https://newsroom.co.nz/2024/05/05/national-aims-high-while-struggling-to-take-off/

A look at the recent National party conference and how they would like to get their polling higher. This comment by Nicola Willis struck me as a bit, well, weird though:

“I remember as a child sometimes having a really fun babysitter … that would let you watch TV until 11 o’clock at night, they’d let you have ice cream and chocolate sauce and maybe raid the popcorn, and then you used to do all sorts of fun things with them.

“Actually if that then went on for another day, and another day, after a while it started to feel a bit bewildering and I reckon that’s what New Zealand’s had – it’s had people in charge who made things seem really fun, but actually what we need is a dose of mum and dad.”

Wait, what? Maybe Luxon was right and we've turned into miserable whiny whatever-it-was he said.

In other words, adult New Zealand voters are just children and should be treated as such. Good we have a strong schoolmarm to keep us in line!

Very surprised to see how vocal the Auckland council was in regards to how bad the 3 Waters was and how awesome the new solution is. (referring to the media release by Auckland Mayor, Luxon & Simeon Brown)

If they thought previous billion+ dollar plan was not going to work, I wonder if they raised concerns or if they weren't able to raise concerns due to the sensitive nature of 'co governance' factor baked into the 3 Waters solutions..

Either way, super surprised to see a politically neutral council retrospectively heavily criticising previous govt's solution vs this govt's solution.

Of course Labour came out and stated the obvious as their only criticism which is "it doesn't work for other councils" - well um, that is the whole point. Auckland is stupidly large and expecting what works for Auckland to work for smaller councils (which is basically all other councils) seems silly as pointed out by Auckland Mayor. Sounds reasonable to ask each council to put their own recommendation to the central govt rather than one shoe fits all approach anyway.

Majority of those adults that behave and mostly have the knowledge levels of children. I still don't understand how some adults maxed out their lending at 2.2% and purchased 1.5million dollar homes and now struggling when average interest rates always been 7%.

Or when reserve bank asked to cut down on household spending, NZ still had multiple fully sold out concerts.

Not everyone attending a concert is in the same group of people in difficult positions.

You are generalising hard - trying to make it look like 99% of New Zealanders are in dire conditions, and only the 1 percenters are ok to go to concerts.

Next thing, suggestions to stop eating avocado on toast.

Thought by using words "some" adults - was my attempt at not generalising.

Then you should go back and check out the commentary and indeed, even the public instructions from RBNZ to lenders to prepare for negative interest rates - you know, the kind of thing an informed borrower would pay attention to and base their decisions on. Or are we just ignoring things that complicate our attempts to judge the financial decisions of others?

When the RBNZ decision-making gets even a fraction of the scrutiny that people seem to want to apply for individual home owners for (checks notes) taking what the RBNZ said at face value, then we can have a chat. Until then, this smacks of 'have less avacado on toast' energy.

Doesn’t that mean the government treating Kiwi adults like kids, is actually justified.. Assuming you are an adult but claims to be not or if I completely read that wrong.

Apparently there has been some walkback of the lunch removal plan

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/kahu/free-school-lunches-scheme-saved-from-the-chopping-block-for-the-time-being/AMS754DDANDR3NKFCWW6VG7XK4/

I don't really understand the detail. I suspect that's intentional ; ).

Looks like it will just become junk food.

Worse, you will probably get BETTER quality food by being in prison, as well as better healthcare, etc.

Stupid

Article has some good news likely to reduce repeats:

The Government will also invest $78 million to extend rehabilitation programmes for the 45 percent of prisoners who are on remand.

That was needed for a long time.

My understanding is custodial rehabilitation program funding for convicted prisoners does not meet the demand from prisoners for those programs. The article does not mention any increase for that part. Surely that will be necessary for the additional prisoners envisaged by the bed increase.

Combine that with the 3 strikes BS...and we have an even bigger waste of tax payers money.
