Thanks for all the tips everyone.

Another question without starting a new topic - is it best to convert to all currencies needed now, or just leave in NZD and choose to pay in local currency each time? We'll need a few currencies (Pound, Euro, Swiss) so for what is left in one will need to be transferred to another once finished using that currency. Does keeping it all in NZD work out better than transferring to Euro, then again to Pound once finished with Euro?

I guess it really comes down to your view on what the FX rates are going to do - which isn't easy.  If you think Kiwi could get weaker then change now, and vice versa.  If you have no view and don't want the risk, then estimate your needs and change now.  In that case, also have some as backup in NZD.

Wise is pretty good at taking money from other currencies 'on the fly' as needed, including automatically splitting a payment between two (or more) available balances.  e.g. we had paid an accom bill in Canada greater than our CAD balance,  Wise automatically used all our CAD balance and then topped up from our NZD balance (converting at the spot rate at the time).  From that point, my view was that NZD was appreciating vs. CAD, so we left everything in NZD and let Wise transfer on demand when we spent CAD.  We only did that in a 2 currency situation, but I'd assume Wise would handle using 3 or more currencies in one payment.  So probably no real need to keep changing from currency to currency.

I changed currencies at what I thought was a good rate but probably wouldn’t bother again once my Oz dollars run out on another trip. The rates chop and change daily so one cancels out the other.

For a first time user I would just keep it simple and leave in NZ$ to keep your holiday time uncomplicated. Remember Murphy’s Law, on the day you want to make changes is the day you don’t have data or internet to access the App.

I tend to leave everything as NZD or USD depending on how I loaded the card, and leave it to WISE to convert on the fly.

If I have a big trip where I know there is a great rate at the moment I might pre-convert some to EUR or GBP, but in general I don't pre-convert.

Thanks for all the tips.

Have signed up today using a referral code for a free physical card. All pretty painless so far. Just did the verify ID step which went through and gave me an NZ bank account number immediately.

I did make me add $30AUD during setup to order the card rather than NZD but no big deal. Presumably this means I can just add money via internet banking to that account number rather than going through the Wise app?

That seems strange that it's AUD.  When I opened my account the initial deposit was $30 NZD.

Yep, I just have that account number setup in my internet banking. Note that it takes a couple of hours to show on your Wise (unless, as others have mentioned, it's the weekend or public holiday)

My wife and i have our own Wise accounts which means we've got double the "free ATM" use when ouyside of NZ. Also as mentioned by @Lias it is very easy to move money between WISE users, and costs zero if you don't change the currency during the transfer.

Timely this thread as new Wise card holder.

So if I use an ATM in Istanbul, can I withdraw Turkish Lira from my NZD Wise account or do I have to have a Turkish Lira balance already with Wise? ie. asking if Wise will convert the NZD for me at applicable FX rate on the day, but not charge separately for use of ATM?

Just to confirm, I see that I have a bank account number in Wise with my name as the payee (which says money arrives "within 2 working days"), but also if I go to add money and bank transfer in the app it supplies a different unique account number with Wise as the payee. Which is the one you use that takes a couple of hours?

Sorry for all the noob questions! I suppose I could just test different amounts with each account number and see which turns up faster.

Yep, Wise will convert on the fly and debit from your NZD balance (assuming TRY is an included currency).  Alternatively, you could convert to a TRY balance in advance and then that would be used.

You get a Wise account number that you can transfer to.  I have that account number set up as a payee within my Westpac online banking.  To fund my Wise account, I just do an online transfer from Westpac, in the same way I'd transfer to any other recipient.

Is there somewhere on the app you can view comparative exchange rates - Wise vs banks?

I can do this via website but can’t seem to find it on the app?

Just use the 'Transfer Calculator' in the app.

I have also downloaded the Wise Money Converter App seperately. It’s easier to use than trawling through the Wise App and being verified each time. Quick and handy to have on your phone when in the shops.

For any new transfers I always do a test transfer of $1 to make sure everything is going to the correct account. Can’t stress this enough.

Thanks, but not quite what I am looking for. I would like to compare the Wise FX rate with local banks to see the difference - someone showed me this in their Wise app but I can't find it?
