Hipkins just doesn't sound like a leader to me. But looking at the rest of the Cabinet nor do any of the others. Luxon must be thinking it's Christmas again.

I'll take Ardern at face value. She looks and sounds knackered. Not many of us can appreciate how hard it must be working seven days a week and not an 8 hour day either.

Been thinking a bit more now, and its never a good sign if a country leader resigns so suddenly (less then a month before she goes) and not finish their term....something else is plotting imho

His handling of the Northland Covid situation wasn't great. Other than that, he's been pretty OK. I can't see him as leader yet.

Robertson would probably be the 'safest' choice, but I can't see him winning an election.

I liked her, I thought she was a good leader (still do!) and I'm sorry to see her go. I am inclined to agree that she is probably just knackered from all she has had to contend with. She deserves a good rest. I wish her well.

She is a politician; criticism comes with the job. Labour has had repeated major policy failings under her watch, other than being good at PR I'm not really sure what her legacy is going to be at this stage.

I think bowing out simply because you may want more family time is 100% valid. Being PM surely devours time and prevents her spending key years with her daughter. She won't ever get that time back honestly and a campaign grind is just more time not at home.

She's damned any way no matter if she stays on or bows out simply because people will be whiny shits.

I wonder if the election of the new leader will be -

A) - by popular vote; or

B) - The one that draws the shortest straw

Talk about being on a hiding to nothing, economy down the gurgler and negative public sentiment on numerous failed policies or inaction.

This comes back to us in the form of trade and tourism, as well as outsize prestige and influence on the world stage. The only place Ardern was not adored is here.

Fighting against the headwinds of Covid (that still affects supply and pricing here and globally) Ukraine (which affects grain and fertiliser and off course, oil) and inflation that all countries have induced with Covid support, is a hard gig. It will improve over the next 12 -24 months, or sooner (Labour hopes) but at her age why go through more of that. Governing is one thing but with constant headwinds is quite another. If she's not up for that, better to get out now. Scrolling through both parties, not a lot to see actually.

So cuddling someone on TV and banning some firearms is what you think makes a good PM? Don't even start me on the 'overseas' coverage. I think the measure of a good PM is addressing child poverty, house prices, major project success (Auckland light rail???, kiwibuild???). As PM she has seen failures in almost every policy she campaigned on.

The international press has not be as big of a fan of her recently. She was *never* put under pressure during international interviews. No-one asked her difficult questions. It's easy to smile and joke and come across as nice when you are being thrown softballs all the time. Key had the same scenario.

I don't believe her response to Christchurch was 'perfect'. I don't believe it was viewed that way by the Muslim community either.

What trade have we picked up since she took office, that could reasonably attributed to her alone? You might look into the recent trip into Vietnam where we got *nothing* and gave everything.

Again, tourism, is impossible to gauge given COVID so at best that's a wash. I find it laughable you'd suggest anyone gets on a plane because it's the country that Jacinda leads. Can you think of a single tourism location that has better coverage now than 5 years ago?
