There's hints of them chasing government support in that article. I sincerely hope none of my tax dollars are spent on this folly.

Gawd, what a totally gush piece of rubbish,

$60 wellington Christchurch,   Fleets of gliders,  maiden voyage,

Lets actually wait until they have a full sized version stay aloft for an hour or so,

Rather that a proof of concept model that pops up for less than a minute.....

Oh and if we are desperate for a low carbon interregional travel solution we have this thing called a railway, that we can electrify ( or use with battery/H2 power) and it can operate in bad weather too :)

Let’s get real. All of the projections connected with this (speed, height, distances, routes, times, dates, prices, passenger numbers and capacities, numbers of specific models, etc etc) are most absolute pie-in-the-sky BS puffery I have seen in a very long time. Not to mention all the regulatory and practical operational issues.

The whole thing is ridiculous and it will never happen in the way it’s presented. Pure conjecture and I’m surprised so many people appear to be taking it seriously.

absolutely, its purely investor bait.

outside of a couple of niche uses like ferry across lake or quiet inland water (small loads short distance, which is already being done), it won't ever be anything.

Just happened to see this this.

When this thread was live earlier, it seemed to me there were two main streams of serious doubt. The first was the likelihood of the developer getting the stated versions into service anywhere - due to all the technical, financial and regulatory hurdles involved. The second (and IMO the more important and difficult doubts - quite different and way less likely to be overcome) surrounded the likelihood of the NZ operator getting the machines into service in NZ - for all the myriad reasons discussed earlier.

It now seems that the developer is inching forward, so maybe the first set of doubts is being overcome. Even if that proves to be the case (and I would be happy to eat my words on that) I still remain totally sceptical about ever seeing them successfully in use in NZ.

$50m total is not really much. I believe they still don't have a full scale prototype, and $50m is a toss up as to whether it's enough to build one.

I continue to contend that it suffers from the downsides of both aircraft and watercraft, and the benefits, more-or-less, of neither.

The headline in the story linked below says “…. full-scale prototype ….” except that it’s not - it’s just a mock-up.

If you look carefully at the photo - and in particular at the support-cradle pieces - it looks like they have built a full-size but half-model mock-up rather than a whole 3D mock-up model.

A recent story on this:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/auckland-to-whangarei-in-35-minutes-ocean-flyer-signs-seaglider-mou-with-northport/VXKA334JRRFLFN3WYUKGJ4THFQ/

I was going to add another highly derisive comment - but I’ll just hold off …..

stuff as well, but i see they deleted negative comments and closed the feedback pretty quickly. this is what the 7th story on this now for something that is not even in full size prototype stage. someone over here has vested interests and pulling some strings in the media.

I really hope Northport and Northland Inc haven't put any money into this. If so they are pretty gullible. It won't happen not by 2026 not ever. The comparison to horse riders and their criticism of the model T is way off the mark. Simple physics provides the clues in this case.

Also the maritime speed limits in both harbours would mean 35 minutes would be spent in the harbours alone, that's assuming the whole crazy idea of a seaglider actually worked.

As I've said before electrification is not an enabler in fact it is a disabler in this instance. If these seagliders actually worked they'd already be in use with ICE powerplants
