We will at times, note I said at times. I dont see us being No.2 in T20, thats a ranking. I see us as 3 or 4. We had the best bowling combo for India, and are still 4th. We have only four specialist batsmen, and one other who is officially ranked specialist that fails every game, and bleeds overs. We have many middle order that can bat and have won us games, but we are lacking skills there. Past it? Possibly. Thats why we can excel when things favour us, as ENG had last night. When these planets align, we dont have the depth for it to last. Pity as this was a real opportunity. When ENG faces one of two other teams who have been playing on "India" pitches, typical sub continent spin friendly pitches, and they lose comfortably, thats what we could have had. Imagine beating India twice in India on Indian friendly pitches. But we faced a side on a pace pitch that they prefer, and are familair with. Bugger. Opportunity lost

ICC rankings arent an immediate guide but they are as close to it as possible. I think NZ spanks everyone in T20 due to B Mccullum. Our ranking may drop quickly if we dont find a replacement fast.

Definitely dont pick our test players for T20, I even think Williamson holds us back at times (but at least he can find the boundary with his great accuracy), Taylor for sure. Ryder would have been the best choice but as if NZ would get over themselves, its a bit like Shane Bond thing with Ian Smith. Too proud to play Bond for NZ because he signed what is now a normal process, IPL contract.

Hopefully we get some players with good eyes and fast wrists to make big hitters coming through.

Taylor for sure? As in Out or In? Out for me in T20 and ODI. Painful to watch, and painful for our RR and balls

Taylor out for sure, but ive been saying that about him in ODIs for 2 years now so Im biased already before we even talk higher run rate haha.

2 reasons NZ got to #2 in ODIs and T20

1: Aside from B Mccullums play, its his captaincy. Risking a loss to win. We cant drop that mentality and Im afraid Williamson may turn into too much of a S Fleming, which is like watching paint dry, works if you are Taylor :-)

2: NZ plays 40-60% less Test cricket than the big nations, Aus, Eng, etc.

But we need 3 x B Mccullum and one Shane Bond to stay at the top or even get to #1. So we need to get our players thinking about risk.

We need players like Munro who can quickly look at field placement and target risk and reward. Ie if you got a player on the infield rope but nobody behind him, thats a money loft shot if its in the zone or you can use your feet to put in the zone.

And unlike test cricket we can teach the young guys, you only need 4 overs of good batting to become a super star. 4 overs at 200% and you are done. if we can get 5 players who can do that and have some bowlers who tend to be sloggers anyway but give them some technique i think we are in healthy shape. Thats why i say mclenaghan and milne for me are ideal. both can smack that ball and both are potential wicket takers. But they just need some batting coaching on how to get the ball in the zone.

The other thing with Milne though why I said potential is, whilst hes fast, hes trying to play line and length. He needs to play with batsmans head and get some in swing happening. Fire 3 inswinging yorkers per over. Starc style. At the moment hes so consistent hes easy for quality batsman to pick off.

I also think Williamson needs to up his anti a bit, I dont expect him to be hitting 200% but 150% I think is minimum for everyone down to #7. The prob wil T20 is, the best bowlers dont always open and they dont bowl their overs in a row, so its not like traditional seeing off the new ball.

I use to hate T20. Im starting to like it now. I think it could be NZs game. We have some damn good softballers who play cricket as well. Just gotta scout out that young potential pinch hitters and get them going early on.

Exciting times.

well thats them dead set #2 now and possibly #1 if they win the tourn.

if you have 5 dead set pinch hitters, you only need one to come off and the other 9 to chip in. of course you need one of the top 5 to bowl a bit. thats the team id be aiming for. the wicky making up one of the 5.

Yeah thats a fair statement.

Going back to what I was saying about targetting pinch hitters early on, NZ needs to seperate its test players from its T20 players and a mix for the ODI. Munro is a perfect example. Its a shame none of them could go on with it in the final, but that cricket. We will hopefully learn from it from a selection perspective.

And please somebody select Guppie for IPL next season. Thats a lot of straight lofts for 6 we missing out on watching,
