The New York Times - Republicans greet the news of Trump’s tax avoidance with silence.

today

Republican lawmakers reacted with nearly complete silence on Monday to a New York Times investigation that revealed President Trump paid just $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017 and that he oversees a network of businesses that are riddled with debt and losing hundreds of millions of dollars.

Spokesmen for Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Senator John Thune of South Dakota, the top two Republicans in the Senate, declined to comment on the article Monday.  ...

Not all of the president’s conservative allies were silent on how little Mr. Trump paid in federal income taxes over the past decade.

Rush Limbaugh, the conservative talk show host who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in February at Mr. Trump’s State of the Union address, said on his show on Monday that Mr. Trump’s penchant for minimizing his taxes was something to be proud of, not scorned. ...

Sad.  😕

Exactly like a tin pot banana republic dictator.

except its literally not - Trump was elected, and he didn't have anything to do with writing the laws, that make those things legal.

Still acts like one. And we are just a few months away from finding out if he is truly a tin pot banana republic dictator.

@nathan if people "see" that rich people are so afraid that they do anything to hide how they keep not paying taxes, perhaps things can change.

It doesn't matter who put the tax law in places. What matters is what people can do when they realise what those laws allow people to get away with.

Trump fighting to not show his tax return forms for years simply show rich people know they are not contributing to society and don't want this exposed.

All this noise is good to expose. As the Washington Post says "Democracy dies in darkness".

Your posts, on the other hand, are always trying to lay blame and sowing doubt - never actually giving a solution.

The 'system', with all its faults and injustices, is what people have to work with, and it can be changed. Just look at East Germany. It was much more controlling and oppressive than what currently exists in the USA. It was all-powerful, until people decided they were tired of it.

The same thing can happen anywhere. What stops it happening are messages of despair saying all options are equally bad and nothing can improve them. The election of Joe Biden is a real step in the right direction. The election of Donald Trump is a descent into hell. Anyone who can't see that difference is working to destroy whatever freedom and justice still exists.

The system can't be changed, because voters are willing to vote, for options that offer no change.

How can repeating a candidates own words and actions be considered a "message of despair"?

After comparing, I can't see any substantial differences between the 2 parties, for any, of the top 5 policies I care about, and I'm not destroying freedom or justice

You are allowed to pressure politicians to give you things, in order to get your vote -  that is the way things are meant to work, and if you don't do it that way, you end up with a country like America right now.

BBC News - Trump taxes are 'national security' issue, Nancy Pelosi says

today

The top-ranked Democrat in Washington has called President Donald Trump's alleged tax avoidance a question of "national security".

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, asked whether Mr Trump owed money to foreign interests, following an article on his financial records by the New York Times. ...

Speaking on NBC, Ms Pelosi said the report showed that "this president appears to have over $400m in debt".

"To whom? Different countries? What is the leverage they have?" she asked, adding: "So for me, this is a national security question."

"The fact that you could have a sitting president who owes hundreds of millions of dollars that he's personally guaranteed to lenders, and we don't know who these lenders are ..."

"What does Putin have on the president politically? Personally? Financially?" ...

if you don't follow the tax laws you are stupid, otherwise you are making stuff up, and you're sending extra cash to Uncle Sam

Of course its legal, to keep as much of your own cash as possible

Anyone who pays more than is legally owed, is an idiot, but the US Treasury will happily accept extra cheques from suckers

bla bla bla ...

Faecal plume. A noxious gas emission that can transport the virus through a residential building, causing new infections in spite of physical isolation. A fart, in other words.

This is how I see your posts and it is why I wrote my ditty as a response to them. Your messages serve no purpose. They are just an evil-smelling gas that makes people want to hold their noses.

Fred99:

Trump first cried "fake news" - now he's claimed that the information was "stolen" - but he can't have it both ways.

Standard US government tactic, "that completely made up fictitious story is so threatening to National Security that we can't allow it to be published". So which is it?

So was Adolf Hitler.

Luckily Trump is no Hitler and has no idea how to run a dictatorship. First thing is demand emergency powers to deal with Covid19. Then demand further emergency powers to deal with the rioting. At that point the country has passed the point of no return.

So at least in this case it's good that he's so incompetent.

Even if it's not true, it doesn't really matter. Trump is Putin's patsy, they don't need any leverage against him when he already rolls over whenever Russia wants him to.

Forbes - Trump Tax Avoidance Scandal Exposes Poor Risk Management And Double Standards At Deutsche And Professional Banks

today

The New York Times expose of President Donald Trump’s years of tax avoidance is a painful reminder of the stark double standards applied in this country to the very powerful and everyone else. ...

His power and wealth have enabled Trump to avoid paying taxes, while thousands get audited and fined for the smallest of infractions.  ...

Trump’s tax avoidance scandal also showcases how banks apply credit standards differently to wealthy and powerful borrowers. ...

Trump may finally be the greatest at something - being one of America’s most leveraged individuals.

His multiple limited liability corporate entities and he have outstanding debt possibly of over $1 billion

Trump entered the presidency with outstanding debt with Amboy Bank, Bank of New York Mellon, Chevy Chase Trust Holdings, Deutsche Bank, Investors Savings Bank, Ladder Capital, Merrill Lynch, and Royal Bank of Pennsylvania.
