They are two different detections. I wouldn't put much faith in what the Chinese detected, as they were just hand held ones that they where holding over the edge of the ship, so they could have been causing interference. So i think they have already been discredited. The important one is the one being towed under the US or Australian ship. It also has an echo, which is consistent with a flight recorders, as that has two pings where one of them would be like an echo. I think that it is highly likely it is from the plane, because it can't really be created  by anything else. But even knowing the broad area, it will be like finding a needle in a haystack when they get down there.

The FDR and/or CVR do not provide an echo type signal.  They are two separate units each with their own pinger.  Hence two signals.  They might sound like an echo but are two very separate signals.

Yes that is what I meant. This is why if they only heard a single ping every second, instead of two pings (one sounding like an echo) then it would be unlikely they heard the flight recorder. I believe the chinese one was just a single ping every second, and only for a short duration, which is another reason why that wasn't very  credible.

Actually I think they are saying they now know where the haystack is.

I was just about to say that too. It is still going to be like finding a needle or a spec of dust in the haystack. But they do have some pretty good tech, and probably a lot of classified tools. I think that if they have located the black box pings, it is amazing, considing the information they have had to work off. It does make me wonder if they have access to classified tools, that they don't  want people to be aware of.

Here are the locations of the 4 ping detection sites to date:

There's now reports that MH370 didn't skirt around radar boundaries to evade detection.

What do you believe?  If this has any truth to it then in my opinion the pendulum swings back to an in flight emergency rather than crew interference or hijacking.

You probably wouldn't believe a Malaysian news website over CNN. You don't know that these stories aren't just to increase traffic.

True, however the CNN reporter was quoting a Malaysian official, there's a problem right there. :)

Even the website got it wrong on the CNN correspondent name. CNN senior international correspondent Phil Robertson??? All I know It's Nic Robertson is in KL when I watch CNN

True, now an American news website on the other hand aren't at all interested in ratings, so they would never sensationalise a story tongue-out

Here is how I see it. The pingers have a limited range, a few miles I believe. That is linear, so the distance across the level sea would be less. So they can ascertain a 360 circumference around the ping location as to the maximum distance. Next, the ping signal would get louder as the ship got closer, then fainter as it went away? If so, that would narrow the window. So I feel the haystack is substantially smaller. If they ran the autonomous submersible across the same track, that must surely be the next step to get closer, work towards the louder ping, or if the ping dies, to criss cross that window where the pinger must be, given my earlier comments. If the ping range is say 6km, and allowing for the depth, the window must actually be quite small on the surface.

The concern is why are the ping detections not always at the same location? Whales? Dolphins?
