Paul1977:

That's very much how I feel about my party vote this year in our election, and as a result may only vote on the referendums. I genuinely feel that whoever is in government in NZ will make no difference to me whatsoever.

What about who will make the most difference to the wider community? Who is proposing policy that will do a better job of lifting us all up? Especially the groups that have been marginalized or neglected by any of the parties vying for your vote. This applies equally to the US election as it does here.

Again, I don't see that it makes much difference. Labour and National aren't really all that different. Maybe I'm cynical, but there is a big difference between proposing policies that help and actually following through.

Veering wildly OT here. But over here you can always give your party and/or candidate vote to a minor party that will, according to your world view, pull any coalition government closer to where you wish they were.

Bringing it back around to the topic at hand though. Of course that's not an option in the US. But it is common knowledge that Trump's supporters are very fervent in their support for him. So you bet they'll be voting in force. So choosing not to vote at all, or voting for someone other than Biden, is only going to help Trump's chances of getting re-elected.

And say what you will about Biden being "more of the same". You can guarantee he won't be as intentionally divisive as Trump is. Nor will he be actively trying to dismantle all the institutions designed to keep their democracy in check and to reign in a rogue president.

I agree with that part.

If we are going to have a US government that actually works for the people and fights back against all of this injustice and inequality then you cannot have two parties that both represent Wall Street. One party has to represent the people.

If we keep on voting for the same 2 parties with the same substantive policies, nothing will ever change for the better

Kanye (!) and you'll need to "write him in" on your ballot papers (only 10 states + DC allow this), since he missed the ballot deadlines by months and months

bring back the McGillicuddy Serious Party

Great Leap Backwards 1993 election advertisement

The McGillicuddy Serious Party (McGSP) was a satirical political party in New Zealand in the late 20th century. Between 1984 and 1999, it provided "colour" to ensure that citizens not take the political process too seriously. The party's logo, the head of a medieval court jester, indicated its status as a joke party.

Kayne West reminded me of the saying "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."

While Kayne West is just pathetic, obviously mentally ill, some might find 18th century English writer and critic Samuel Johnson interesting
  • very conservative, even for the 1775

  • wanted "English superiority and American obedience"

  • but protested against taxation without representation in America.

  • English and the French were just "two robbers" who were stealing land from the indigenous people of North America

  • opponent of slavery

  • made his black manservant his heir

Speaking of historical figures, how about today's typhoid Mary?

MSN News: Donald Trump tells thousands at Florida rally 'I'll kiss everyone', again claims he's immune from coronavirus

...Over the weekend, US media criticised the President for holding the event after his diagnosis and for refusing to confirm he has returned a negative result in a COVID-19 test.

Then on Tuesday, the President's physician Sean Conley released a statement saying: "In response to your inquiry … I can share with you that he has tested negative on consecutive days."

At this rally, you may struggle to find a lot of people who care either way.

"I think it's important and a positive, not a negative. He's now one of us," Mr Kunst said.

"He's gone through it and he's beaten it."

Mr Trump told the audience he is now immune to the disease — a claim that cannot be supported by science given how little is known about this novel virus.

"I went through it. Now they say I'm immune," he told the cheering crowd.

"I feel so powerful I'll walk into that audience. I'll walk in there, I'll kiss everyone in that audience. I'll kiss the guys and the beautiful woman and … I'll just give you a big fat kiss.

"It's risky, but you've gotta get out."

When asked if he was worried about catching COVID-19, Tracy Williford said: "No Ma'am, not at all."

"You hear all this stuff that's negative, but he's done a great job and he's recovered quickly," he said....

Kanye's not the only one. According to a BBC article there are well over 1,000 candidates for President. Some are on the ballot paper, others like West you have to write in the name.

Washington Post: New Zealand Gives U.S. a Lesson in Pandemic Democracy

What if the coronavirus pandemic delayed an election and no one cared?

That’s pretty much what’s happening in New Zealand, where Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern appears to be cruising toward victory in an election this Saturday after rival politicians sought postponement from the original Sept. 19 date. At a time when America is tearing itself apart over the crises of Covid-19 and a president who’s refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power after earlier calling to set back the vote itself, the spectacle of a nation tackling the same problems with calm consensus seems extraordinary.

New Zealand certainly isn’t immune to Trump-style populism. Winston Peters, Ardern’s deputy prime minister, has been railing against migration from Asia under the banner of the New Zealand First party for decades, all while occupying a string of high offices as one of the most significant politicians of his generation.

Part of it is probably down to the politics of the situation. Thanks to a robust response to the pandemic, life for New Zealand’s 4.9 million people is returning to a semblance of normality. As a result, having run close to the opposition for most of her term in office, Ardern now has a commanding poll lead which may put her on track to govern without a coalition partner. That’s an unheard-of result since the country switched to a form of proportional representation in the 1990s. Her display of magnanimity to the opposition in agreeing to the delay doesn’t appear to have seriously damaged her position. Indeed, the minor flare-up of Covid-19 cases that prompted it has now been more or less stamped out, a decent achievement for her to take to the ballot box.

The level-headedness with which elections are handled can’t be explained away by the idea that New Zealand is a “young democracy.” It’s been holding elections since the 1850s, the indigenous Maori have had the vote since 1867, and women won full rights in 1893, decades before most other countries. In that sense, the real developing democracy is the U.S....

That's odd, I saw a voting paper with his name already printed on it...but he did get his name on the thing in some places, right?

bring back the McGillicuddy Serious Party

Start a party that actually stands for something, or find one that does and join it. All you are doing is making people watch while you pleasure yourself. Either become an activist willing to stand up for your beliefs, or shut up about it.
