In an extraordinary moment, moderator Chris Wallace pleaded with Trump not to interrupt so much. The debate has been chaotic, and often filled with interjections digressions and attacks - mostly from the incumbent.

 

“I think that the country would be better served if we allowed both people to speak with fewer interruptions. I’m appealing to you, sir, to do that,” Wallace told Trump.

 

“Well, and him too,” Trump shot back.

 

“Well, frankly, you’ve been doing more interrupting,” Wallace replied.

 

“But he does plenty,” Trump said.

 

“No, less than you have,” Wallace concluded before moving on to the next line of questioning. ...

 

 

 

 

Donald continues to act like a 10-year-old schoolyard bully.

 

Chris Wallace is doing a remarkably good job under difficult circumstances.

I have been watching the CNN commentary. The panellists seem to be in a state of shock. One called the debate a 'sh¡t show'. Another termed it an international embarrassment for the USA. Anderson Cooper said Trump's performance was 'obesely immoral'.

 

Biden seems to have acquitted himself reasonably well, in the sense that he didn't burst into tears, shoot Trump, or lapse into a coma. He wasn't scintillating, but unlike Trump, he didn't humiliate himself. Supporters will be breathing a sigh of relief that he got through it with a measure of dignity.

 

They are now waiting for a viewer survey. Trump may have hurt himself badly with his appalling behaviour. Biden just needed to stay out of trouble and he seems to have done that. The journalists are already speculating that there might not be any more debates, though two more are scheduled. The question is if voters have any stomach for them.

The New York Times - President Trump’s first debate showing amounted to an onstage shouting of his Twitter feed at Joe Biden.

 


President Trump got through the entirety of the first general election debate without telling the American people what he would do in a second term.

 

Instead Mr. Trump delivered a performance that amounted to shouting his Twitter feed at former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. while Mr. Biden was speaking. 

 

He yelled about entanglements involving Mr. Biden’s son Hunter, accused him of being in league with antifa and socialists, and said the federal government’s top scientists were wrong to be cautious about a coronavirus vaccine.

 

It all served to keep the presidential campaign about Mr. Trump’s conduct in office, a proposition that to date has left Mr. Biden with a sizable lead in both national polls and surveys of key battleground states.

 

At no point during the debate did Mr. Trump pivot away from his personal grievances with the news media, with the moderator, Chris Wallace, or with Mr. Biden. ...

 

 


The Trump cultists will love it - others will find Trump's performance repulsive.

BBC News - Poll: Biden (barely) wins. America loses.

 


A snap viewer poll by CBS News, BBC News' US partner, named Joe Biden winner of the first, messy 90-minute tussle of a debate between the candidates.

 

Of those polled, 48% say Biden won, while 41% say the title should go to Trump and 10% saw the night as a tie.

 

Commentators say that after a nasty night, the real loser was the country - and the poll seems to say the same.

What a cluster of a debate. Moderator was terrible, Trump was deranged and Biden respected the rules of engagement so let Trump run his mouth.

The roomful of CNN viewers did not choose a clear winner. A couple thought maybe Trump a little, a couple Biden, most just felt the debate was a chaotic mess. CNN just released their larger survey, and are saying Biden won by a significant margin, but the nature of the evening was such that no-one is really thinking in terms of win or lose. Everyone lost, Trump just lost by more.

Is there an award for actually sitting through a complete Trump "debate"?

Hopefully that was the debate to end all "televised election debates as entertainment".

 

The last leaders debate here was almost as bad, they're a pointless futile exercise unfit for purpose - which should be to inform voters of policy and rationally argue points.  Instead it's mindless point-scoring exercise and a feast for the media.

 

One headline that should have come out of it was Trump's order to neo-fascist civilian militia to "stand back and stand by".

Donald Trump came to heckle. 

 

He came to interrupt and to pontificate and to flail his arms, batting away questions and facts in a chaotic fury. 

 

He was a boor and a troll, holding up his stubby mitts in an angry pantomime as he tried to halt the words coming from former vice president Joe Biden’s mouth. 

 

Trump seemed to believe that with a single rude hand gesture, one that he regularly uses to assert his dominance, he could hold back the truth so he could be free to spin and hype and vent.

 

It was an exhausting mess that spun beyond moderator Chris Wallace’s control and outside the bounds of anything that could reasonably be called a debate. ...

 


It was awful. It was miserable.

 

And one wished desperately that there were commercials during the grotesque spectacle if only to give someone a chance to throw cold water on the president. ...

SaltyNZ: There is no reason to think that Biden won't be succeeded by Trump II - smart and capable.

 

 

And I'd rather have Trump the right-wing clown show than Trump II the right-wing able politician. Given that Biden is just a placeholder no-vote for Trump, it's fairly likely the next president after him will be Trump II, while having Trump do a second term will help the rest of the world build a cordon sanitaire around the US while it still can.

Which in itself is a sad indictment of the state of US politics: "The other guy did well in the sense that he didn't wet himself, start dribbling out of the corner of his mouth, or mutter about the lizard people". Sheesh.

So does anyone think Trump has improved since his first 2016 debate with Hillary, gotten worse or about the same?
He came across as a man scorned to me, fighting (or arguing) for his life.

 

And a portion of America thinks this is fine and the sign of a leader? Please.
