The Washington Post - The 5-Minute Fix: Everything and everyone Trump is blaming for coronavirus

today

As President Trump acknowledges 100,000 to 200,000 Americans could die of coronavirus, he’s not acknowledging responsibility for his administration’s sluggish response to it, even though they were warned weeks in advance it was coming to the United States.

He’s cast blame elsewhere instead, even once saying: “I don’t take responsibility at all."

That was in response to a question about the administration’s slow rollout of coronavirus tests, but based on who he's blaming, it could be extrapolated to how he feels about the entire response.

Among the people and places he’s blamed:  [headings only]

  • China - For not doing enough to slow the spread of coronavirus.
  • Past presidents - For not building up the national stockpile of medical equipment.
  • Governors - For ventilator shortages.
  • Hospitals - For ventilator and mask shortages.

A spoiled brat, with amoral and absent parents, and the mental development of a 10 year old avoiding personal responsibility.

Who'd have thunk?

The Trump campaign issued a cease and desist for that YouTube video which speaks volumes, since it's literally just his quotes, and a graph.

Like most wanna be despots, he can give it out, but can't take it.

I think the idea replacing ObamaCare by the world's best TrumpCare wasn't that great.

Mitch McConnell saying Trump was "distracted" by the impeachment, that's why his response to the virus was slow... I think it's all the golf and political rallies. Plus, America is doomed:

The lack of a national healthcare system is causing grief, as each state has to compete in the open market. The lightly populated and poorer states can't compete against larger and richer state bids. It's ironic because these same lightly populated and poor states are usually very republican.

The other problem is since US healthcare is heavily privately funded, there's a strong disincentive to have extra capacity. Specialist care, like cosmetic surgery, is much more profitable and less hassle than running an emergency room, and keeping a few extra beds available just in case.

It reminds me of the quote from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars."

When you're drowning, reaching for the invisible hand of the market doesn't work.

An economist bemoaning the failure of capitalism in the face of the Coronavirus disaster. I suggest if you don't know the name Ayn Rand, consider yourself lucky.

Get ready for the $4.5tn takeover

Financial Times opinion by Jonathan Guthrie

Coronavirus dispels private capital’s postwar delusions of autonomy

One of the most moving responses to coronavirus has come from home-quarantined Italians singing together from their balconies. ...

The subtext was that interdependence is the only defence humans have against their own fragility. For postwar individualist philosophers like Ayn Rand — cheerleader for the primacy of private capital — the jig is well and truly up.

...Just about everything economic libertarians disapprove of is happening all at once. “If your house is burning, you have to put up with fire fighters flooding it with water,” sighs Matt Kilcoyne of the libertarian Adam Smith Institute.

Sadly for Mr Kilcoyne, the works of libertarian philosophers like Ayn Rand are among the chattels going up in smoke. Traumatised by the evils of communism, this Russian émigré coined an equally ruthless materialist philosophy....

Of course the vulnerable get screwed by US $1,200 stimulus check.

A number of people don't file tax returns, because either because they are poor or they only receive government payments.

These include children, students, low-income taxpayers, senior citizens, "Social Security" (government assistance) recipients, some veterans and individuals with disabilities.

In other words, the most vulnerable. They now have to fill in a tax form before getting a check.

Filling in a tax form is the US compared to filling in a tax form in New Zealand is the equivlanet of playing the game "Operation" versus doing brain surgery. I typically spend at least 40 hours every year filling out my US tax forms.

There's pretty much no way most people can correctly fill out a tax form without help. John Oliver did a great videos on filling out IRS tax forms.

President Trump now says that he knew how bad the coronavirus could be - he just didn’t want to tell Americans.

I knew it could be horrible, and I knew it could be, maybe, good,” he said Tuesday evening at a White House briefing. “ … I want to give people a feeling of hope.
