A heavily biased article though. If it can be shown that the safety of patrons is maintained, and that these drivers are capable, no issue. But I gather anyone can be a driver as long as the have a clean record, that doesnt make them professional as per the article.

Seems to me that Uber need to market themselves. That way their product will get the buy in from individuals (as in kiwis) and not Uber Ltd from overseas. After all, if the drivers are customers are kiwis, and it takes off, that will place pressure on the old guard. I'd like to know what The Taxi Fed does when it finds out its drivers are moonlighting?

Uber drivers need a P endorsement just like taxi drivers. And all the checks and endorsements doesn't make Taxi drivers very 'professional'. Here is Melbourne, I find most of the taxi drivers very unprofessional. They are often rude, smell bad, don't know where they are going, talk on the phone the whole time and have dirty vehicles. Uber drivers on the other hand mostly seem to dress well and keep their cars very nice, and are very processional about the service they provide.

The whole 'safety' element is mostly FUD from the taxi industry.

iirc it's been mentioned in the thread that most of the drivers were ex-taxi or working for companies not part of the taxi fed

Taxi fediration only represents a portion of the taxi industry. Mainly the old, expensive companies.

Shame the author forgot a tiny detail in his research called the law. Taxi companies can't change, they are bound by regulations to a large degree.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

The Taxi Federation prohibits any members from being Uber drivers. The taxi companies that are operating as Uber drivers are not members of this organisation.

The taxi federation reminds me of the crap that unions spout. "Our old fashioned way is the best way, this new stuff is all bad. We fought for years to get the cushy jobs doing nothing that we have got and we dont want to see technology replace us old farts with something better for the user"

I have no idea when I walk up to a taxi on the side of the road on friday evening that the guy in it really has a license. I am not familiar enough to be able to inspect the photo thing on the dashboard to see if it is genuine or a fake. It could be anyone in any beat up car with a sign on the roof and some easily removable magnetic signage put on the side of it.

The presence of a meter that looks like its made in the 1990's in the dash is also not an indication that it is accurate or anything. could be rigged for all I know. At least I know with uber the GPS and time data is being handed off to a 3rd party for processing so the chances of a crooked driver dicking the system is remote.

Why do some taxi drivers drive for uber aswell anyway? Is it because they've driven too many hours in their taxi?

No, its because they clearly see it as an easier way to get jobs and like the fact they dont have to hassle with getting payment at completeion of the journey and have no worrys about runners etc.

So the main reason they do it is becfause the taxi company isnt getting them enough jobs?

I got an AKL Co Op taxi from the airport into the city in rush hour the other day

I normally get 1-2 to/from Auckland airport trips a week

I'll never ever use Co Op again

Driver asks if I don't mind if he stops at petrol station to buy a V drink. Sure I say, no problem

He doesn't turn the meter off

I have him up about this, oh the meter we can't turn it off

$80 later I get to my destination. I'll have a discount since you didn't stop the meter please. Oh sorry you're paying by credit card I can't do that.

Go to find Co Op twitter account to complain. No, too old school for twitter

Find a contact me form on their website, provide all details, cab number, taxi driver name, reg number, invoice number, time

No reply.

Screw you then.

Co op are the worst IME. I won't use them or any that have something about being cheap in their names.
