Senecio:

Replay a grand final is still no result after 120mins.

With crowded fixture lists that's just not a practical option at the top level. And availability of venues would be a problem. And what if they are still drawing after the next game.

Personally I like penalty shoot outs. High drama in some cases.

I like penalties, mainly because I understand the physics and strategies involved in it.

However, being a lionesses fan for the last few decades, I think if Chloe Kelly is going to keep scoring the winning goal, I’d prefer it to be in regulation time.

I was disappointed to be watching tv news the other night - while this WC is occurring right now in NZ and Australia - and see the naming of a rugby team who will play months from now take up several minutes of air time yet the results of that day's WC games got tens of seconds, at most, afterwards.

The following night current WC action was also queued after a puff piece when members of said rugby team could be filmed doing a community good - arguably not sporting news at all.

Biggest sporting event this country has ever been involved in. Blows me away.

If you are talking about TV1 news it's been pretty much the same all the way thru. The don't have broadcasting right so no games shown live or highlights programmes so I presume they don't think it's in their interest to promote it.

To be fair they did feature it a bit more for the short time NZ were in it.

It's fairly typical of most sporting events in this country. If NZ are in the competition then you'll get a bit of coverage. As soon as they exit the competition it may as well not be taking place (according to the media).

I don't know about anyone else, but I am genuinely excited at the prospect of a cracker couple of games today.

This afternoon's game - Spain vs Netherlands is a mouth-watering fixture on paper. Which Spain side will turn up?
They've alternately thrashed and been thrashed, so Netherlands will have to either bring their A game or their calculators (to add up all the goals).
As a neutral, this is shaping up to be an absolute cracker.

Sweden vs Japan should be a Heavyweight clash this evening - Japan have the edge in my mind - they've played fast counter-attacking football with loads of aggression, so I think they'll potentially nick it, but the Swedes ooze class, so it could go either way.

Great to have such high quality on offer here for such a big tournament.

Speaking of the tournament as a whole - they are predicting that ticket sales/attendances will smash the previously held record of 1.3m for the tournament - a figure that's already been passed (1.5m attendees and counting)

They're now predicting as many as 2.3m could attend matches by the tournament's end.

Absolutely incredible.

Yes it has been a fantastic tournament, great turnout from NZ and Aus spectators, great standard of football. I have heard that it could pave the way for a joint Aus/NZ bid for a future men's World Cup, should include some games in the Pacific Islands.

Really looking forward to the first Semifinal tonight.

From all reports, Eden Park will be (once again) a sell-out. Atmosphere should be great, with so much at stake and such great football already having been on display, even the neutrals will be up for this!

Predictions?

My guess is that Sweden will be too strong for Spain.

2-1 Sweden.

Thanks for the heads up - I checked to see both semis are on Prime TV, which is handy.

I've really enjoyed going to the Wellington matches, it's been a fun mid-winter diversion from the plod of work and seemingly endless patchy weather.

I agree with you for tonight's prediction but what about the ENG - AUS side?

England to break Aussie hearts and crush dreams like the Euro champions they are?

I support all 4 teams, so whoever does well, it’ll be great.

I'm English, my wife is Dutch, we have family in Australia and our son plays professionally in Sweden.

We've done quite well with the teams we could support.

I volunteered in Wellington doing tech support. It was a great atmosphere and also great fun. Nothing at all onerous in the tech area because all the heavy lifting was done by FIFA and external contractors, but nevertheless just being around all of the activity was wonderful.

Nope, Aussies will hopefully give England a good hiding. No hearts broken either way but maybe some Aussie ego.
