The Washington Post - Opinion - The GOP response to Trump is one hell of an indictment

31 March 2023

It’s no surprise that House Republicans leaped to Donald Trump’s defense after news of his indictment broke late Thursday.

What was striking, though, was how many elected GOP officials now sound like Trump.

  • Political Persecution,” Trump alleged in his statement.

  • “Political persecution,” parroted Reps. Diana Harshbarger (Tenn.), Josh Brecheen (Okla.), Claudia Tenney (N.Y.), and Paul Gosar (Ariz.).

  • Blatant Election Interference,” Trump announced.

  • “This is unprecedented election interference,” echoed GOP conference chair Elise Stefanik (N.Y.).

  • “An attempt to interfere in our Presidential election,” echoed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (Calif.).

  • Witch hunt,” complained Trump.

  • “Witch hunt,” repeated Reps. George Santos (N.Y.), Lauren Boebert (Colo.), Ralph Norman (S.C.), Matt Gaetz (Fla.) and more, including House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (Minn.).

  • Weaponizing our justice system,” Trump inveighed.

  • “Weaponizing,” chorused Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Reps. David Rouzer (N.C.), Austin Scott (Ga.), Rich McCormick (Ga.) and more.

  • Trump blamed George Soros.

  • Reps. Wesley Hunt (Tex.), Mike Johnson (La.), Harshbarger, Gosar and Sens. Rick Scott (Fla.) and Ron Johnson (Wis.) blamed Soros.

The Guardian - Rupert Murdoch took direct role in Fox News 2020 election call

31 March 2023

Rupert Murdoch took a direct role in how Fox News finally called the 2020 US election for Joe Biden over Donald Trump, newly unredacted messages in Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6bn defamation case showed on Friday.

It would be great if we call it for Biden as soon as he gets over, say, 35,000 ahead in Pennsylvania,” Murdoch wrote to the network’s chief executive, Suzanne Scott, on 6 November 2020, three days after election day but a day before Pennsylvania put Biden over the top.

Whenever we do it, it will all be over. Regardless of Arizona.

Fox News’ election night call of Arizona for Biden took most observers by surprise and enraged Trump and his followers.

So Rupert's not all bad.  🙂

Libertarians are a strange bunch. It's where extreme right-wing and extreme left-wing meet. Google " Ayn Rand" if you want to learn more.

I accidently came across a "Tuttle Twins" cartoons that literally taught that the UN human rights declaration, fundamental human rights to food, was misguided at best, and evil at worst, to the pre-teen protagonists.

Current Affairs: The Tuttle Twins and the Case of the Really Bad Libertarian Propaganda

...the twins soon learn that their rights can be violated by “bad guys,” and some of these “bad guys” can be in government, doing things “a lot of people like” but that are bad. Stepping into his tomato garden, Fred observes that it would be wrong for a neighbor to take his tomatoes without asking, and then says it’s just as wrong for the government to take them and give them to the neighbour against Fred’s will, which is illustrated with a masked cop stealing a bag of produce for the poor, providing a valuable window into the feverish libertarian imagination.

Washington Post: How the U.S. representative for Georgia Marjorie Taylor Greene’s ‘pedophile’ slur made it to ‘60 Minutes’

CBS anchor Lesley Stahl was shocked to hear that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stands firmly behind her frequent claim that Democrats are “pedophiles.” On “60 Minutes,” Stahl pressed Greene on her use of the slur, and the Georgia Republican defiantly responded that it’s the truth: “They support grooming children.”

“They are not pedophiles,” Stahl rejoined incredulously. “Why would you say that?”

Stahl has been roasted online for granting Greene a plum “60 Minutes” interview, which aired Sunday night. But the real problem with this exchange is that Stahl did not show any signs of understanding the longtime role of the “pedophile” insult in right-wing discourse as an expression of deliberate bigotry against transgender Americans.

As a result, Stahl squandered a high-profile opportunity to explain to a large prime-time audience what Greene and others really intend when they use this smear.

The “pedophile” slur, a companion of the term “groomer,” is regularly applied by Republicans and right-wing media figures to Democrats and others who stand up for transgender rights, including gender-affirming treatment for adolescents. Greene cheerfully flaunted this use of the term on “60 Minutes,” which left Stahl utterly flummoxed:

Greene: Democrats support, even Joe Biden, the president himself, supports children being sexualized and having transgender surgeries. Sexualizing children is what pedophiles do to children.

Stahl: Wow. Okay. But my question really is, can’t you fight for what you believe in without all that name-calling and without the personal attacks?

Greene: Well, I would ask the same question to the other side …

Man assaults women. Women are arrested.

CNN: Iranian women arrested for not wearing hijab after yogurt thrown on them

Two women in Iran were arrested after a man threw yogurt on them for not wearing the hijab at a store in the northeastern city of Shandiz, according to a video and report published by the Mizan News Agency, the state-run media for Iran’s judiciary.

Video of Thursday’s incident shows a man approaching one of the women who is unveiled and speaking to her before proceeding to grab a tub of yogurt from the store and throwing it, hitting both women in the head.

Iranian women risk arrest for not covering their hair. Many have been defying the mandatory dress code as part of protests that followed the death of a young woman in custody who allegedly violated hijab rules.

The video appears to show a male staff member removing the suspect from the store. CNN is not able to verify what was said immediately before the confrontation.

The two women were arrested after being issued an arrest warrant for failing to wear the hijab in public, according to Mizan News Agency. The incident is under investigation, and the male suspect has been arrested for a disturbance of order, Iranian officials said.

The NY Times - Rupert Murdoch Can Be Forced to Testify in Defamation Trial

breaking

The witness list for the Fox News $1.6 billion defamation trial now has more big names than a prime-time lineup.

Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch could be forced to testify in person, the judge overseeing the trial said on Wednesday.

Other high-profile Fox employees expected to testify in the case, which was brought by Dominion Voting Systems, include the hosts Tucker Carlson, Maria Bartiromo, Sean Hannity, Jeanine Pirro and Bret Baier.

Amazing thing is that the prime FOX audience don't seem to care.
Despite revelations from their own depositions under oth.

The circus of stupidity goes on with Tucker, Friends and Hannity.

Sure like the Russia Propagandist shows you have the 'odd' decenting voice.
Not there for accuracy or balance , but purely so everyone can knock them over,
and ignore their argument and move on back to alternative fact script.

Its a kind of lesson that you can just keep your alternative facts in the face of facts.

The Washington Post - Opinion - The new Clarence Thomas revelations are shocking. ...

06 April 2023

The Supreme Court’s legitimacy crisis just entered a new chapter in the form of a shocking report that Justice Clarence Thomas apparently violated ethics laws by accepting luxury trips for more than two decades without disclosing them.

In response, [Democrat] Richard J. Durbin, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, vowed that his panel “will act.”  ...

A report from ProPublica details that Thomas enjoyed extensive luxury gifts from billionaire and GOP donor Harlan Crow, from vacations on Crow’s superyacht to flights on his private jet to sojourns at various exclusive retreats around the country.*

This largesse did not appear on Thomas’s financial disclosure forms ...

total value over 20 years: USD millions!

The sequel to the above:

The Guardian - Clarence Thomas defends himself after undisclosed gifts revelation

07 April 2023

The US supreme court justice Clarence Thomas said on Friday he was advised the “personal hospitality” extended to him for more than 25 years by the Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow, detailed in an explosive report by ProPublica, did not have to be reported under ethics rules.

I have endeavoured to follow that counsel throughout my tenure,” Thomas said in a rare statement, “and have always sought to comply with the disclosure guidelines.”

The statement did little to dampen controversy surrounding the 74-year-old conservative or lessen fire from the political left.

Thomas is the longest-serving current justice, nominated by George HW Bush in 1991.

On Thursday, ProPublica reported that he has long accepted trips from Crow including travel on private jets and yachts and stays at exclusive resorts.*

Justin Elliott, one of the report authors, said: “This is the text of the law ethics lawyers told us he violated. Gifts – such as private jet travel – need to be reported, unless they are ‘food, lodging, or entertainment received as personal hospitality’. This is in the statute itself and predates the recent filing guidance update.”

* Just one of these holidays is estimated to have cost USD $500,000.

Were these rules in place when he became a judge? I got the impression they were a recent thing.
