The Washington Post - Trump uses White House events to project return to normalcy while relying on testing that public lacks
today
At the White House this week, President Trump sat less than six feet from New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) in the Oval Office.
He invited small-business owners to crowd behind the Resolute Desk for a photo shoot.
His vice president toured a medical research center without a face mask in defiance of its policy.
The daily images projected a sense of confidence that life, at least for the nation’s most prominent resident, is returning to a semblance of normalcy during the coronavirus pandemic ...
Yet even as Trump aides have signaled that he could soon begin regular travel, the reality is that the White House has created a picture of security that is propped up by special access to the kind of wide-scale testing for covid-19 that most of the nation remains without.
Trump, Vice President Pence and their aides are tested regularly, and all who enter the White House campus to meet with them are required to undergo on-site rapid tests developed by Abbott Laboratories, which provide results within 15 minutes.
“As vice president of the United States, I’m tested for the coronavirus on a regular basis, and everyone who is around me is tested for the coronavirus,” Pence told reporters, amid a public backlash after he visited the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and violated its rules requiring all visitors to wear a mask.
It is a cocoon of safety that does not exist almost anywhere else in the country.
Governors and municipal leaders have scrambled for basic supplies; hospitals and elderly care facilities, dealing with the most vulnerable, have cried out for more testing; and workers at grocery stores and manufacturing plants are risking their health to keep open critical businesses. ...

Bloomberg - Trump Had Two Intelligence Briefings on Virus in Late January *
today
The intelligence community briefed President Donald Trump twice in the eight days before he imposed travel restrictions on China in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus, said a senior White House official familiar with the briefings.
In a Jan. 23 briefing, Trump was told the virus was poised to spread globally from China and that becoming infected wouldn’t be deadly for most people.
Trump said Sunday night that he was told on Jan. 23 that a virus might be coming but that it wasn’t of much import.
“They said it very matter of factly,” he said during a town hall broadcast on Fox News ...
.... so not a bigly problem ... 🙃

The New York Times - Mr. Trump’s War on Accountability
By The Editorial Board
May 4, 2020
President Trump can’t handle the truth - at least, not when it makes his administration look bad.
With his move Friday night to replace the top watchdog for the Department of Health and Human Services, the latest in a series of direct attacks on statutory oversight of his administration, it’s clear that the president remains committed to withholding the truth from the American people as well.
Mr. Trump’s latest target, Christi Grimm, is the department’s principal deputy inspector general, whose office issued a report a month ago revealing the dire state of the nation’s pandemic response. ...
For Mr. Trump, there may be no greater betrayal than being the bearer of unflattering news about his administration.
In recent weeks, the president has been working to cleanse his administration of officials he considers insufficiently loyal. (A very high bar indeed.) ...

RIP Congressional oversight (not that it's had any teeth during the Trump administration).

Interesting to see this image from US right-wingers. Up until now Sweden had been the poster child for "socialism", a far-right trigger word that seems to be used by them in the same way my dad, a product of the 1950s, used to use "communism" for anything he wanted to paint as evil without being able to clearly enunciate why. Wish I could ask them "so what you're saying is that we need to embrace socialism?" :-).

MURDER HORNETS NOT CONFIDENT OF MATCHING TRUMP DAMAGE
WASHINGTON STATE (The Borowitz Report)—Calling it “a tall order, for sure,” the newly arrived Murder Hornets are beginning to doubt they can damage the U.S. as much as Trump.
In a candid interview, a spokeshornet said that their initial plans to spread terror and carnage in North America have been totally overshadowed by Trump’s performance.
“Man, we been talking for ever about coming to America,” he said. “It’s a huge scene and we wanted to crash it like gangbusters. But I gotta say, we're struggling to top this guy.”
The hornet added that when it became clear that Trump was causing headline-grabbing destruction, “a bunch of us were for postponing the whole deal until Trump's gone. Then, with everything back to normal and everyone fat, happy and relaxed, we'd easy be the top troublemakers.”
Ultimately, the hornets decided to stick with their original launch date, but they're now confronting the unpalatable reality that “Trump makes us look like amateurs. I mean, we’re murder hornets, right? We’re gonna sting people, we’re gonna terrify 'em. But can we really bring the same level of terror and existential despair to the U.S. as Trump? Nope. We're damn good at what we do but this guy's some kinda evil genius."

Disappointing news again. His valet tested positive but he and Pence tested negative.
The only way he is going to catch it is if we manage to attach the virus to Rupert Murdoch's backside. Trump licks that on a regular basis.

UNSKILLED MAN KEEPS JOB DESPITE RECORD U.S. UNEMPLOYMENT
WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Despite an increasingly grim employment picture, an unskilled American man remains employed, labor experts confirmed.
With millions applying for unemployment benefits each week, experts expressed bafflement that a man with no identifiable skills, talents, or competence appears to be secure in his job.
“This unskilled individual’s continued employment defies any kind of economic logic,” said Davis Logsdon, who studies employment trends at the University of Minnesota. “Of the 33.5 million Americans who have applied for unemployment benefits over the past seven weeks, approximately 33.5 million are more qualified than him.”
Even more perplexing, experts said, is the unskilled man’s persistent employment after failing at a series of other jobs during the past three years.
“The only explanation that makes sense, and I’ll admit it’s far-fetched, is that whoever hired him is equally unskilled,” Logsdon said.
Despite the man’s puzzlingly long record of employment, Logsdon said that ferocious economic headwinds could end his run, possibly as early as November.

FROM CNN https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/07/politics/trump-valet-tests-positive-covid-19/index.html
President Trump says he'll be tested daily for coronavirus after one of his valets tested positive for Covid-19.
Speaking in the Oval Office after news of the valet's condition broke, Trump said the episode underscored the fallibility of using testing exclusively to determine safety.
"What happens in between when you got tested and just a couple of days later?" he asked, saying there were "a number of days missed" between when the valet was last tested and when he discovered he had coronavirus.
Trump said he'd had "very little personal contact" with the man, a US military member, who tested positive. He described the situation as "a little bit strange."
Trump repeated that Americans were "warriors" in their efforts to overcome the pandemic.
"We’re all warriors together," he said. "I am, you are, we all are."
President Trump says he'll be tested daily - And a lot of States are still very short on test kits.
underscored the fallibility of using testing exclusively to determine safety. and "very little personal contact" - And Doctor Genius Trump still doesn't get the science.
"We’re all warriors together," - Good warriors LEAD, really good warriors lead from the front.
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
