Trump's Legal Team Insists That "Abuse Of Power" Is Not Impeachable

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

President Trump's lawyers hit the Sunday political shows to push the idea that there should be no impeachment trial because the abuses of power Donald Trump is accused of are not technically crimes.

This is going to be a massive thread as I am now convinced Trump will win another term. When I say win, I do mean he will win because his party receives more votes.

I wouldn't make a large bet either way.

He has pissed off so many allies, on every level possible, I'm not sure he'll make it through the impeachment hearings.

To paraphrase Shakespeare "Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a Republican scorned"

And it is looking like the US economy is about to stall.

If it does, there will be only one man to get the blame.

The Washington Post - Tuesday’s Senate trial debate, in 5 minutes

EDIT - new title, new link, same content

Let’s start with the rules ...

1. Each side will have 24 hours to present its case, just as each side did in the trial of President Bill Clinton. [over three days, not two]

2. The trial will delay the big vote on witnesses until a week or two in, after opening arguments and questions from senators.*

3. The trial allows evidence that House Democrats gathered to be presented at the outset

4. Does designing a trial to benefit Trump break the rules?  No.

*   McConnell isn’t completely ruling out witnesses, so what’s his end game in delaying the vote?

He is likely hoping that by that point, a majority of senators will be tired and want to move on.  So, do you want to vote to extend this one or two more weeks? No, thank you.

Some choice excerpts from an interview with the rapidly dementing 'stable genius':

“We have to protect our genius,” President Trump told CNBC’s Joe Kernen from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“You know, we have to protect Thomas Edison and we have to protect all of these people that came up with originally the light bulb and the wheel and all of these things. And he’s one of our very smart people and we want to cherish those people,” the president said.

The president said Musk is not only good at electric cars. “I spoke to him very recently, and he’s also doing the rockets. He likes rockets. And he does good at rockets, too, by the way. I never saw where the engines come down with no wings, no anything, and they’re landing. I said I’ve never seen that before,” Trump said.

So apparently Trump thinks that Edison is still alive and he invented the wheel. And he likes rockets. They come down with no wings, no anything, and they're landing. Whee! Yay! Neat! What five year-old does not like rockets?

Note Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post, but it's reasonable to assume this story is accurate.

The "National Enquirer" is a known friend to Trump. For example their "buy and bury" way of handling Trump's many scandals such as Trump's affair with porn star Stormy Daniels.

The "National Enquirer" is the trashiest of trash journalism, frequently posting story like "Bigfoot kep lumberjack as love slave," "Gay aliens found in UFO wreck" and "Hillary CLinton adopts alien baby", "Ancient photo of Jesus found!"

U.N. report: Saudi crown prince was involved in alleged hacking of Bezos phone

Washington Post By Marc Fisher

...Bezos said that American Media Inc., the Enquirer’s parent company, threatened to publish photos of his genitals unless he publicly stated that the exposé of his extramarital affair was not motivated by the newspaper’s ties to President Trump. Trump and David Pecker, "National Enquirer" owner and AMI’s chief executive, were friends for many years, and AMI admitted to paying two women who said they had affairs with Trump.

...The U.N. report marks the first time a public entity has backed up Bezos’s allegations about Saudi involvement in the hacking. Last year, Bezos alleged through his security consultant, Gavin de Becker, that the Saudi government had “access to Bezos’s phone, and gained private information.” De Becker wrote in the Daily Beast that the Saudis were “intent on harming Jeff Bezos since . . . the Post began its relentless coverage” of the killing of Khashoggi.

Within days of Khashoggi’s death, as The Post published numerous news accounts about the killing and the Saudi government’s involvement, a massive Internet campaign against Bezos began, focused on his role as owner of The Post.

By the next month, the top-trending hashtag on Saudi Twitter was “Boycott Amazon.”

Relations between Bezos and the Saudi government have deteriorated over the past two years. After Trump picked Saudi Arabia for his first foreign trip as president, and Mohammed visited the United States in early 2018, Bezos’s company continued its efforts to make a $2.2 billion deal to build three data centers for Amazon Web Services in the desert kingdom — a project that seemed to dovetail with the prince’s desire to expand his country’s participation in the global economy.

AWS, which dominates the cloud-computing industry, is the most profitable part of Bezos’s colossal business empire. The discussions between AWS and the Saudis ended after the Khashoggi killing.

But a far smaller piece of Bezos’s business interests, The Post, proved to be what the billionaire later called “a complexifier.”

After the Enquirer published its exposé, Bezos did not deny the affair with Sanchez, but wrote an online essay in which he said he was investigating how the Enquirer had obtained his texts with his girlfriend.

“Certain powerful people who experience Washington Post news coverage will wrongly conclude I am their enemy,” Bezos wrote.

The Washington Post - Adam Schiff is knocking down excuses to acquit

Jan. 23, 2020 (condensed)

Given how firmly some Republican senators are ensconced in the right-wing news bubble, and how determined they are to avoid hearing facts that undercut their partisan views, it is possible many of them are hearing the facts on which impeachment is based for the first time.

Impeachment manager and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) took them through in meticulous detail the scheme President Trump devised to pressure Ukraine to help him smear former vice president Joe Biden.

Intentionally ignorant Republicans may have learned these things from Schiff’s presentation ...

  •     Trump mentioned the Bidens and Burisma but not “corruption” during the July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

  •     Trump followed up with a call to Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, on whether the investigations he demanded would happen.

  •     A text by a Trump appointee to Zelensky’s top aide sent 30 minutes before the July 25 call stressed that Trump was looking for an announcement of an investigation into the Bidens.

  •     When Trump told the media that he wanted both Ukraine and China to investigate Joe Biden, he was not pursuing corruption in Ukraine, but rather looking for foreign countries to smear the former vice president.

  •     The draft statement announcing that Ukraine would undertake corruption investigations was rewritten by Sondland and Trump lawyer Rudolph Giuliani to specifically include Burisma and the 2016 election.

  •     Giuliani openly bragged about interfering in an investigation in Ukraine.

  •     Ukrainian officials threw Trump’s corrupt scheme back in our faces when asked not to investigate their political opponents.

  •     Ukraine was confronted with a cut-off of vital aid in the middle of a hot war.

  •     The aid was only released when Trump was caught (and acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney confirmed it publicly).

... There is always the legally insane argument that abuse of power is not impeachable. But Schiff knocked that down as well ...

  •     Attorney General William P. Barr apparently thinks that this bizarre interpretation of the Constitution is wrong, as does Jonathan Turley, who testified for Republicans during the House impeachment process.

  •     Alexander Hamilton and other framers of the Constitution made plain they were seeking to prevent breaches of public trust and political crimes.

  •     If abuse of power isn’t impeachable, then the president is king. ...

BBC News - Trump rolls back US water pollution controls

today

The Trump administration is set to scrap protections for America's streams and wetlands, repealing Barack Obama's Waters of the United States regulation.

The move, expected Thursday, will dismantle federal protections for more than half of wetlands and hundreds of small waterways in the US.

The White House says the change will be a victory for American farmers. ...

Under the new regulations, landowners and property developers will be able to pour pesticides, fertilizers and other pollutants directly into millions of miles of the nation's waterways for the first time in decades. ...

Environmental groups say the new rules will primarily benefit property developers  ...

Fox are running pro Trump opinion pieces during the coverage of the trial, presumably as that rubbish isn't worth wasting viewers time on.

So, you can go to CNN or GZ!

Fox is a vile propaganda machine that will ultimately be responsible for the destruction of American democracy and the decline and fall of the USA. I wouldn't be surprised if it was secretly supported by the Russians.
