolute nail-biter, with a great outcome for the English.
I always feel for the penalty-takers. I can't take a penalty to save myself and there's less than a millionth of the pressure they're under.

I genuinely hate penalty shoot outs as a way to determine the outcome of a major match but unfortunately there isn't a better alternative.

As a side note I played football for 30yrs at a pretty competitive level and I like to tell the story that I have a 100% record with penalties.

Taken 1 and scored, faced 1 as a keeper when our was sent off and saved it. 2 out of 2 in a 30yr career is still 100%.

Ha ha. I also have a 100% record. I was a youth international and played as striker (and occasionally on the wing).

Between my youth career and later as an old fart playing geriatric football, I have never scored a penalty I have taken.

That 0 from 0 or have their been some misses?

Haven't played outdoor for 5 years or so but I was always a keeper. I can remember saving 4 penalties over the years, all in games we lost anyway. One of them was a double save, where I managed to get up and save the rebound only for someone else to smash the 2nd rebound in the top corner from the edge of the box.

2/3 record taking them. Twice went up to take one when my team were several goals up - scored first time then next chance a few years later put it wide. Then straight after the miss made one of my best saves ever keeping a shot out of the top corner pretty much straight from the resulting play. Was a funny couple of minutes.

Third one was in a penalty shootout when it went through both entire teams with neither of us keepers getting close to one, then I scored mine down the middle (it was a slight miss hit which was meant to go exactly where he dived so got lucky) then he hit his goal kick style over the bar.

Anyway so brainless from Lauren James. Guess you just can't take the thug out of the Chelsea. I loved the strikes from Daly and Kelly. That's how to take one IMO. Put your foot through it. Interesting that Nigeria's star Barcelona striker didn't step up to take one. Possibly doing a Ronaldo and hoping to take the glory one. It's a tough one picking the order as you shouldn't leave the potentially decisive one to someone who has never taken one but I'm usually in favour of the star player/regular taker stepping up early and putting you on the board. If you miss the first 2, you probably don't get to take the 5th one.

0 from about 1000. 100% failure rate.

I hate them too.  I wish the football boffins would go back to the drawing board and devise an alternative.  I reckon they should be able to come up with something based on set pieces.  Maybe have each team take a few corners each, add some constraints like not all 11 players take part, must be played in to the 18-yard box and it's deemed cleared when it's kicked out of the box or the keeper has control.

For me, you have to incentivise the teams to try and win it in regular play. At the top level no one is prepared to put a loss on the line in order to go and win a match. They would much rather take their chances in a penalty shoot out as that seems to be a more respectable way to exit a tournament.

Thinking bout this last night it is really difficult to make team want to win in regular play. Unless, now hear out my crazy idea. If there is still no result after 90 mins then by all means play another 30mins of extra time. If there is still no result after 120mins of football (and no goals scored in extra time) then eliminate both teams from the tournament! Probably won't get many votes but it would certainly encourage teams to play to win if they knew a draw would send them home.

Interesting idea - did you consider a draw in the final (like 2022) ? In that case do both finalists go home and 3rd place gets the trophy?

How about less extreme ideas like:

  • make the goal wider
  • play extra time without a goalie
  • golden goal in extra time

Golden goal has been tried before. Again, both teams prance around for 30mins not wanting to push for a winner for fear of giving the ball away and conceding a goal.

A grand final should never be decided by penalties. Replay a grand final is still no result after 120mins.

What if both semi finals are draws? Send all 4 teams home? I dont think that's going to be acceptable.

Replaying finals has been tried before too - but well before the era of televised games IIRC. To fit in with TV and the rest of the sporting season, you really need a result on the day and in the allotted time otherwise why not extend play indefinitely ( like in tennis ) until a result is reached.

One comment in this WC is there has been more 0-0 draws in this WC than in all the WCs spanning x years put together.

If teams are so good at building a defense, make it harder to defend / easier to attack, hence my suggestion a wider goal. I don't know what effect on strategy making the goalkeepers box smaller would be - but that would give them less ability to act at the back.

Maybe other changes like not letting the goalie operate outside the box , even with their feet ?

Make the goal wider - you're joking right?

Play extra time without a goalie - the team that kicked off extra time would win within the first 30 secs 99% of the time.

Golden goal - reasonable idea.
