I agree - and history shows that calling a snap election is a dumb idea. However, going into an election with an unelected PM as candidate is also political suicide in NZ.

The whole thing just doesn't wash with me - the National Party has been an extremely well-oiled machine for a decade. Something's up (but what?) - I just don't believe that this hasn't been very well planned in advance.

If going to the election with a unelected PM as a candidate is political suicide, is the PM going to have to try and lose so they can retire or mislead the public in the election and win and drop out straight after the election and cause the same issue over again?

As you say, they have been pretty slick over the last decade and it seemed very odd to me that this would be announced out of nowhere rather than at a Conference or something.

Still, just because it seems odd to us, does not necessarily mean that there is anything untoward to be unearthed.

I really like Jonathan Coleman he was my local MP I voted for him twice. He is a really good MP. I think he is more center right than Crusher Colins and I was just listening to him speak on the radio. I personally really want him to get the top job. I think he will do well, mix it up and continue to do those things that Key did well. English in my opinion is probably most likely to pick up the job, but if he hasn't learned much then he won't be amazing. He is a good Finance minister and I would most definitely keep him in that job of I were Coleman or Collins and I got the job. I think Judith has a bit of an S show in hell to get it due to her public unpopularity but there are some aspects of her that I admire. I think Andrew little is a twit. I call him twittle. I think Phil Twyford needs to take charge of Labour before it falls apart. If you haven't guessed already I generally vote National or ACT.

Edit: I am pretty drunk right now, had a hell of a night with the kids. I wrote this post on my iPhone and it was a nuisance. Edited it on the PC.

Probably because it is ironic, considering what is happening now, and what they once campaigned againes, they are now doing.

I've been surprised by the number of people who have criticised Mr Key on a very ad hominem basis (not here particularly - in the world at large) and yet when you press them, the core of their argument is distilled into jealousy over the fact that he has more money than they do.

I find this particular chip on the shoulder distasteful as well as stupid. A man who grew up in a single parent family, living in a state house and went on to succeed like Mr Key ought to be a serious role model not an object of jealousy and derision. Resenting the success of others as a way of distracting yourself from your own mediocrity is a bit sad, really.

He is living proof that hard work and application will get you far in life.

Maybe it is the way he made his money. Being a currency speculator doesn't exactly contribute to the human condition.

The new PM the public most want is an MP I haven't heard of before called Unknown.

S/he got 39% in the poll.

The National caucus should have someone elected as leader within a week. No drawn-out, public, self-gutting required.

He doesnt need the money, or has an ego, he's done a good job over a long period. Time to get his life back for himself and his family. Pre Xmas announcement means the shock and awe will be over, its over now. New year, BAU for the new leader. JK is still there till the election, makes a lot of sense. His attitude now is very relaxed, humourous at times. The key, is to give his party a period where by election time, it is normal and settled. Pre Xmas also dilutes the talk talk talk as we all have other things going on soon

I really like Peter Dunne and he's contributed a lot in his time as an MP. A lot of the work he's done as Minister of Internal Affairs particularly with the new FENZ transformation has been applauded by a lot of people.

There are plenty of other MP's who have done absolutely nothing in comparision.

Should he have a party? That's another issue entirely. The law says he can, and if you don't like that then maybe you should be complaining about the law, not the day to day workings of the law.

I like Peter Dunne. He used to be my MP when I lived in Johnsonville and I've met him many times. I lived in Karori when he ran for Labour and beat National party incumbent Hugh Templeton and insurgent NZ Party leader (and funder / owner) Bob Jones in 1984.

But I definitely have issues with the single-seat rule in MMP that National has used to rort the system via 'zombie' parties like United Future (sorry - I typed NZ First for some reason - totally wrong) and ACT. Without those two seats from 'other' parties, National wouldn't be in government. Their vote share would see them with two fewer seats overall. Instead they get two freebies via what are now essentially fake parties. ACT was taken over by the National Party when Brash and Banks invaded it and dumped Rodney Hide. These are not ethical people.

The Royal Commission held after National's attempt to get rid of MMP in 2011 found the vast majority of the public also want the single-seat rule gone...and the threshold reduced to 3%. National ignored that as it suited them to keep rorting MMP.

But Peter Dunne has made a solid contribution over the years. I can't fault him on that.

Don't agree on the "good job", but otherwise, yeah.
