The Washington Post - Coronavirus deaths on the rise in almost every part of the U.S.

today

New coronavirus cases reached record levels in states across the United States over the weekend, with deaths trending up sharply in almost every part of the country, well beyond the hard-hit Sun Belt. ...

The White House has moved to sideline Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious-disease specialist, scuttling some planned TV appearances and largely keeping him out of the Oval Office for more than a month after his clashes with President Trump. ...

Now Hillary would have had a handle on sorting this out. Yes, the US would probably still have had coronavirus reach there - but the Government response (IMO) would have been much more onto it.

Fred99:

Trump commuting the sentence of Roger Stone is pure fascism in action.

Not "a bit fascist" - it's the real thing.  Conviction for serious crimes now has no consequences for those loyal to the POTUS.

Edit to add statement from the WH:

Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Grant of Clemency commuting the unjust sentence of Roger Stone, Jr.   Roger Stone is a victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media perpetuated for years in an attempt to undermine the Trump Presidency.
In other words, critics of the POTUS are an enemy of the state, but the loyal can conduct criminal acts in support of the POTUS without fear of consequence. Pure fascism.

Presidential commutations are nothing new, Clinton commuted his business partner and his brothers sentences.

The thing that I find interesting is how the CNN/MSNBC articles about this commuting fascism, don't acknowledge the fact that Stone, as Mueller & Stone's trial etc showed, had no backchannel to Wikileaks and no secret info.  All he had was BS, one reason this ongoing theatre is BS too

You say you're not 'pro-Trump', but you seem very keen to defend this jerk, and his allies.

Just what is it that you are 'pro'?

PS: I liked your avatar better when it was upside down.

Most of us on GZ think Chump and, to a lesser extent Stone, are loathsome characters but it's the process that allows a President to change a sentence imposed by the judicial system that is the problem.

Obama used the procedure nearly 2,000 times in 2 terms and FDR used it over 3,600 times in 4 terms and I bet if you examined all of those there were some interventions that were extremely dubious.

Only the judicial system should be able to change a sentence that it has imposed.

You've only seen the redacted Mueller report and Barr's untruthful summary.

He was convicted of and sentenced for:

 Trump is in fascist mode.

You really do want to defend folks that are particularly crooked to the ends of the earth.

But perhaps even admitting that Trump may have not done the best COVID response is a bridge too far.... Interesting the cognitive dissonance.

The Washington Post - Judge affirms Trump’s niece can publish her book about the president and his family

today

NEW YORK - A state court judge on Monday issued an eleventh-hour ruling affirming Simon & Schuster's right to publish an explosive new book by President Trump's niece, issuing a written decision that prioritizes the First Amendment over a dated confidentiality agreement among members of the Trump family.

The book by Mary Trump - “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man” - is slated for release Tuesday. Some copies already have been distributed, and it’s already considered a best seller. ...

The Steisland Effect will be huge!   🙃

EDIT

An extract from the book: EPILOGUE - The Tenth Circle

Donald’s initial response to COVID-19 underscores his need to minimize negativity at all costs. Fear - the equivalent of weakness in our family - is as unacceptable to him now as it was when he was three years old. When Donald is in the most trouble, superlatives are no longer enough: both the situation and his reactions to it must be unique, even if absurd or nonsensical. On his watch, no hurricane has ever been as wet as Hurricane Maria. “Nobody could have predicted” a pandemic that his own Department of Health and Human Services was running simulations for just a few months before COVID-19 struck in Washington state. Why does he do this?

Fear.

Donald didn’t drag his feet in December 2019, in January, in February, in March because of his narcissism; he did it because of his fear of appearing weak or failing to project the message that everything was “great,” beautiful,” and “perfect.” The irony is that his failure to face the truth has inevitably led to massive failure anyway. In this case, the lives of potentially hundreds of thousands of people will be lost and the economy of the richest country in history may well be destroyed.

Donald will acknowledge none of his, moving the goalposts to hide the evidence and convincing himself in have required almost no effort on his part. All he would have had to do was make a couple of phone calls, give a speech or two, then delegate everything else. He might have been accused of being too cautious, but most of us would have been safe and many more of us would have survived. Instead, states are forced to buy vital supplies from private contractors; the federal government commandeers those supplies, and then FEMA distributes them back to private contractors, who then resell them.

While thousands of Americans die alone, Donald touts stock market gains. As my father lay dying alone, Donald went to the movies. If he can in any way profit from your death, he’ll facilitate it, and then he’ll ignore the fact that you died.

Why did it take so long for Donald to act? Why didn’t he take the novel coronavirus seriously? In part because, like my grandfather, he has no imagination. The pandemic didn’t immediately have to do with him, and managing the crisis in every moment doesn’t help him promote his preferred narrative that no one has ever done a better job than he has. ...

All this does lead to real possibility he will go scorched earth, given his psychology.

1/If he loses he has material to snipe about how badly the winners are doing trying fix the almost unfixable.
Kinda like his casino , it went under but he stuck his investors with biggest losses.
All the death and destruction the traitors deserved it. Payback
   Winning !

2/If he wins then he is truly chosen of god under these circumstances.
If its bad enough there is only one way 'up' it can only get better, its all winning.
Remove 2 term limit, plan worlds largest mausoleum, and statue park with him at center.
   Winning !

I prefer to think the next Congress will pass an act requiring Trump's official presidential portrait in the White House to be turned facing the wall.

I feel really sorry for that Dr Fauci (sp?) bloke. Trump has chewed him up and spit him out for doing the best he could re coronavirus.
Some of the comments I just saw on Breitbart (what a ridiculous, snarky website) were appalling. There are some really nasty people on there.

Being a doctor, or more generally a qualified technical advisor, under an El Presidente is a dangerous occupation. Nelson Teich resigned rather than follow Brazil's El Presidente's nonsensical dictums, after which Bolsonaro replaced him with a yes-man who'll do what he's told. So Fauci was caught in a bind, resign and be replaced with El Presidente's yes-man, or stay and at least try and do some good.
