This is where I dont like Williamsons Captaincy, hes 330 ahead, bowled Bangers out for 230 odd, but continues to bat. He needs to be more aggressive and declare, I know hes 49 short of 200, but he should put his faith in his team ahead of his own career, with the knowledge the wicket has also deteriorated with quite large cracks appearing. Hopefully he does it at lunch at least. Batsman like Wagner and the openers boosted us to 4rpo and it dropped to 3.7 during Williamsons innings early on.

Edit: Now Williamson is putting the foot down and his SR is now close to 4.5RPO. Hopefully he is considering a declaration at lunch. Its not that he NEEDS to, its that he needs to start practising the intent of putting the foot on throat. Then I think NZ can compete with Aussie when Smith and Warner are back and potentially #1 India. Considering we play much less tests #2 is pretty darn good none the less so clearly his Captaincy has many positives, its just this one point, more so in ODI's that Ive noticed he isnt as aggressive as Mccullum, or even Latham for that matter.

Lol well I know there was plenty of time left in the test match but he did wait until his 200 to declare. He is ALWAYS saying his runs are unimportant to him its about the team performance. hmmmm......

Either way, highest score ever by a NZ team. It may just be the Bangers but they are plenty capable of bowling teams out, NZ just took the same oppurtunity as the Bangers centurion and 5 centuries in the total is still brilliant.

Imagine having to come out to bat having to score 480 odd just to get to deficit wiped lol. IMO this could be over by the end of day 3, if not certainly by lunch day 4 which was my call day 1.

NZ just showing why they are #2 in the World, the real test will come later this year and next Christmas period with NZ for the first time in near 3 decades playing the Aussie boxing day test match with Steve Smith and Warner back in the squad.

So this is likely to be 6 test series wins in a row and should give us some more buffer ahead of #3 South Africa, 2 points behind us, Eng and Aus both on 104, India #1 on 116. If we can win the tests later this year and into the new year, it is possible NZ could become #1 for the first time.

Edit: Great to see both Southee and Boult bowling low 140s despite their being much less swing this innings vs the first.

There was a period for Southee where after Shane Bond left the Bowling Coach role he dropped to low 130s and his career has suffered to the point his average is teetering on 30. But the break he had has definitely been good for him and with his age I think its a smart move to manage him this way, especially for ODIs, I think it maybe a better option to get Lachlan Fergusson Test Match Fit to replace Southee every second test as Im sure at some stage he will a NZ opening bowler with his speed, he just needs the consistent line, possibly dropping from 150kph to 140kph and line and length 5 balls an over and the 150kph left for either a yorker or a bouncer.

Lol give that wicket of Tamim to Wagner, constant talk working on Tamim clearly got under his skin, its within the rules of the game, he didnt abuse anybody, he simply tried to point out Tamim's weak points, Southee bounces him he goes to follow it and hook it, but in end, bails out by falling over but left the bat up and catch.

ROFL. Tamim clearly upset by it as he walked off, Wagner in his ear for 4 overs. Mt fav was, "I bet you get an injury by CCH". lol

OMG NZ robbed by 3rd ump not knowing the technology again. AGAIN, the snicko is the frame AFTER it passes the bat the spike shows up, and thats in their guidelines, yet somehow, 2 games in a row the 3rd ump has got it wrong and their Captain lives and Southee misses a chance for a hatrick.

Bengladesh Middle-Late batting order showing exactly why they can be giant killers. They bat DEEP. I simply think they have been overwhelmed by Wagner and his short pitch bowling. Not something they often face consistently in over by over. Good to see some fight, makes me think the second test if the pitch isnt too bowling focussed they should produce.

If Bangers had not dropped Latham on 0 to a dolly of a slips catch they would be in this game right now. Catches win matches.

Edit: Brilliant delivery from Boulta to get the main man out on 149 with a jafa through the gate (bat and pad) to knock middles stump out of the ground. Love clean bowled, my fav method of players getting out. that should open a door, although Bangers do still bat deep.

One HAS to count the West Indies as a serious threat for the WC now, the way they decimated Eng in the final ODI, with Eng scoring 115 from memory in 23ish overs, WI just went ODI on it and got them in 12 overs. 2/2. After smashing Eng in the tests. Its anybodies match the 1st t20 but Eng going good, but helped by 3 dropped catches in the field, its often the way when a team has a bad day in the field.

As for NZ, I really think we need to remove Nichols and either take Watling or Seifert, I would go Siefert which is the selection of most of the commentators due to needing a real wicket keeper, both can bat but Seifert is more the quick scoring machine. Some may argue (which I do) Watling gives stability should the top fail and is also our only specialist at finishing an innings (which is what they want from Neesham). I would also play Santner simply to try and get a batting length similar to the rest of the world, Munro, Seifert, Neesham, De Grandhome, Santner in the middle to lower order, that should see us competing against these teams like England that put on 460 and West Indies nearly matching it.

NZ #2 ICC Test Ranking and #3 ODI ranking, must be the highest we have been in rankings in the more serious formats of the game. Although at one time we were easily the best T20 team and have slipped to 12, having not played a lot in the last 9 months and also losing that t20 series to Pak who are now the #1 team in that format.

I count 5 teams who can bat to 9 and most having handy batsman like Southee etc. Its going to be a very tight WC and I wont be surprised if the West Indies keeps one of the top 4 teams from making the next stage of the cup. Whoever beats the current top 4 and the West Indies will finish top of the 10, and it will go from there. I just hope we dont get unlucky with rained out games against the lesser 5 in the 10 team cup.

WOW this pitch is green now, not sure how on earth its not swinging or coming off the grass on the seam. It may do once it dries out a bit. But the ball wont start getting water logged until after 25 over.

This is another occassion where IMO there needs to be a reserve day, just in case this match can be resolved, like the match NZ lost needing another day (although I do blame Williamson for not declaring earlier in that one as the forecast was obvious it would at least spoil most of the final day) Not that it would help, the day after 5th day is looking to belt down.

the wickets between Southee, Boult and Wagner is amazing, picking up 4/5th of all test wickets since Wagners introduction.

In fact Wagner has both a lower average and strike than Boult or Southee. Yet ICC Boult just dropped to 8th from 6th overnight (should go back after this match), Southee 9th yet Wagner only 11th, seems a bit unjust.

Certainly none match Sir Richard Hadlee with and average in the 23s :-)

NZ should win this game now, looking like Baangers will be all out by Tea. That would Leave NZ 3 sessions to score quickly, leaving 4 sessions to bowl Bangers out. Only thing I can see saving them is Kane Williamson captaincy and drawing another test this summer by batting on too long.

Edit

Bangers showing NZ how to bowl on a green pitch, just present the seam upright. Fergusson would have been lethal here.

I think Wagner should be in the ODI WC squad. Its ridiculous leaving out NZs current best bowler. When Southee needs a rest Wagner should be there as a swing bowler.

Lets not forget he holds the world record in first class cricket of 5 wickets in 6 balls, with now bouncers and a lot of wickets tumbling.

Ross Taylor knows whats up with the Weather. NZ need to declare by Tea if not before. Hes batting near 100SR on a green pitch, dropped 3 times, a bit like Latham in he last test dropped on 0, you cash in and Ross is near another Ton hitting 6s and lofted 4s.

But with tomorrows showers, we need Bangers about 4 down by stumps tonight, regardless if they get our first innings we cannot lose and if we need 100 off 20 overs, thats easy these days.

Typically Smithy being old school he wants NZ to go on to Stumps. Lesley Murdoch suggested a declaration and got shot down but Styris agreed depending on the lead.

Edit: 6 to bring up his century, class Rosco class!

I know Williamson is on a path to be our best Batsman based on averages, but Taylor for me is like Martin Crowe, exciting to watch, able to be fancy like Williamson, but always puts in the big hits as well.

Great session from NZ mostly due to Taylor 160/1. So only needing about 10 runs. This is where I said the test will be won or lost by Williamsons captaincy, knowing tomorrow is likely to have showers. NZ need to put the foot down and mimic Taylors 6rpo and score a minimum of 180 in the next session and declare at Tea or soon after, given Bangers are only good for 200ish, 180 lead will have them under pressure with no possibilty of winning. The only issue is Nicholls is in who is not use to going at 100SR, then Watling who is more of a feeder. So I think they need to put De GrandHomme in next to get that SR rate up, even if he hits a t20 50 it will get the run rate up so Nicholls and Watling can SR of 80ish, 5rpo.

Henry not doing too badly. About SR70. Ross still batting over 100.

I dont know what Styris, Harris, Smith etc are smoking, the forecast has changed and looks like the rain wont impact tomorrow, so if we are 160 ahead at Tea, why not declare. Richardson was closest to this, given he was a conserviative opener his captaincy mind is the opposite.

It is shed loads easier to score runs than it is to get 10 wickets, so IMO thats more Paramount than worrying about a second innings of perhsp 50-100 runs.

Test cricket wins are 80% about bowling a team out twice cheaply. Not batting and batting to draw when you can win.

This will be the last test for me on Williamsons captaincy and his ability to put the foot on throat.

I semi agreed with that reported who caned Kane for putting his 200 ahead of the team.

But for me it was when he was around 140 which he should have declared and put foot on throat and bowl them out fast and cheaply. In hind site would have been about a 1 run and an innings win anyway.

Also here the Pitch is still very green, get our pace bowlers in asap, which will at worst case mean we get 2 new balls before the end of the match.

Another part of Williamsons captaincy that annoys me against better teams, is he bats on for the draw where he can declare giving and unlikely carrot but a chance of winning. Which is where Mccullums captaincy outshines Williamson.

When you are #2 in the world, believe in it, trust your bowlers and fielders and rev them up by saying if you bowl them out cheaply, we win. Every person produces when under a little pressure.

Be more aggressive Kane, please. After Baz retiring I think captaincy should have gone to Ross who has paid his dues. And then perhaps when Ross retires Kane will have learnt more aggressive captaincy with such a good team and he would possibly have got off to a better start in his career and now possibly would have a higher average. It was 2016 that took him out of the late 20s all the way to 50+

Heck no hehe, Id be surprised if we get a point for either of those teams series wins. It was last years winter tours (and the home matches last year) that did it, this will be our 6th Test series victory in a row.

It is largely based around Kane and Ross, but our openers have seen off the new ball very very well consistently. We then have Nichols improving, much like Kane did when he was averaging 20 odd, keep faith and look what happens, BJ Watling would be in the top 3 keepers in the World, his speed to take the bails off is up there with MS Dhoni and his batting average shows his worth there and our last batsman Colin has been instrumental at adding quick totals when needed. You then have World #6 (was and will be concluding this match) and #9 and #11 in Boult, Southee, Wagner, they have 400 of the last 500 Test Wickets. I can only guess Wagner is not higher as he does not get selected for sub continent, but he should be unless we pick 3 spinners. Wagner was 1 wicket off Richard Hadlees race to 100 test wickets. People think hes just a bouncer, far from it, hes as skilled as the other two at swing, as seen in his video of youtube when he took a world record for 1st class, 5 wickets in 6 balls.

Obviously our team playing not as much test cricket as Ind, Eng, Aus is a handy cap, also we have had SL and Pak the last 2 seasons at home, which we have helped to lower their ranking lol. But playing the Boxing day test at the MCG this year is a clear show of respect to where we are in the world of cricket, its been 25 years since that occurred.

Back to this game:

They are ahead by 150 now, time to Declare Kane, forget Taylor is on 176, we know you would do it if that was your score lol.

In all honesty anything 150+ to lunch is plenty. So they score 250 all out by lunch tomorrow. That leaves us a 2 sessions and 30 minutes to score 120., 60+ overs. 2rpo. Basically we can chase down anything with approximately 1 session needed.

So declare and bowl them out and we can say we won a test match in 2 days, getting some extra worthy points for our ICC ranking.

No, it is 100% correct.

The ICC have set the rules and how rankings are calculated. We are #2 by their rules. The ranking value is determined by points/matches played over the last 3 years (IIRC). Bit of an explanation here: http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci-icc/content/story/874363.html
