I have a potential to be a prime minister or a lotto winner. But I'm neither.

So people who could do heroic acts but haven't done them, not a hero.

My definition of heroism is one of character. What you guys are talking about is circumstance. Many people with heroic character are never put to the test because they never find themselves in such a situation, but if they did, they would respond heroically because that is in their character. Just because someone who would behave in an heroic fashion if the need arose, but never has the opportunity to do so, does not make them any less heroic. I think Ariana's gesture is indicative of heroic character and, if she was put to the test, she would respond heroically. You don't have to bash down doors with an automatic weapon or perform emergency surgery in the street to be heroic.

Language is about communication. If words don't have a common meaning then we are all living in the Tower of Babel. I cited the dictionary source for my definition. Others are just made up.

I don't know who you're replying to, my post was in response to your post about someone can be a hero without have performed heroic acts, which I thought you can't if you haven't yet.

Not arguing with your dictionary definition, which according to the definition, everyone/anything is a hero if you call them a hero.

I was replying to everyone but I feel this part of the discussion has lost its point. Instead of dancing on the head of a pin over this, we need to refocus on the unspeakable tragedy that occurred, and the undisputed acts of heroism that came out of that. I stated what I think about Ariana's actions, and I defended it, but if people want to try to score points off of this, then I am happy to concede the issue. I hope the benefit concert provides some relief, both emotionally and financially, to the families who have suffered so much. I hope the musicians who have joined in, however darkly selfish their true purpose, manage to spread a little joy and comfort in a very troubled time. At least they are doing something, which is a lot more than the crows questioning their motives.

I wonder if anyone is going to do a benefit concert for the 15 people blown up by ISIS at a Baghdad ice cream parlour this week?

They would have been families and kids as well.

I may be mistaken but I can't find a single NZ news outlet that has bothered to mention it.

It did not happen in NZ therefore it did not happen?

It is all over RNZ, which is the only news outlet we have in NZ as far as I know.

Or a benefit concert in Baghdad - a couple of days mention, and that is that, 80 dead 400 injured.

Manchester was in front page news for days.

Either way, it's the murder of innocents, and words are not enough to express my dismay and loss that their families must be going through.

This was pointed out on PBS Newshour, which I was just watching. If they are European or American, it stays in the news while the media wring all they can from it. If it happens in the Middle East, the media shrug and move on to the next item. Unless it happens in Israel, or the media in question are Al-Jazeera.

People are being murdered by other people. Over and over and over again. That is the story.

Well, to be fair, would you expect the Middle Eastern press to cover deaths in the US/UK/Australia/NZ for days on end?

My feeling is that most of those countries in the Middle East, Asia, Russia etc, value individuals lives much less than we do in the West.

That is a pretty sweeping observation. Whether it is true or not I cannot say but I will never get the daily images of weeping fathers in Syria holding their dead children out of my mind.
