I haven't used Jetstar for quite sometime and the recent local travel on Jetstar gave me another reason not to use it again.

They have a baggage policy now, a strict one that carry on baggage should not be more than 7 KG. This includes All items.

i.e carry on main piece+ handbag or a laptop = 7Kg.

I know all other airlines have similar rule but its only for the main carryover bag, not for handbags etc.

and these guys are so pathetic that it felt like they dont have commonsense.

I was travelling with kids and I kept my daughters'(3.5 year old) trolley to around 3kg which she can easily carry and put some of her stuff in my bag. so my bag was 7.8 kg and daughters bag was 3.2.

They said that i cant have 7.9 so have to move that to my daughter or pay $60 and buy extra baggage. well that has been sorted quickly with a woolen cap and water bottle removal.

And after that they kept delaying the flight every 15 minutes for an hour, My question is how fair is it to force your policies so strictly but not deliver the service you agree to on time?

Do we have any government regulatory who keep an eye on these things?

Surely we don't want more regulations so that something like this can be monitored or controlled.

Vote with your feet as indicated. Demand will take care of Jetstar.

The policy hasn't changed - it's always been 7kg per person (which includes your bag and small item)

What has happened is a clampdown lead by Qantas Group in Australia (that included Jetstar in Australia) and Virgin that saw strict enforcement of the carry on requirements because quite frankly people were taking the piss and paying zero attention to the rules. Earlier this year Jetstar started enforcement of their 7kg rule in NZ which had only been loosely enforced over the years with random enforcement at the gate and periods where they would weight things.

If you're unhappy with it there is always Air NZ who also have the same 7kg limit, but won't count your 2nd "small" item which can be a handbag or small laptop bag as part of that 7kg limit like Jetstar do. While Air NZ are pretty lenient with enforcement they do at times strictly enforce things (I've seen scales at the gate where every bag is checked) but don't try and abuse the rules with Air NZ and you'll find they're not so strict. Jetstar on the other hand are a LCC so should be enforcing this.

I wish Air NZ would enforce it better. I adhere to the rules, and it annoys me when I see people using far more than their fair share of space in the overhead lockers.

I was flying back from Akl yesterday and took refuge in the Jetstar area of the departure lounge (less busy!) while waiting for my AirNZ flight. The call over the PA left me a bit surprised.

(Paraphrasing SLIGHTLY but I promise this is 100% the intent and content)

"All passengers on [Jetstar flight] must report to [location] to have their hand luggage weighed and tagged. As a reminder you are allowed one piece of hand luggage and one small item (such as a purse or laptop) with a combined weight of no more than 7kg and this will be strictly enforced. No hand luggage will be permitted on the plane unless it has been weighed and tagged"

I would rather not travel (if at all possible) than travel Jetstar.

With that said, AirNZ isn't much better, the nickel and diming on all aspects of the experience is getting worse all the time.

I see this sort of thing all the time at Wellington Airport, especially people coming off internationals. The amount of luggage some people take as carry on sometimes impedes their transit through smart gates.

About time airlines started clamping down. Not just for their fuel consumption but also the convenience of other passengers who don't feel the entitlement to take as much as they can into the cabin.

Edit: @talkiet - I don't fly a lot, maybe a couple of times a year. I always fly Jetstar as I'm usually only going to Akl overnight for a concert (and, on checking, find Air NZ aren't anywhere near competitive). From memory, I've always heard them say this. TBH, I don't see what the issue is. They spell out their rules quite clearly.

I'm all for stricter enforcement of these rules. Over the years I've seen some shocking abuse of the weight/size limits; I once saw someone bring a full-size tramping backpack, complete with metal frame, on to the plane as hand lugguage and try to fit it into the overhead compartment!

I hope people don't think I am saying Jetstar is bad in an absolute sense... I'm saying that for my uses they provide a lower quality of service with lower reliability. They're also often cheaper. That's good. That means it's working.

But I'm the sort of guy that will spend a bit of extra money to manage risk. In winter if I have a very important meeting in Auckland I can't miss then I might fly up the day before instead of risking getting delayed by fog on the morning of the meeting. That means a higher cost for me than if I gambled on no fog in the morning.

Same thing with Jetstar. If I had to make an international connection and I had a choice of Jetstar or AirNZ, I'd fly AirNZ (especially if they were the international hop as well).

The cheapest possible fares are totally suitable for many people and many use cases.

Just not for me.

Expect this for most airlines given the rising fuel cost they need to find revenue elsewhere. The easiest and legit one would be from baggage fees as it has been stated all this time when booking a ticket. Just not strictly enforced. Just a matter of time before all bags must fit that measuring guide they have.

The trick is to take all the heavy stuff out and put in your pockets like portable battery, chargers etc.. Once the weighing is done you then transfer it back. My jacket has huge pockets - I think one time I literally put everything in my bag into my pockets bar laptop which I carried.

Yeah. But bear in mind that the reason for the limit is that's what the overhead lockers are designed for.
