Huh? How can you have 30-40B spent in a region and record employment and NOT have a big tax boost?

I'm not saying that - I'm saying that it built up gradually, will taper down gradually, extracting accurate regional data won't be easy, extracting anything from national data even when you're talking billions in revenue, it's split over many years, and there's variation from year to year anyway. The chart surely doesn't show that NZ took a hit - even if it also can't show a boost.

I read a restaurant review and saw the following:

"executed by a hard-working kitchen team, who were almost wiped out in one go by the last government’s ideas for immigration-tightening, this is beautiful, careful, ingredient-led Indian."

I obviously missed something, because the only Government wanting to crack down on immigration is the one we currently have as far as I know.

The latest donations basically provide every single man woman and child $9K. If you provided that 9K to the poorest in NZ, other than a massive increase in inflation, what do we think the outcome would be.

I am quite torn, we get a lot from the Islands etc, but I wonder if there is a better way to structure it. This is the crux at pretty much all the criticism of Labour right now, not necessarily what they spend, but HOW.

Sport certainly isn't a reason to tax New Zealanders and give the money to someone else.

AFAICT, the islands - including the Cook Islands (for which we do not even get reciprocal residency rights) - are little more than a burden. I'd be inclined to cut off their funds and rescind any rights they have to live or work in NZ over and above what anyone else would have, personally.

No :) That I could understand, but hardly reason for the reviewer to diss the National Government for. If anything Masala management should all should be in jail.

Storms and other natural disasters are normal. Everywhere - not just in NZ. The GFC isn't an excuse for NZ foreign aid contribution to drop relative to other nations. A clue to that is the "G" in GFC.

Does central and local government have insurance over infrastructure? I kind of thought they did, but not too sure...?

Yeah - but generally insufficient cover.

Chch infrastructure was under-insured - part of it negligently according to some, probably a fair bit of it due to how you insure aged infrastructure. For example, who would write out a policy for for full replacement cost of old rusted steel or asbestos cement water pipes with new PVC, in the event of a disaster? Sounds like a bad risk to me. I think most cities have a problem with things like that, investment allocated is the minimum required to keep things going as reliably as possible, no mayoral or council candidate is going in to an election saying "our infrastructure is stuffed - vote for me and I'll double your rates bill to fix it". When a natural disaster brings forward deferred maintenance needs on basically everything at the same time, then there's a big problem.

The City Manager in Chch, responsible for having adequate insurance (that probably wasn't) in place before the Chch quakes, then for a while in negotiating settlement of claims...

Is now the chair of Civic Assurance, and even wanted a pay rise in 2016.

NZ gets a lot back for that spend. It's important to maintain those relationships.

Additionally that Hosking article is pretty silly. In some cases he's conflating aid with infrastructure for NZ territories for just one example.

What do you think Labour would have done if there had been something like this at a National event?!

"Inappropriate" seems tame under the circumstances.

Seems highly irregular to me when these kids are teenagers. If I was a parent I would be seeing my lawyers about now...or the police.

That would be the reciprocity for NZ govt aid into Tonga.

Private donation by Tongans would be the comparator for private donation for NZrs into Tonga.
