sir1963:

All I know about the sharemarket is that those at the top need those at the bottom to take the losses for them.

Yeah nah.

The CAGR of the the NZX50 index is 9.15% over the last 21 years.

sir1963:And yet if we had 100 companies like F&P Healthcare (nz owned still)

it's likely majority owned off shore. Most of it's institutional investors, who hold 55% of the stock, are offshore and a fair chunk of it's private investors will be offshore as well.

Capital finds an efficient home and businesses need overseas capital to grow. Worrying about where a company is listed is pretty silly, it's fair more important where it's major operations are based. That's what provides high skill, well paying jobs.

This is true, it's part of why when the Australian Government permitted the merger of BHP and Billiton it did so only with an enforceable undertaking that the company could never move its operational headquarters from Australia. They considered that an acceptable tradeoff for the merger. I very much doubt you'd see a National/ACT coalition make such an anathema involvement in "the business of private individuals".

NZ Herald first sentence on this article indicates Luxon formally complaining about TVNZ popularity poll reporting. Is that correct? I'm not logged in don't know the details yet.

Just rank bad reporting in this TVNZ article.

Poll: Slim majority agree with public sector job cuts (1news.co.nz)

34% said cuts about right.

18% said not enough.

35% said too much.

So if you leave out the 18% there was a slim majority saying too many job cuts. If you include the 18% then a large majority in favor of the cuts. Which ever way, the headline is just wrong.

The article doesn't say Luxon made a formal complaint.

No complaint from Luxon, TVNZ received around 50 complaints on the 6pm news coverage last night.

50 members of the public called in to complain about the news broadcasting the results of a poll? ... Wow.

In the end

The poll is the poll, and its fair enough to conclude the Government has done many things that increase costs, lower levels of service and concern people.
Healthcare in particular.

Its not that there were complaints, is it just the usual from each side.
These days with social media its even easier to brigade on an issue.

I expect TVNZ has had orders of magnitude greater complaints on scheduling of Coronation Street over the years.

Winston Peters has also fired up his supporters to believe its RNZ and TVNZ fault that Winston can't control himself in manner of John Key or even Luxon, and flys off the handle.
ACT also can't accept that maybe there is a reason they poll lower than National.
Must be the media.

Antivax and such are looking for their revenge on media reporting facts on vaccination and such.
There are those that would not be happy unless TVNZ was like Whale Oil of old, or a NZ version of Truth Social.

Depends if that is some rewritten summary of the survey questions or if those are the actual survey options.

That particular formulation could say 87% of the people agreed with the government cuts but some of them thought it was a bit too much.

It would not be surprising if the professional who used to formulate survey questions was restructured and removed recently and this is the result.

It was the way it was reported that was the apparent issue. Mikey was quite emotional.

They could try complaining about the government on forums I guess.

Luxon thinks he's having it "tough", despite getting a pay raise? Yes, I know he'll donate it to charity, but still...um, righto.
