Sure didn't feel like you felt that was the best approach when National was in power. It's easy to say when it's "your" ideals you want getting the backing.

Totally different when you feel that the way a party is going to ruining the country.

I don't know where you get that from. I didn't like Labour in opposition any better than I like National in opposition. Fish-slapping belongs on Monty Python, not in Parliament.

Man, I'd pay good money to watch Crusher Collins in an actual fish slapping contest with JA!

So you're saying Crusher Collins is a slapper?

I rest my case Your Honour, no further questions

I used to love Asterix but I think the humour requires adult comprehension or an extremely precocious child. There are an awful lot of very clever references to contemporary matters.

This is so far off-topic (not to mention off-colour) that it is hard to respond to. But Collins would flatten Ardern, no question about it. That makes her the better fishwife. Not the better leader.

I could never vote for National with Judith Collins at the wheel. As for Simon Bridges I will have to look again but I swear I have seen him on Car Dealers up and down Aotearoa, he comes across, to me, as a used car salesman

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I could never bring myself to vote for labour, green or NZ first with anyone at the wheel (if there is an actual wheel - not just a person behind a curtain pulling levers).

It's funny, I recall reading it as a kid, some 30 years ago or more, and haven't really looked at it since I was maybe early teens, but I was surprised how difficult it would be to read it. Our kids are pretty innocent and whilst my son is a good reader, it was well above his level.

What I recall from the books as a kid was the basics, mostly the action part. The politics only came back to me after a couple of pages.

Explaining the Roman empire to a kid, required an explanation on Romans and empires and by about the 3rd caption I'd explained every word and thought, nope not ready yet!

Same with Footrot Flats. Some very adult and complex situations in that.

With Asterix you also need at least a basic knowledge of European history. I think that was more likely 30 years ago than today.

Collins has been dishonest in the past..in fact a downright liar. If she did become leader we have a good 2 years to decide who to vote for. If Bennett became leader I would never vote for her.

bridges has an unfortunate salesman type manner about him with his diction..once again he has a couple of years to prove himself.

Amy Adams joins the race

Odd comments, and my takes, a bit humorous but also serious.

She said she wasn't scared of Judith Collins    Hmm ok. Gloves being ironed for combat

My view is Judith is a very strong opposition MP but we have to choose someone to take us into the 2020 election because we want to be the next government not in opposition."                   So she's no good in Govt but ok in Opposition, hmm ok

"I was born and raised in Auckland. I grew up with a solo mother. We didn't have a lot of money  Heartstrings, and Ive herd that before (C) JK

married, my sheep farmer husband Don...  Ah the Get Smart guy

I'm economically conservative, and socially liberal.  Ok, gets National and Labour votes, that will save election costs

Focus is on winning the 2020 election, and she won't be distracted by "petty skirmishes along the way", unless they help achieve the end goal. Ok, is up for a fight

Adams has stressed her "integrity" is an important characteristic in this leadership race.   WTF. I expect all politicians to have integrity. Stand up all those MP's who have integrity?  Ok, you guys are eligible to be PM, you others arent you can stay as MP's

On a more serious note, BE has OFTEN talked about unity and cohesiveness. That was fake news. I see disharmony here, the old faction and the new faction. I foresee demotions and retirements once this shakes out, but it or should end up being the unity once described.

I think you are being disingenuous. There is going to be some conflict between parties who believe they are best suited. Not all conflict is bad.

Happens in all reasonably sized teams. Politicians are ambitious by definition. Some jockeying for position is normal, expected and probably healthy.

I stand by my comments. But I certainly agree its healthy, as it shows a side of National that was bubbling underneath. It needs to change from the old boys school mentality. Labour had had its share of leadership changes, but I dont recall it went any further than leadership changes. Here its getting bit nasty. Im not scared of, better in opposition that Government are nasty things to air to the public. Some Nats dont get on well, some have dirty laundry, so the unity that Bill has said many times clearly isnt there, a classic old boys school situation.

Had this happened to Labour, the Nats would have been over it like a Ferrari at Monza. JA has been very neutral even wishing them luck. Thats the personality difference between the two parties. It may be that this over aggressive nature helped many swap votes last year. When the change happens, there will be demotions and resignations, but then you should have a unified and cohesive party. IMHO they are far from that. As to whether JK or Bill bailed for that reason, only they know, but in both cases its clearly not an in house long term decision made by the overall leadership of the National Party.

The comments I read are far more than jockeying. Even Bridges "generational change" is a message to the old boys.

Now is the right time to prune, the negatives will be gone and forgotten when they finalise and settle into what is looking more like a new fresh regime than the old boys club of before.

I think you are seeing what you want to see. I see people stating what differentiates them from their competitor. You can have unity and conflict in the same area. It's about whether there is a shared vision, and I think that exists. From Debate comes new ideas, proper rationalization of plans, alternative viewpoints.

I think it's wrong, but it seems a lot of people just want change for the sake of it. I'd lay money on the table that says 1/4 of the people who voted Labour couldn't name 3 MP's or 3 policies. I recall Campbell live calling a "labour stronghold" and talking to two people there. Neither could name 3 of either of those two things. The Government was changed because it was perceived they had been in too long. Some voted "properly", by examining the policies and deciding they felt what was best for NZ was x or y.

It's disappointing to see people wanting younger, *just* because it's not the same old thing. Older generally means more experienced, steady, its' want I want in my policies and the people who make them. If you want to "shake things up" you do it one or two things at a time. New ideas, younger people, introduced gradually.

I see some very bad things in the words future, with a movement against established norms. It's "trendy" right now, but people don't understand the consequences.

[Mod edit (MF): removed FUG breach).
