I have been following the impeachment off and on in a desultory, depressed fashion, having reluctantly accepted that the Republicans have all sold their souls and it was going to be just another Mueller anti-climax. Then suddenly Bolten emerges and Senators are waking up and the Trump defenders are flailing and McConnell is no longer in control and there is a new infusion of energy in the Democratic side.
What was fairly boring has become incredibly exciting. The outcome is no longer predictable. What further revelations yet await us? It is like a sports competition where the hopeless underdog suddenly comes from behind and scores a succession of completely unexpected goals.
Of course the overwhelming likelihood is that Trump will still be acquitted, though that is no longer an absolute certainty, which is also pretty exciting, but the real thrill is that he won’t get away clean. He is being mortally wounded by this and the things yet to come out and there will be witnesses and he can’t stop it. This really could be a turning point.
However it ends, this saga will be fuel for endless future House of Cards-style thrillers. When all the facts are known, there will be films and series productions and books and historical analyses. Trump will get the legacy he craves, though it may not be the kind of legacy he craves.
Life has become interesting again. Whoopee! Bring out the popcorn.
