Rikkitic:

Ariana Grande has announced her intention to return to Manchester for a benefit concert and to mingle and commiserate with her fans. I think this shows real character. As an official old person, I hadn't heard of her before the tragedy, but she is now a real hero in my book.

You have a much lower bar for the definition of a hero than I do, then!

Its very interesting you see Ariana as a hero.

A hero is IMO somebody that puts others lives before their own. Someone who is admired for brave deeds and noble qualities. While a benefit gig is really a nice thing to do, she is not a hero.

There were some true heros at that concert (NHS staff/ambulance staff/GP's etc, even people who were close by. Some stayed to help). Others rushed in to help when all were rushing out.

Here is one of the dictionary definitions of hero:

a person who, in the opinion of others, has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model or ideal:
My older sister is my hero. Entrepreneurs are our modern heroes.

And here is a definition of heroic:

having or displaying the character or attributes of a hero; extraordinarily bold, altruistic, determined, etc.:

Some overtestosteronised individuals may only be capable of conceptualising heroism in the context of the swinging swords and dripping blood of comic books, but like heroes themselves, it is goes way beyond primitive displays of muscle. Heroes are people with the true strength that enables them to be noble and compassionate. On the basis of what she has said and done, Ariana qualifies in spades.

Fair points. I think however you are flogging a dead horse. It's some-what unlikely she will change her mind, and at this point, I think it's distracting from the original topic.

I like to keep it ambiguous. I still think there is a difference between a hero and an action hero.

My goodness there are many more heroes joining Ariana in her heroic efforts!

Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Coldplay, Pharrell Williams and Take That.

Katy Perry will also perform, as will Usher, and former One Direction star Niall Horan.

Interesting how some people just can't bear to lose an argument. Of course the experts here know far more about lexicography than those who spend their lives compiling dictionaries. But it is more satisfying to make up your own definitions, isn't it?

All those Victoria Cross and Medal of Honour recipients in one place! Be still, my beating heart.

Victoria Cross is awarded for "... most conspicuous bravery, or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy", not heroism.

Medal of Honor (NB: spelling) is awarded for "Conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty", "not heroism.

"Be still, my beating heart" is an expression of excitement when seeing the object of one's romantic affections. It would only be appropriate in this context if you have romantic affections for gallant, brave, daring, valorous, intrepid people you've never met.

  1. If those definitions do not describe heroism, nothing does
  2. Spellcheck is not set to US English and too fiddly to mess about changing it on the phone
  3. Figure of speech, as should be obvious

If it's anything, this is altruism, not heroism. However the patent self-interest involved probably disqualifies it from being that as well.
